"They cant officially confirm until the london gig so, pass it on. Also Metallica is confirmed for the gig too"
yes i agree metallica doesent fit. I'd way rather see gwar, who arguably doesent fit either. I actually like some of metallicas stuff, old and new but i really dont want them at Bonnaroo mainly because they'd take up a headliner spot that could be filled by someone alot more fitting
^^ i agree. im a big "old" metallica fan. anything after justice doesn't do them any justice. i would puke if they played roo. save that slot for someone more fitting. metallica, it's time to retire fellas.
Egads...Metallica???? Oh well....taping is allowed at 'Roo! ;D Let's just all bring our recorders and flood the internet! That would be about the only upside I could see...that and getting a good nap before late night started ;D
Maybe they were a package deal, i mean you've got to figure this would be part of a larger zeppelin tour, and they are bound to have some big name acts opening for them, so maybe metallica just happens to be the band who's opening for zeppelin in june...
I don't like metallica much, but I'm not too concerned, there is always something else to do at bonnaroo... and i doubt they'd be put in a headlining spot, more like a end of the day what stage ala Cypress Hill in 06...

This is the most reasonable scenario I've read. I really can't imagine Superfly reaching out to a band so far past their expiration date and such a huge step beyond everything they've booked in the past. Don't get me wrong, Metallica were one of the first bands I fell in love with, but that was about fifteen years ago and they've seemingly been on a downward spiral ever since.
I'd check them out, but I can't imagine the powers that be reaching out to the Metallica camp for an appearance. A piggyback for Zeppelin though wouldn't completely surprise me. Still, like Sparklybecca and plenty of others, I really don't believe it at this point.
well, you ask me why i'm drunk all the time it levels my head and eases my mind i just walk along and stroll and sing i see better days and i do better things
If Metallica plays 'Roo this year, I'll really have to question the direction the fest is heading. I can't think of a band that is more out of step with the Bonnaroo ethos than Metallica.
If it's Metallica as a headliner, I may not go. Nothing against fans of the band, I have very close friends who are diehards....but as much as I enjoy the festie atmosphere...I go for the music.
My basic reaction to the news when I heard about Metallica was WTF?! I have tried to digest the idea of this possibly being true and thought about why would they be booked and how they would fit in with the festival.
Lets go back to Bonnaroo 04 shall we. As some of us remember, Umphrey's/moe. covered not one, but two Metallica songs during the set. If I recall, the crowd was ecstatic to hear some Metallica being played. Then this past year Rod/Gab covered some Metallica tunes that was very well received. So, is there a market for Metallica to play roo...well, maybe. Its kinda funny how many of us are opposed to having Metallica play the festival(I am on the fence with this one), but we don't mind if someone else covers their music.
I also think that if Metallica(this is still a very big if) could be a calculated risk. If I were Superfly and I wanted to book someone like Metallica , I would make sure I have someone alot bigger to draw in people to the point they it wouldn't make a difference if Metallica was on the bill or not. That is where Led Zeppelin would come into play. The other thing I want to add is that the newsletter said Metallica was "confirmed to play on the bill" but not once did it say they were headlining.Anyways, thats my 2 cents.

Ive been to Metallica shows, and they are nothing even along the lines of Bonnaroo. I have been to Tool shows before bonnaroo and could vouch for it working. Alcohollica will change bonnaroo.

I would love to see Metallica live but probably not at Roo. It just isn't a good fit. It kind of bums me out if this is true - well not the Zepplin part
If they are a package deal, then maybe Metallica would play before Zepplin which I would be ok with......

Yeah, I also have a really hard time seeing them headline at Bonnaroo. And I can't imagine a band of that size not being a headliner. Still, I feel like this is probably one of those crazy rumors, like the Dylan and Pearl Jam one from last year.
I really have serious doubts about Metallica anyway - Lars is way too egotistical and would want ALL themoney for himself and all the attention, fame and glory

Christ in heaven I hope not. Though, as everyone is pointing out, it doesn't make any sense. Every band in the past has had at least SOME defenders I've seen on this board. So far, Metallica has none. I don't think Superfly is that out of step with what the community wants that they would pick someone that objectionable. I call bs.
Rolling Stone too. I don't know which is scarier, that RS has picked up this rumor or that they seem to think a Metallica headliner "makes sense" for Roo 08!
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

"A Bonnaroo spokesperson had no comment on the email."
Very interesting. This is starting to look...true.
Metallica, huh? You know, I won't lie. It's not my thing, but I trust Superfly. If Superfly is signing them, it's like those guys saying, "hey, check these guys out, they're totally worth it. " Given my experience with Superjam, if Superjam were a buddy of mine trying to get me to really sit down and listen to a certain musician, I'd trust that buddy's track record and I'd really sit down and listen to that musician. So if Superfly signs Metallica, I'm in.
And Zeppelin...well I'm not even getting into that. As long as Zeppelin is there, Superfly could sign the Spice Girls for the other two nights and I'd be in.
