Led Zeppelin are to headline next year's Glastonbury Festival.
The legendary rock group - who played a sensational comeback concert at London's O2 arena earlier this month - will take to the stage for the world-famous musical extravaganza, in Somerset, England, before embarking on an 18-month world tour.
A source close to the band - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham, who has replaced his late father John Bonham - said: "It will kick off at next year's Glastonbury after Robert has finished touring with American country star Alison Krauss."
Led Zeppelin first inspired Michael Eavis to organise the Glastonbury Festival after he saw the band perform an open air concert in 1970.
It has also been reported the rockers plan to return to New York's Madison Square Garden - where they played three historic sell-out concerts in 1973 - as part of the globetrotting tour.
Although the group has previously hinted at playing further shows together, there has still been no official announcement.
Earlier this month, frontman Plant said: "It wouldn't be such a bad idea for Led Zeppelin to play together from time to time."
Guitarist Page has previously stated: "It's a bit selfish to do just one show. If that's it, we probably shouldn't have taken the genie out of the bottle."

They're still not offically NOT playing Roo. All I'm saying is, so far it seems Zep has no conflicts with the Roo dates and Robert Plant is rumored to be there with Alison Krauss anyway, so it only makes sense that Zep would show up...

Zeppelin in '09 perhaps?
This sounds a bit more likely than '08
I'm with you two. I think they'll swing through in '09. Anyway I hope so, since I can't make it this year.

Okay a couple thoughts
1) "A source close to the band - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham, who has replaced his late father John Bonham - said: "It will kick off at next year's Glastonbury after Robert has finished touring with American country star Alison Krauss.""
Thats not very reassuring, its sounds like (if the source is correct) that perhaps the best we gonna get in '08 is Krauss and Plant...but maybe they're laying the foundation for '09.
2) If LZ plays 'Roo as a kick-Off to some giant tour, but then goes back overseas right away to begin it, won't that adversely affect ticket availability and prices?
3) On that some note, If Zeppelin rips off this amazing tour and shows up at 'roo in '09 after having played everywhere, will that somehow take away some of the mystique of them playing roo...i mean a lot of us are gonna end up seeing them if they tour up and down the country, maybe even play other '09 fests.
If Zeppelin rips off this amazing tour and shows up at 'roo in '09 after having played everywhere, will that somehow take away some of the mystique of them playing roo..
I agree. It's either 08 or it doesn't happen at Roo. I really believe the John Paul Jones connection has made Roo a must for Zeppelin once they decided to get back together.
As the poster above stated, the mystique of Zeppelin at Roo after a year of touring isn't as strong. I have been hearing the Zeppelin rumor pretty much from the moment I returned home from Roo last year.
If Zeppelin rips off this amazing tour and shows up at 'roo in '09 after having played everywhere, will that somehow take away some of the mystique of them playing roo..
I sorry, but I disagree. The fact that a band (any band) plays some other venue(s) does not take away from Bonnaroo. If anything, it keeps out the non-festie types that are only attending for the one show. LZ in ANY year would be epic.

I'm very disappointed by this news, although I guess I'm not surprised. But I feel very, very strongly that Zeppelin will NOT headline this year, and WILL next year. Glastonbury is on their home turf, so it makes sense they would kick off their tour there... not in Tennessee. Also, the news item says that is the beginning of their tour, so that's evidence against the thought of any dates before Glastonbury. But even that is in addition to the known fact that Plant will be touring with Krauss at that time. So yeah, Zeppelin in '08.
And I'm with HappyBunny: plenty of bands have come to Bonnaroo during large tours and gone out of their way to make it a special show-- longer (Radiohead for 2 1/2 hours?), more energetic (Trey with an orchestra AND with his band?), and let's not forget the guests (Morello joining Tool?)! Zeppelin doesn't seem like an exception to that trend. So now's not the time to fret. Now's the time to prepare.

agree to disagree...i will never ever be disappointed by LZ anywhere, period. But I'm just pointing out that many people will get to see them prior to 'Roo. Maybe their 'Roo show will be nuts and totally different than their tour show, but even if its the Police again (just going through the motions,) the majority of the people will have an amazing time and it will definitely reduce the ticket demand. If it's LZ '09, so be it.

this sucks, but i completely understand, i sometimes forget that music is also a business, i was just hoping that we at bonnaroo would get to see them before the rest of the world, i can live with seeing plant and krauss this year whether they're a headliner or not, also, it said it's an 18 month tour, which i guess does this thing start in july? so that would mean it would end in January of 2010? i hope zeppelin comes around cincinnati, louisville, columbus, or indy cause i'm there, but i still think led zeppelin having their own show on the bonnaroo farm would be the best, most realistic idea...

Can somebody PLEASE buy me a ticket to the UK? Geez.
At this point, I don't really care about seeing Led Zeppelin at Roo (mostly because I think that it's not going to happen) but I want to see them live....they need to come to the states!!!!

I would interpret this news as making it very unlikely that Zeppelin will swing by the farm this summer. Maybe a superjam involving Plant and Page and some other folks, but I don't think an all out Led Zeppelin headlining show will happen.

Zeppelin is going to beef bonnaroo. Just like sound tribe beefed Echo Project... At this point, if they are on the initial lineup. Cool, as long as I get a ticket. If they arent, Sweet bcause I know I will get a ticket to Bonnaroo. I just want to see a lineup. They could at least give up one headliner and a latenight. Even th ough, imo, they gave a part of one of the headliners allready.
