Sigur Ros is definitely awesome music to lay down to. If you're good enough you might go into a transcendental state and completely lose touch with your body; there will be complete and divine connection, between music and your psyche.
Anyways, other good music to sleep to is: Damien Rice, Orbital, Boards of Canada, Telepopmusik, Imogen Heap, and Sufjan Stevens.

^^^There are a lot of great recordings of Gothic, Renaissance and pre-Baroque music that work well for relaxing/falling asleep. I'm partial to Josquin Desprez, Claudio Monteverdi, Guillaume de Macheaut and other "masters of the motet". ;D
for some reason i can't fall asleep if there are words in music...i guess it's like if someone is talking to me, i have to think to listen. so i love listening to classical music while i fall asleep. i have a 9 minute version of "walking through the air" ..it does the trick if i need it.
Two words: MAZZY STAR. Get the album "So Tonight That I Might See". It will put you to sleep, and also help induce the deepest sleep that you can have.
Close your eyes. Picture a convict. What's he wearing? Nothing special, baseball cap on backwards, baggy pants... he says something ordinary like... 'yo, thats shizzle.' Okay. Now slowly open your eyes again. Who are you picturing? A black man? Wrong. That was a white woman. Surprised? Well, shame on you.

karma for megadeth.
Nothing better than a little She Wolf, Rude Awakening to enduse sleep that drum solo rocks
Hey, thanks for the karma! I was mostly joking though. I was trying to be funny and list some heavy metal bands when all of us know that those really don't help people sleep. (however, maybe for some folks, it does). It was a lame attempt at humor and I apologize.

Hope Sandoval has the coolest voice - love Mazzy Star. I prefer She Hangs Brightly for sleep inducement. Also works for when you don't want to fall asleep with that special someone, if you know what I mean. Giggity Giggity, Alright!
Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters are my favorites that haven't been mentioned, but I turn to Great Lake Swimmers and Bonnie "Prince" Billy quite often when I can't fall asleep.
