I haven't smoked a cigarette since May, and it feels great. This thread was absolutely huge. I really don't think I could have done without the support here and it saved my wife a lot of agony that I vented here everyday during the tough first few weeks. She quit when she got pregnant (she said she hardly thought about it and may have a tough time after the baby), and now its even easier for me to know I'll never smoke again with a kid on the way.
I smoked a pack and half to two packs a day for twelve years and I can say it was a lot easier to quit than I was expecting. At this point, its like nothing to me. I think about it every once in a while but mostly I think its gross.
I would strongly encourage anyone quitting right now to read through this thread and give us a daily update. People here can be very encouraging and inspiring!
It really is more about how deep your commitment is than anything.
Ka Mai, i am SOOOOO glad you stayed quit!! Congratulations, i wish i could have the same sucess story as you, but its day 3, and counting. And the support of others is so helpful, i am so glad i started this thread back in April, for you, me, and hopefully others. Stay Strong
I never got addicted to smoking. Probably had 3 or 4 packs total in my life. I chewed all through out the summer and loved it but decided to quit last month before it became a regular thing that i needed. good luck to all trying to quit
Interesting piece on NPR this morning about stroke victims who have sponateously quit after their strokes with no trouble at all. It seems that many of these have suffered damage to a certain part of the brain that is associated with cravings. Still decades away from any practical application in terms of a cure, but the researcher was pointing out that this can be used a useful information by anyone wanting to quit, just so that they can see that it really is a deeply ingrained habit that's wired into the brain and so face the challenge more realistically.
