OK here's the scoop....I have had my problems with chemicals in the past and now I live clean. I am starting to get a little paranoid about all the substances that are supposed to be available at the 'roo. I have even read that pushers can be, well, pushy.
So what I want to know is this: how easy/hard will it be to avoid a 'drug scene' at the 'roo? Will there be constant clouds of 'smoke'? Will people be passing mind-altering chemicals back and forth to strangers like me? Will pushers be pushy?
I have heard there are clean and sober groups at the 'roo. Has anybody interacted with them? Where do they tend to be located?
My plan is to be too busy soaking in the experience to be bothered with wrecking my head (and therefore my 'roo), but I want to be prepared to know what to expect.
Any and all comments on the subject would be most gratifyingly welcome.
I'll support you man. I've been completely straight-edge my whole life, never touched any of the stuff. I made it through 04 Roo without getting into trouble with anything. If you just ignore pushers and keep moving they won't bother you. As for friendlies, nobody gets offended if you just politely decline. As for the clean and sober groups, I know there is a clean and sober group of moe. fans called the Happy Hour Heroes that set up meetings at all of their shows. They're good people.
first off I gotta say congrats on kicking your problem.. I have a friend who is going through rehab right now and I'm so proud of her.
that being said, there is a large "substance" element there, as there is with all big festivals, but it's not as bad as you would be led to believe. in my experience, pushers weren't too persistant.. a simple "no thanks" usually suffices.
although I didn't run into entire groups of clean heads at '04, I did run into a few sober cats who were having the time of there lives just taking in the music.
just keep on jammin' all weekend, and you should be fine
The one thing you asked... will there be a constant cloud of smoke... I would kinda have to say yeah to that one. It seemed to me that people were smoking everywhere, I'd never seen it so open anywhere before. If that won't bother you then I'd say yeah it should be no problem at all.
I don't know what half the stuff people were pusing last year was! People just walk by you and say the name of what ever they have, or sometimes wander into your camp site offering something, but everyone was really quiet and mellow about it. On the walk to Centeroo we'd just be like "no, no, no, no, no...." you get it... and it was cool
Well thanks but of course I'll be spending 90% of my time in Centeroo, and I really want to know what the situation will be like there, so I can, shall we say, 'mentally prepare'.
Thank you for your responses thus far, and please keep them coming.
The 2005 info guide says ther will be various clean and sober groups there. You know what people will be up to. I will be there for the music. Good for you to get out and have some fun! Dont let what other people do force you to live in shell. Just take it one band at time.
Last year i saw wharf rats (started out as sober deadheads) with a tent near the back of the mainstage crowd, who can be identified with yellow balloons, and offer meetings and support throughout the shows.
In centroo your not really that tempted, unless the smell starts you off. I went last year clean and had a blast. On shakedown I was asked to by everything under the sun, even a small Hatian boy. No one pushes you so you don't have to worry about the pressure. Just make fun of whoever calls you molly. A good response is "No my name is _____ not Molly."

I am guessing a "Molly" is someone who doesn't do drugs? I hope you aren't referring to Molly Maguires haha. That would be an odd thing to be called.
WBennerrJr, I really can respect someone who can stay clean. It may not be for me personally, but whenever I find out either someone is clean because of past issues, or even that they just don't want to do it, I stay clear of any form of peer pressure towards them. If I had to make a generalization about the general populous at Bonnaroo I would assume they would be just as cool about it.
I can't say I'll be joining you clean and sober kids, but more power to you!
My take on it, if you say "no," that's pretty much that. I don't think the people pushing illegals are anymore pushy than the t-shirt vendors or the creepy looking dude who will be selling smooshed Hostess treats, bootleg stickers, and Pabst near your campsite. If anyone ever gives you any grief, just be vocal about it and you'll have plenty of folks willing to talk the guy down.

hehehehe Rookies
I wouldnt sweat it man, just politely decline like everyone said, i did see peeps trading and sharing the wealth at shows in centeroo but the dealers stay out of there.... I mean if you cant even see, smell or be around the stuff at all, then you will have a hard time at the roo. But as for anyone pressuring you, i dont think that'll be a problem, you will be in the minority but its not important....
Interesting comment "I mean if you cant even see, smell or be around the stuff at all"...if I believed that answer to be "yes", I'd say I have no business going.
So, I must believe that answer is "No". BUT - my doc was always ganja. Had some hard times with alcohol but Mary was always my true lover. So, I have a smell-triggered issue. What I am trying to do is prepare myself so I know what to expect. Will it be the occasional waft or will it be, kick back and enjoy the contact?
I am cool with whatever that answer is, or any suggestions from anybody about 'if it starts to get to you, here's what you can do". Main thing is, and why I appreciate all this feedback (and hopefully a lot more), is to have some idea of what I am walking into.
The vast majority of the folks at the festival will be indulging in something -- one way or the other. If you can't handle being around a large group of people choosing their form of release, than no, I'd say Bonnaroo isn't for you. If you can say no, learn to walk past, grin and bear it, and go about your own way in general -- it won't be an issue! Regardless of what the rumors may be, it's not some orgyastic cesspool of alcohol fueled drug use. It's a beautiful time, with beautiful music, attended by a large group, that's largely, beautiful people. No one's going to force you to do something you don't want to do. I hope you'll join us at the meetup (whatever that may be) and hang out with all us inforooers.
There is no way to avoid all of it but at the same time it's not like being pressured. Nice folks will offer to smoke you up at shoes and stuff and all you have to do is say no. They aren't gonna try and convince you to smoke or anything. You will see people selling it and people buying it all over the place though. Since you plan on staying in centeroo most of the time then it's not a big deal. There are not many pushers in there at all. If you can handle smelling it and seeing people smoke all weekend then you shouldn't have a problem.

There just isnt supposed to be any real specific drug talk at all and for good reason... This one started going in that direction with the Molly thing... Its obviously not your fault though...

If the pushers get "pushy," you should get "kicky" and land one in his nuts.

gosh, I can't believe that rumour about drugs being everywhere at bonnaroo is still going around, thats older than the "mtv bought bonnaroo" one. later yall
