Ok. . . So this is obviously my first pilgrimage to Bonnaroo. I have heard countless positive things about the festival, but I was wondering how exactly do the police (six-up haha) deal with Shakedown St. I know that from what I've heard and read that the local law enforcement is pretty lax, to an extent, with all of the festival goers and their. . .festivities. But if there is actually an area on the grounds where things are so "out in the open", then why wouldn't the "jakes" just crack down there? I guess I just want to know what involvement the officers on duty have with the infamous Shakedown St.

not to divert people from visiting this thread but im gonna post cuz youll prolly read this thread. anyway, the cops i think at bonnaroo serve thier true purpose, to protect those who need it and to be of general service to the mass ( your to drunk to find your campsite, honestly ask a mounted cop theyre generally not douces). plus the cops dont have enough hand cuffs to arrest all the people using whats "out in the open", they more so like to target people who distribute whats so "out in the open". basically dont be the "WHERE CAN I FIND SOME SUBSTANCES" person and youll be fine. and dont be super parnoid either, cuz its not worth your time
I've heard it said (not sure if this is true) that the folks on horseback aren't cops but just local people w/ horses that they hire to keep an eye on things and give provide the image of security. I don't think they had police uniforms - anyone remember how they were dressed or have a picture?
But yeah, as it's been said before just don't make a scene or cause trouble and you'll be fine. Pretty much everything is out in the open everyone, but discretion is still a good idea.

i dont wanna go find it again. but i read an article somewhere about roos security. the mounted patrols are from a company that does lots of festivals, sporting events, and marches and whatnot. alot of the people that are on the horses are off duty cops/emts but they have no authority other then event security. if your doing something incredibly stupid they will detain you and call for real cops. but you have to be doing somethin really bad for them to do that. i have found them to be friendly and the horses are used to the people. i have always been welcomed to pet the horses. i always ask first but have never been told no

The mounted patrolmen are indeed officers of law, not locals with horses. In my expierence, they play more as safety and guidance, then security! They've seen it all! I've also noticed personal use is okay, but distributing is not. Nitrus is a big no no, and will eventually get cracked down! Other then that, just be safe, moderate and aware! But most of all have FUN!
If you look suspicious! You are Suspicious!!!
Too Excited for Roo still to be another 50 days away!
I think alot of it is also that they dont have the facilities, money, jailspace, nor desire to prosecute and jail as many people as they possibly could. Course they're still liable to give out fines out the ass.

Mob Tactics man, go to any good festival and you'll see how it works... Like someone said, dont be stupid and you'll be ok...
I was curious about the mounted patrol too; IMO they are more helpful than not, they are there to keep the peace, not hassle anyone. As long as they don't see you carrying a tank around they leave you alone.

thanks for finding that. i knew i read it but didnt wanna search for it. there is alot more sieizing your property and money then there are arrests. they have made it so they can confiscat e your property and money so that they can auction it off. i also think that when they take your drugs and pipes that they then give it to someone who gos back to roo with it and sells it. the pigs are just a money making machine and they dont get money arresting out of state hippies. so unless your a endangering pthers or opbviously selling drugs youll be fine. i have had conversations with the mounted patols while smoking a j
Rapport between fans and patrol officers is one of the most critical aspects of successful concert security. A&O mounted patrol riders take special care to set a standard of mutual respect. In addition to learning communication and public service skills, officers are trained in special maneuvers outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures manual written by Frank Keller, CEO of Alpha & Omega, after consulting World War I cavalry manuals housed under guard at the Library of Congress. These maneuvers and formations, recorded almost 100 years ago, still work successfully today to protect young people in the festival setting.

Well thanks alot everyone, you guys made it pretty clear that as long as someone isn't wearing a "I buy lots of drugs and carry them on my person within intent to distribute" t-shirt than they should be ok haha. . . Anyways I can't wait! ;D
Post by futurecowboy on Apr 26, 2006 11:45:25 GMT -5
You'd probably still be OK if you wear that shirt. But that's no excuse to be a blatant idiot about things. You can probably get away with whatever, but out of respect for the organizers and the unbelievably patient staff/patrolment, I try to be discrete even if I don't have to.

exactly, I've seen some people just make the place look like a circus from hell at lik 4 am, just all fucked causin a scene and the security just watched em, I saw a dude get takin down buy a glass dealer from new york for trying to steal a piece and the security just watch the dude get whooped and walk away....not there bussiness they prob thought....and glass dude just sat back down at his booth and chilled....its a cool place...thats why I keep comin back
as far as the glass sellers go....do they really check for ID... ill be like a month away from 18, but i was wondering if they give a shit like everywhere else or what..this could be a dumb question, but i have no clue haha
I would be a little creeped out if a glass seller asked for my ID. It might be a state law about the 18 thing too because in Washington you can buy glass at any age or at least I never got carded when I was a younger.
I'm making my first trip to bonnaroo this year and I had heard about the vehicle search when driving into the park. I was hoping to bring some alcohol into the event with me, but both me and my friends are underage. My question is, how well do they search the cars, and if they did find alcohol would they question ages and possibly confiscate it, or are they more concerned with with searching for other things?
Post by futurecowboy on May 11, 2006 9:42:29 GMT -5
By "driving into the park" do you mean driving into the festival? In which case - if they see/find glass, they'll take it. Otherwise they dont' care if you bring in alcohol. I've never gone underage, so I can't say about that, but I've never been carded for having visible cases of beer while going in.
They do some random searching on occasion. For the most part, they'll say hey, ask you to pop/unlock your trunk, open it, look around, maybe push a few things aside. open your cooler to look for glass, and that's it. Too many people for them to really go deep on everyone. They're looking for tanks & giant piles of illegal things for the most part, and glass .
If you bring some non-glass alcohol, you'll PROBABLY be straight. But no guarantees.
like everyone else said, just be smart about it. the most people they bust are people who don't know any better. People with coolers full of glass.. tanks out in the open thinking it's straight. shit like that.
and for the ID topic. I've never seen ANYONE ask for ID outside of Centeroo (I've seen people carded inside, but never been myself). I've been to bonnaroo at the age of 18, 19, and now 20 this year and have always broght vodka and rum in and never a problem when I want to buy a beer or two from a vender. if you look nervous, or weird about it, maybe they will card you. but just don't worry.
Also another quick question, I know they do the pat-down and the search before you enter Centeroo, but do they do they do the pat-down during the vechicle search as well?
no. it is illegal for the police to search your body without reasonable cause.
it's mandatory for a car search, sure, that's specified in the legals when you buy your ticket, but they cannot search you unless they have a reason to.
going into centeroo is a different story, because you're essentially entering a concert venue.

just to put this out there, everyone should be careful when they enter TN. drive the speed limit, don't drive like a douche b/c the cops will get you. we got stopped last year about 45 minutes north of the venue and they had all out shit all over the side of the road. fucking sucked. the search caused some other dumbass to crash into the back of a truck. stupid.
as far as the festie goes, just don't act like an asshole and no one will fuck w/ you. simple as that.
