I would be absolutely shocked if they were on the bill at announcement. It would be like booking Offspring or Bush...
except they would be booking a good band with STP.
Perhaps...but it's a band that really doesn't fit Roo.
In fact, they're rumored to be playing this year's edition of the Rock on the Range festival. The acts that played their last year: ZZ Top, Evanescence, Velvet Revolver, Buckcherry, Chevelle, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace.
Really, looking at past Roo lineups, the only bands in the ballpark of STP soundwise are the Black Crowes or Gomez. So while it's cool that STP is getting back together, I really wouldn't expect them to play Bonnaroo. Hence, I would be shocked if they were on the lineup.
I really hate the idea of a band "fitting" or "not fitting" Bonnaroo.
Why can't it just be good music?
This is like complaining about There Will Be Blood not having enough romance or robots, or HBO not doing any good reality tv.
Bonnaroo is what it is. To expect it to be any different than it has been is unrealistic. And the fact is, there literally dozens of major festivals all over the country every summer that feature acts that play music like STP. But there are maybe a dozen major festivals around the country that feature the kind of diverse acts Bonnaroo does.
Enjoy Bonnaroo for what it is, but I don't expect it to change to cater to a harder rock taste because it's not a hard rock festival. Bonnaroo is a roots and jam festival that gives a little space for nostalgia acts and indie acts. Just go look at the past lineups, and it'll become apparent to you real quickly.

because its a sin for Bonnaroo to evolve into something more diverse? A festival for just good music rather than roots and jam.
And if you think it doesn't have space for some hard rock acts, I'm guessing you missed Tool and Clutch last year.
You talk about the diversity of Bonnaroo, but yet you just limited the festival to roots and jam that gives a little space for nostalgia acts and indie. Thats kind of contradictory. Also, inacuarate.
We all know the direction that Bonnaroo is heading. They're leading into a more-diverse, all-around music festival. I know that infuriates some, but what Bonnaroo was in the past isn't necessarily what it will be this year, or next year, or in the future. Bonnaroo can't survive with the same old jam bands and roots acts every year, and on a long enough time line, they're all going to be overdone. You have to diversify to keep music fans interested. Bonnaroo knows this.
Diversity is a good thing but if you lose your core fans then the whole fest changes. I personally don't want to lose the feel that Bonnaroo has. It's already happening and it's sad. I know that if I don't like a band I can go to another stage but what happens when there's not another band for me to see?.... that's when this core fan leaves.
I would be absolutely shocked if they were on the bill at announcement. It would be like booking Offspring or Bush...
First of all comparing STP to bush is just plain stupid. STP has talent Bush has a pretty face up front with no musical credibility to back it up. That being said, I still do not think superfly would hand over a headlining spot to band that cancels shows left and right because there lead singer is an addict. Also this topic of diversity reminds me of the south park episode when the kids get in trouble for not tolerating Mr. Slave and lemmiwinks. So the parents take the kids to the museum of tolerance. The adults all claim to be tolerant until the see a smoker outside and take his head off. You call for diversity but then don't really want it. Bonnaroo is an ever evolving entity and while it may have start out as a jam band fest, there is only so far that can go. As long as the bands they continue to book bring something to the table who cares if they are played on modern rock radio or if no one has ever heard of them. I did not want to sound mean so here is karma to make up for it.

STP ripped off PJ to become famous then evolved into the kind of radio rock band that would appeal to Americans. Bush ripped off Nirvana to become famous then became the kind of radio rock band that would appeal to Europeans. I honestly, see no difference between the two other than the demographics they appealed to after their initial success. Musically, they are on the same level of achievement to me.

I'm not sure this applies. If Phish said they wanted to headline, I'm sure Superfly would be down. And Trey is most definitely an addict.
I don't see STP headlining for completely different reasons.

