Hey, I was just wondering what great new bands people saw at this year's 'Roo that they had never heard before. I found two bands that totally rocked and were a blast to watch that I had never heard a single note from before Bonnaroo.
First was Gogol Bordello. I just wandered up to this show hearing it going nuts and stood and watched... Wow... I only caught the last three song but... wow... I will definitely be seeing a full set from these folks as soon as I get a chance.
The second was The Dynamites, which were in a late night Troo gig. Some friends asked us to come check them out and the place was about half empty when they started playing. By the second song they had the place packed. By the third people were flowing out the sides and everyone was dancing and jumping around and having an awesome time. Super funky! I even went and bought the CD (which absolutely has to be played LOUD to feel as good as it is, so crank that mutha up!).
For me, these were some of the best experiences of going to 'Roo. I was totally blown away by a lot of bands but most of what I saw I had at least heard a couple songs from if not multiple albums. These two, though, came outta nowhere for me and nocked my socks off!
But I've heard voices not in the head Out in the air they called ahead Through ripped out speakers Through thick and thin They found a shelter Under my skin -Evgeny Aleksandrovitch Nikolaev

For me it would be Mute Math. Went to try and get a good spot for Clutch and caught the last three songs, and I was speechless! I am definitely going to be checking them out again.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.

Gillian Welch was one I happened to come across and I really enjoyed her show.
Gogol Bordello was an absolutely amazing live show and I saw the whole thing, but I don't think I would ever actually put their music on my iPod and listen to it on a regular basis.
Dr. Dog was another we accidently happened upon and really enjoyed. I will definitely be picking up some of their music.
"When I was 4 years old, they tried to test my IQ. They showed me a picture of three oranges and a pear. They asked me which one is different, and does not belong. They taught me different....is wrong." -- Ani Difranco
Rodrigo y Gabriela was without a doubt the best show I saw all weekend (and I saw some good ones). Headed to the local music shop tomorrow to pick up the CD.

Annuals put on a kickass show, despite being delayed by technical difficulties. best new discovery, and fav show of the weekend. maybe just because i was so geeked that they were so into their performance.

MuteMath, I'd never heard of them before. They were second only to the Flips for the best show I saw. Immediately went and bought their CD after the show.
First Brazilian Girls and then Gogol Bordello. I'm definitely to see Gogol @ the House of Blues Cleveland in July. Saw the last half or so and was just completely blown away with the energy and excitement. I got some great pictures of guys just outside the tent dancing very funny. GREAT SUCCESS!
When I got home, AT&T is using a BG song in a blackberry commercial.

Even though I had heard them before, The Black Keys and the Annuals stole my rock heart this weekend. The Keys just ripped that guitar a few more a$$holes in their performance, and the Annuals rocked their set despite all the sound difficulties they were having to still put on one of the best of the weekend.
I'm so pissed that I missed Gogol Bordello, but I was literally PASSED OUT in the grass backstage. Too much beer, not enough water!!
For the people that go next year, I can't stress enough about the importance of constantly drinking water... I mean... Look what happened to Ornette Coleman!

Sam Champion! If you missed their Troo Lounge set, you missed it, they were just a great straight-up rock band, great, great crowd interaction. I was glad my ears led me there.
I also checked out Clutch, just to see what the fuss was about, and I liked them a lot, too. Though I'm not new to Tool, I had never seen them live, and that was quite an experience for me.
Also, at the risk of a smiting, I checked out STS9, and I still don't see what the big deal is. I dunno, I guess I like the heavy breakbeats...sorry?
For me it def was Michael Franti & Spearhead. Never heard them before, but they had me and everyone around me dancing like there was no tomorrow...lots of love to that crowd too b/c we were feeling it
