this year was cool because i hadn't seen many of the bands before.......best discoveries were apollo sunshine, the hold steady, and the decemberists.......also the flaming lips!!!
Ok, I don't know how many of you stayed after Panic on Sunday night, but I kept hearing some great sounds coming from somewhere, and I went walking to try and figure out what it was.
Eventually over in the RV area, I found a little stage attached to a cafe food-vending area that was all powered by some solar panels on top of the set-up. What an incredible party! It went all night and the band only stopped playing when the sun came up.
Oh yeah, the band was Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, and they played some of the most awesome smooth kick ass reggaeish music I've ever heard. Definitely my best musical surprise of the fest.
As your attorney I advise you to drive at top speed and it'll be a Goddamn miracle if we get there before you turn into some kind of wild animal. Are you ready for that? Checking into a Las Vegas hotel under a phony name with the intent to commit capital fraud with a head full of acid? I certainly hope so...
i didn't really discover any new bands, other than the slip, which we only saw for a couple fo songs but they were good. but some bands i knew about throughly impressed me for than they had before. ben harper, wolfmother and white stripes.
we had a pretty good spot because we'd been sitting under the tent for a while before his set cooling off and it paid off in a huge way. never seen one guy pull off wringing sounds out of so many instruments so well, and never before have i heard such a smooth. funky groove to rock out to. this was definitely the only day set that had me moving without a care in the world for what the temperature was...thank god for spray bottles & the fountain
in second i'm gonna go with tortoise, who also laid down some nice danceable tunes during the heat of the day.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

None of these meet the requirement that I'd never heard a note before, but I knew very little about Xavier Rudd and John Butler going into Bonnaroo and was hugely impressed.
I'd done a lot iof listening ahead of time but all these were new to me in the last few months and very impressive - The Slip, The National, Rod y Gab, The Decemberists and The Black Angels.
Annuals put on a kickass show, despite being delayed by technical difficulties. best new discovery, and fav show of the weekend. maybe just because i was so geeked that they were so into their performance.
This might have been mine.
I had heard their LP awhile back and dismissed it, but ended up scooting in there and really, really enjoying it. Plus, The Whigs were really great for the half hour or so I got to see.
"...well yeah the guitar is good accompaniment but you can't like compose with it; I mean you can't base a whole song around the guitar." -Bob Dylan 1965

That was a fun show! I was camped in camping only right down the street and had passed out after Panic. I woke up a few hours later and was walking to the port-a-pottys when I heard them. I stayed for maybe 20 minutes, but I was literally about to fall asleep standing up I was so exhausted. A great surprise for me, every year but this one I end up being the only one of my freinds up late night Sunday. I'm glad you knew their name, I'll have to check them out again soon.
