I think STPs live show would convert any doubters instantly, especially the acoustic portion of their set. Seems some people want to say STP ripped off Pearl Jam, but only Pearl Jam is a Roo friendly band. They're just as much if not more so a Clear Channel radio rock band as STP. What makes Evenflow and Alive so much more Roo friendly than Plush and Interstate Love Song?
I really hate the idea of a band "fitting" or "not fitting" Bonnaroo.
Why can't it just be good music?
Bonnaroo is what it is. To expect it to be any different than it has been is unrealistic. And the fact is, there literally dozens of major festivals all over the country every summer that feature acts that play music like STP. But there are maybe a dozen major festivals around the country that feature the kind of diverse acts Bonnaroo does.
Enjoy Bonnaroo for what it is, but I don't expect it to change to cater to a harder rock taste because it's not a hard rock festival. Bonnaroo is a roots and jam festival that gives a little space for nostalgia acts and indie acts. Just go look at the past lineups, and it'll become apparent to you real quickly.
As far as name recognition, I think Bonnaroo is on a different level from those festivals that feature "STP-music." Remember, Rolling Stone mentioned Bonnaroo as one of the most significant events in rock and roll. With Coachella's line up already announced, I really think STP plays either Roo or Lolla.
Tool opened the door for more 90s rock bands, STP could very well walk right through.
^^^STP and Tool are absolutely nothing alike. Beyond that, I don't see STP headlining either Lollapalooza or Bonnaroo. Early rumors have them playing Rock on the Range in Columbus. I would also say they're an early favorite to play one of the Virgin fests, if not both.
I could see them playing Vegoose though, but even that seems like a bit of a stretch...

Of course they're very different bands, but both hard "alternative" bands that came out of LA in the early 90s and associated with the alternative music landscape.
I still think they will headline a festival with more name recognition than Rock on the Range. This is a band that after 3 records had sold 16 million copies in the US and had 10 hit singles with 8 of those being songs you still hear frequently on rock/alternative radio. They will draw strong on their own name and with it being a reunion tour, I would guess it is in their interest to only accept headlining positions.
Scott's ego will factor into this too, no way will he have a reunited STP opening for someone unless they're a legend/influence of STP.