Honestly, this makes me laugh. Every year, you get new people to the festival who are essentially attracted by a few bands that aren't normal Bonnaroo type of bands. And you get two things: 1) Vets tend to bitch that the festival isn't jam enough 2) New kids tend to bitch that the festival doesn't cater to their personal tastes.
The festival IS a roots and jam band festival. Look at the leaks. Willie Nelson, BB King, Robert Plant & Allison Krause, MMJ, Pat Green, Jose Gonzalez, Ghostland Observatory...these aren't acts that are totally out of line with what Roo has been about. They are roots, jam and indie acts.
So when I say I don't think STP is going to play Roo, I might as well be saying I don't think Green Day is playing Roo. I don't think Smashing Pumpkins is playing Roo. I don't think Velvet Revolver will play Roo. I don't think Metallica will play Roo. Why? Because they suck? Because I'm against diversity? No. It's because the festival hasn't really booked those kinds of bands.
I'm looking at the festival and telling you what I see. And you're coming back at me with what you want it to be.
Everyone gets so worked up about the headliners....me included. And everyone likes to base what the crowd/atmosphere will be like based on those 3 bands. But we all seem to forget there is so much more than that. There are the other 90 bands which I think superfly does a pretty good job of picking a diverse group. And I don't care how big of a music fan you are there will always be a band on the list that you haven't heard of, seen live, or is just plain old new to you. I think that is the most important part to remember when it comes down to the band they choose. This like so many thread has gotten a little off topic, but I would like to see STP there. Why not......
STP would be fine with me as long as we don't have PJ too. Nothing against either band and I have loved both of them very much in their days but 2 grunge bands would be a bit much.
i understand completely what dudezer is saying but i think i agree w/ chandler and jjspkd
look at the last couple of years....
The Police is arguably unlike any headliner 'roo has ever had, because they were stupid-popular for a mere 7 years before they broke up, and they have a style that is clearly different than any other band. Look at the past headliners and tell me they have booked someone like the Police before.
Tool is a radical band, which started off based on satanic ideas stemming from an extremely fucked up maynard keenan. Has bonnaroo ever had anyone like Tool before? Look at the past headliners and answer that question.
Tom Petty played in '06. A lot of people think he ripped off Bruce Springsteen's style of music, does it make him less of a musician and songwriter because his style is comparable to the Boss's style?
Radiohead in my opinion is probably the best band of the last 20 years, and i think based on their consistancy of continuous quality records, you'd be hard pressed to find a band that has the talent and style that they do. Look back and tell me there has been a headliner like Radiohead... i thought so
this fest started as mainly a jam band festival, with acts like Dave, the Dead, Jack Johnson, Trey, Allman Brothers etc... but its obvious that bonnaroo is moving in a new direction.
You can argue its for the worst or for the best (i think the latter) but it still is gravitating toward a larger demigraphic, so young guys like me who constantly crave new sounds and bands that push the limits musically, because thats what music does - it grows, diversifies and expands.
Stone Temple Pilots do sound somewhat like Pearl Jam. SO WHAT!!! They still have great music and appeal to a lot of people. This fest is not and will never be exemplified by the top of the list band that headlines or any other band for that matter.
Superfly wants new acts, acts that when seen on that poster coming out in the next week or so people say 'wow'. And to a lot of people STP will be a band like that.
I dont think they are a Saturday Night headliner, but i'd love to see them on stage, because it adds a new dimension to this festival, bringing in different music fans with something else to contribute to this great festival.
btw, i sincerely don't mean to be didactic, this year will be round #2 and i'm just looking forward to seeing new live acts and sharing this great experience with all of you!!!
yeah, if Pearl Jam is also there, I definitely dont see STP as a headliner. Maybe playing pre-headliner to them, or the finale of the Which stage on Sunday.

The Police are reggae mixed with punk. And Stewart Copeland plays in Oysterhead, a band that played Roo the year before and is associated with Phish and Primus by virtue of its other members.

Tool is prog rock which is also right up hippie alley. Their metalness threw regulars off though. I agree to a point, but they share a lot in common with Radiohead.

I've never heard that comparison. That's interesting. But all my hippie friends in college listened to Petty. They especially loved certain activities accompanied by his music.

You're right to an extent. But then that's not taking into account what Radiohead's influences are. Reggae, jazz, classic rock, electronica...these are all genres that have always had a presence at Bonnaroo.

I agree...to a point. I would say about 75% of the bill every year stays pretty consistent to what Bonnaroo was about at the start.

But they are also nowhere near the level of bands like Tool, Radiohead, The Police or Tom Petty, whether you want to compare them artistically or commercially. And they will be looking to bank this summer on headlining slots at summer fests. And they have no connection to AC/Superfly. And their music does not fit the Bonnaroo format.
I just don't see them playing for all of those reasons.

First, I don't think STP brings a lot of new people to the festival. Even as a reunited act, if the average STP fan knows that their band is going to be playing a rock fest near their city, they're not going to go out to the middle of nowhere in Tennessee and sit through a bunch of roots and jam acts just to see STP. And chances are the Roo goer who likes STP will be there even if STP weren't playing.

You're not didactic in the least. I honestly don't mean to be so heavy handed in my disagreement. I disagree just as much with the people who've bitched about the festival having less jam acts than it did initially.
It's just Bonnaroo's format is so unique everyone wants bands they like to play it, whether or not they necessarily fit. In many ways, STP is no more likely than Bjork or Throbbing Gristle, acts I'd love to see at Roo, but that would probably alienate a fair degree of regulars...
