I loved it when they used a dream machine. Back when I was learning 3D animation in about 1994, I found a description of a "dream machine", a device that comprised a cylinder with holes cut in a pattern, placed on a turntable, with a lightbulb hanging in it. You were supposed to stare at it until you started dreaming. So I used Strata and Quicktime and made one. I never saw one until I saw Mars Volta concert last year, and they fired up a genuine dream machine. Watch closely now:

I was a wee bit googly eyed when I wandered into Volta last year. It was bit too intense for my state of mind so I wandered off and I think I ended up in the sonic forest. . . much more my speed at the time.

nice dream machine! I have been looking for 60's light fixtures for some time now, with no luck! The band Dead Meadow has a few really cool 60's light machines they use in there shows that made me want to own a few.
nice pics man! i was deffinitly boomed out during that show, and thought those guys were vampires! i actually thought they were sound tribe who was playing at the same time, until i got home and looked at pics of both bands on stage. Saturday i walked around all day telling everyone how sick sounds tribes show was
i have two people that i know who went last year, without each other, and they both talk about the volta show more than any other moment of '05. will someone else rant and rave about it? was it as phenomenal as they say?

although i didn't go to roo last year, i saw them open for APC a few years ago, knew nothing at all about them, was expecting to snore through the opener...
good god, they upstaged the headliner!
they have an amazing stage presence and put on a highly energized funky show
too bad they aren't returning to the roo this year I'm sure that was a mind blowing combination

Yes. I was there. And it was phenomenal! I knew nothing about them, had no material by them. Then I saw their entire set at Roo and was blown away. Very good musicians, INTENSE stage presence & sound.
Now they are one of my favorite bands and I play their albums ALL the time... I wish they could play again this year.

i saw Volta open for System of a Down last August. they were really good and the crowd was into them alot. i would love to see them play a longer set. but they did not come close to upstaging System.

I have seen them outside the roo and honestly I was not that impressed with the roo set considering all the hype. It wasn't a bad set at all but I don't think it was as good as it gets made out to be. I typically just keep my mouth shut about this because I dont like being negative nancy and its pointless to point this out. The other times I saw them as headliners they seemed more into it. I just figure I am wrong because all these people are so in love with that set. Thats my 2 cents please dont smite me! Everyone has different thoughts on whats good and whats not.
I really wish they would headline some tours instead of opening for arena bands I have zero interest in like they have been doing for 2 years now.

I was at the Mars Volta Bonnaroo 2005. I did a few hours of every band, plus the Mardi Gras parade. It was like Galactic Krewe De Carnivale for 1.5 hours, Mars Volta for 2 hours, STS9 for 1.5, STS9 was still playing when I left to crash at 3 or 4 AM. I got full shows from all three bands. Its one of the best combos of three bands in a row Ive ever seen.
But about the Mars Volta segment. From what I saw, about two RAGING hours, this WAS the best show at the fest in 2005. Herbie Handcoc k headhunter 2005, WSP on Sun with all those guests, and the Word set on Sun were the only things that came close to being as epic at the Mars Volta Late Nite was.
The music was loud, and the band was ferocious... SICK SET.
