I just found out that they're opening for The Arcade Fire in this tour. So I'm super excited that I can see them there and have one less conflict on the Thursday at Roo.

thursday lookin' rather conflict ridden, but i don't wanna miss the national
I'll be interested to see how people react to their new album. It's a lot quieter than their previous efforts, but it builds on the promise of The Cherry Tree EP. It's beautifully arranged (probably by the Clogs) and features the piano in a prominent role. Most importantly, they've figured out how to simplify their sound and give Beringer's baritone vocals the proper space it needs to work, something they struggled doing on previous efforts. That's not to say they've dumbed it down musically. They've just streamlined it more.

I can't wait to see them. I'm a huge fan of Boxer and I love Alligator too. I actually have tickets to see them in Atlanta the night before they play Bonnaroo. Then I found out yesterday that they're opening for Arcade Fire when I see them on 5/1. So Bonnaroo will be my third National show in two months!

Anybody else heard Boxer yet?
Agreed here. I actually heard from a very reliable source that Bryce Dessner (guitarist and member of Clogs) along with his brother Aaron arranged most of the tracks on Boxer. They apparently had a more orchestral design they wanted, similar to the Bryce Dessner-curated Music Now Festival held in Cincinnati over teh April 5-7 weekend, where he asked all artists playing over the weekend to strip down their performaces, doing something a little more unique. Artists at that included Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond, and Clogs. Suf played with a 4 piece string quartet.
Also, saw the National when they had Clap Your Hands Say Yeah open for them on CYHSY's first full-blown national tour. It was interesting because a lot of people were there for the buzz of CYHSY, but the true music fans stayed for The National (supporting the boys in their former hometown of Cinci) and they ROCKED! I can't say enough about their live performance. It truly was breathtaking.

Yeah, I saw the last show of that tour. It was a good show. It was funny though, all the people in front were 16 and 17 year olds there for CYHSY, and when they finished, there were a lot of confused looking teenage girls not getting the older tall guy freaking out on the microphone in a baritone. They filed out two songs in giving the rest of us there ample room.
Don't get me wrong, CYHSY is a nice catchy band, but they're tiddly winks compared to what The National brings to the table. Glad to see The National finally getting their due.

Greetings Inforoosters. I thought I would finally add my two cents to this board instead of lurking in the background.
I saw the National for the first time last night in Atlanta when they opened for Arcade Fire. I was extremely impressed with their performance and I can't wait to see them play a longer set at Bonnaroo. They had a lot of energy and sounded great considering the majority of the crowd was waiting patiently for Arcade Fire.
The songs off their new album sounded great live in addition to their older songs, which were even better probably due to being road-tested material. The sound was a little muddy at times due to too much bass, but the band made up for it with energy and good songs. The only negative about the show last night was they did not play "Karen." Maybe I'll hear it during the longer set at Bonnaroo.
For those that haven't seen them yet, I suggest checking them out at Bonnaroo this year.
wow...to each his own but that is one of the last things i would think to say about CYHSY.
I can't wait to see The National! I'm loving Boxer! It's nothing compared to Alligator, but it's good stuff. I'm really worried about conflicts with them at the roo though...

Yeah i saw the National last night open for the Arcade Fire and they were great. They're new album is going to be great. Last night also proved though that Bonnaroo needs to get the Arcade Fire this year or next year but that is beside the point. The National was awesome will definitely check them out as long as they don't conflict.
For those who haven't downloaded the leak of Boxer (you're stronger than I) this is the opening track, Fake Empire, posted LEGALLY on Pitchfork (the indie Bible). theres also a little teaser video of them playing it live (this is also on their main site).
They're really good. I am going to see them in Louisville two days before Bonnaroo. If they knock my socks off, I will check them out at Bonnaroo as well.
Boxer officially came out yesterday. Been listening to the leaked copy for a month...damn that album's good.
Favorite refrain of the day: "You get mistaken for strangers by your own friends when you pass them at night under the silvery, silvery citibank lights arm in arm in arm and eyes and eyes glazing under oh you wouldn’t want an angel watching over surprise, surprise they wouldn’t wannna watch another uninnocent, elegant fall into the unmagnificent lives of adults"

I thought about going to this show, but I think I'm just going to rest up for an unbelievable set at Roo... And don't worry, they'll blow your socks off...
Glad to see they're playing pretty conflict free on Thursday so I can catch their whole set. I've been getting into Boxer slowly but surely over the past couple weeks.
Do they match up favorably with Arcade Fire sound wise- meaning they styles compliment each other? Are they a band that knowing the music ahead of time greatly enhances the live show?
