This Connecticut thing gets worse and worse. I'm going to hang it up for the day and go get my kids out of school early and do something with them. Other than watch any more news. Try and have a peaceful day, all.
You know I can understand how people don't want gun control. I get it (I think they are wrong but still).
What I don't get is how anyone could be against a National mental health program (yes funded by our tax $) that both identifies and gives actual real help to people with serious mental health issues. On top of that I don't understand how anyone can be against the government doing whatever needs to be done to fix our crumbling education system.
I very strongly believe we would be having a lot less of these stupid senseless shootings if these two things were taken care of.
Just look at the shooting that occurred in Tucson almost 2 years ago that involved Giffords. It was done by a very disturbed individual who was known to have serious mental illness by just about everyone who knew him. Yet nothing was done.
I don't mean to politicize the event because today needs to be about the community affected but this is something that we as a country are going to have to figure out eventually or this shit isn't ever going to stop.

You do realize, Bacon, that there are a huge number of people who believe that this event means we need MORE guns? As in, teachers should feel free to carry loaded weapons with them to school? I've seen dozens and dozens of comments on various articles saying the same.
And the whole thing is horrific. It's actually even worse than what the media is reporting. I assume that when the police hold their conference in a little bit some of the details will come out, but let's just say it's beyond disgusting.
Ya I do. There were quiet a few people in town talking about how if the little old granny at Congress on Your Corner had a glock in her purse Laughner would have been stopped quicker.
Not to mention that I live in the state where the governor tried to make it impossible for State Universities and Colleges to not allow guns on their campuses despite the fact that the 3 University Presidents and Police Chiefs and 8/9 college chancellors and all 9 college police chiefs were strongly opposed to it.

Really sickened by the news this morning. I will never understand how people could bring themselves to commit such a horrible act, especially against innocent children. It's also so disheartening to see that these kind of incidents seem to be increasing over the last few years.
I have strong political feelings on this general issue but I'm not going to share them right now as I don't think it is an appropriate time for that kind of discussion. Now is the time for people to come together and send as much positivity as possible to the victims and their families, not become polarized on political issues.
Situations like this make me feel a little useless as there really isn't much I can do in a time like this. My advice is to not take life for granted, hug your loved ones, hug your children, tell those closest to you how much you love them. It's also easy to say that we live in a scary and dangerous world, which we do, but it is also important to realize there a lot of positive things about life as well. Even with an incident as awful as this, positive things can result from it. Of course, it will be impossible to fully heal all the emotional pain associated with this, but at the very least people can come together, put aside their differences, voice their support, and make others realize that while there are despicable people out there, the majority of the world is filled with genuinely good people.

Office mate #1: "Did you hear there was a school shooting? Something like 24 school kids dead." Office mate #2: "Really? Where at?" Office mate #1: "Somewhere up north. I can't remember." Office mate #3: "Connecticut." Office mate #1: "Oh, if it was New York, it'd just be a regular day there."
"There are two shooters. No, THREE! Wait, there's only one. He's from CT. No, JERSEY! Hey, little 8 year old who just saw a horrific tragedy the likes of which 99% of Americans won't see outside of a movie theater, TELL US WHAT YOU SAW!"

Just despicable, shameless behavior.
From what I understand, the only kids they interviewed were ones who weren't actually near the carnage.
If you must know, the reason that is, is because none of the children who were near what happened made it out. The motherf*cker massacred an entire kindergarten.
I'm not trying to get into the details, but I do know what happened there (or at least what the cops think happened).
I just think people should be shown some respect and privacy when their 5 year old gets shot by a psychopath. Those children being interviewed likely don't comprehend the magnitude of what just happened around them.
This is just all too sad and I want to go home and sleep and pretend I don't live in a world this sh*tty.

I don't even know what to say.
Print this out and put it on their desk. And then punch them in the face for being so ignorant and indifferent towards the tragedy.
If you guys want we can make a separate thread for shooting/gun discussions. This whole thing is terrible.
Only if it's titled F*ck guns. I actually had been thinking about starting one for a while but my opinion has calcified to the point where I can't even stomach pro-gun arguments, so I didn't see the point.
Good job Fox, CBS, NBC, CNN and the rest. You just showed a facebook profile page and twitter account for the wrong f*cking person. Some guy is getting death threats (despite the fact that the shooter is dead and the guy is literally tweeting/posting on facebook right now).
We are not immune to tragedy and this, unfortunately, is life.
This is the worst one I've ever seen though. Can't imagine what these parents are feeling this morning. My thoughts are also with you guys from that area. I know this really hits close to home.

Is there no shame in the media? Christ almighty.
I honestly hate whenever the give the gunman so much attention. But they all are fighting for ratings and have to be the first to report.
This is beyond words. I just feel sadness for the people of Newtown. I don't have any children, but it's a major tragedy for my state and humanity in general.
I've been to Newtown many times, went to college in nearby Danbury. It's a large town in area covered, but there aren't that many people there. It's a bedroom community, a quiet and safe area with tons of commuters to NYC and Fairfield/Westchester Counties. That upper Fairfield County area feels very familiar to me, a bit of a second home. It's just heartbreaking to know something like this actually happened there. Things like this don't happen around there.
My best friend is an elementary teacher in Danbury and other areas in Fairfield County. Thankfully he is safe, he is in Danbury today. But he has to drive through Newtown most likely to get home ... and I can't fathom how it feels to be there on a day like this.
Chelsea Crowell, granddaughter of Johnny Cash and direct progeny of Rodney Crowell and Rosanne Cash (and a terrific drinking pal if you ever have the chance), just posted this on fbook:
"i've had a gun at my head 3 times in my life. once for more than 20 minutes. f*ck your f*cking guns. senseless. kills or ruins lives."
It is human nature to try and make sense of a seemingly senseless act. People need to know about this guy, the act itself is terrifying and disgusting. If we cannot make a connection with the monster that perpetrated the crime it becomes even scarier. This may not be rational, but it is just the way I believe it works. At least for most. I don't think any of the attention is "positive"...again, people need to make some sense of this. I think that that involves some connection between what is senseless and more concrete things, like a face and a history of the monster that did this.

I'm trying to find this video....I forget the details but it was a guy talking about how the media SHOULD cover shootings and things like this and one of the important things was not showing/naming the killer. Like...focus on the facts and don't give him all this attention because then the next sick f*ck who may do this sort of thing and wants to be "famous" for it may have more motivation to carry it out.
I think the main idea of it is don't keep showing photos of the guy, don't keep mentioning his name. Focus on the facts. Focus on the tragedy. We've already seen how identifying people in things like this has led to innocent people with the same name being threatened and feeling unsafe. In a few cases (like when Spike Lee retweeted the wrong George Zimmerman's address after the Trayvon Martin stuff).
