I hear they are VERY trippy. Who's the Inforooster with the most first-hand experience????
I've never seen their live show first hand, but I have seen them play live on DVDs. All I can say is, prepare yourself. Their show is the closest thing to Pink Floyd in modern music. It is really an event.
The video screen is synced perfect with all kinds of trippy sequences and images... then you have the light show... which is completely insane.
Not to mention the music itself is trippy as hell.
There are going to be a lot of people after the Tool show trying to put back together their blown minds.
They are THE MOST psychedelic live band in the world at the moment.

Here is something just to give you a very small taste. Their show is vastly superior to what is shown here. These videos are quite old. However, you can still see the trippiness.
....and, yes... Maynard sometimes dresses in drag.

Here is a more modern one from 2001... Keep in mind their show has gotten light years even more trippy than this in the last 6 years.
Yeah... sorry about the video quality. I have some great DVDs with near pro-shot video quality, but those aren't available on youtube. You'll just have to take my word for it.
if you get a good spot in the crowd, make sure you have some wet wipes with you. 1) because your jaw will be in the mud. 2) you're gonna need to wipe your ass because you will sh!t yourself.
i've seen them about 7 times since '01 and they impress me more and more every time. i only missed them in my area once. they were supposed to play in dayton on september 12th 2001 and well, we all know what happened on the 11th. fu<king terrorists.
if you're into the stuff that makes you "see music" and "taste colors" DO NOT miss them.

i have seen Tool twice (1st time was about a month after 9/11/01; second time was this past fall for the current tour), and I tell you that everything that okcoumputer said about them is 100% total truth!!!! And as thejizzo said in this post....this is one of the ultimate bands you will EVER see for those of you who like to 'see music' and 'taste colors'! Tool's live show is trippier then anything I have ever seen. Beautiful lasers and lights; and the psychedelic videos that are projected on the screens while they play are the BEST I have ever seen at any concert! Equally psychedelic, dark, introspective, beautiful, and full of vitality. The only band out there right now that may be more psychedelic then Tool are The Black Angels.......and they are playing Thursday at the Roo! Two must see shows for those of you who love dark psychedelia, even if you don't like heavier music. (If you like the vibe of the Dead's famous song 'Dark Star', then don't miss these two bands!)

I must say, when I saw them I was a fan but not a HUGE fan, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. They are extremely trippy...when I saw them Maynard was in front of a white screen so you couldn't see him, they had 4 huge screens playing trippy videos, and at one point they had naked acrobats climbing ropes. It was crazy! Not to mention I saw them in the rain, which made it that much better. Those who think Tool doesn't belong at Bonnaroo are wrong...it is definitely one of the most pyschedelic shows you will see.
Tool at Bonnaroo will be my 5th time seeing the band.
I thought the Lateralus tour was amazing, but the 10,000 Days tour is just f*ckin nastiness altogether. I've caught the first leg of this 10,000 Days tour with a headfull of E - it blew me away, so it's otherworldly to think that they've upgraded their stage set - i think they have a few tricks up their sleeve for the roo ;-)
If you plan on catching Tool, my advice is to be mentally prepared - especially if you plan on catching the set with an altered state of mind; and take thejizzo's advice...bring the wipes.
One of the best things about Tool, being a musician myself, is that they are able to bring the intricacies of their studio recordings to a live situation. First time I saw them, I was absolutely blown away by how faithfully they are able to reproduce all the sick fills, solos, Maynard's screams, everything. An interview I once read with Danny Carey (drummer) confirms that they do that on purpose... He figures, something he does on the drums is going to trip someone's trigger, so it's up to him to bring to a live setting what made that person smile in the first place.
However, that is not to say that everything is plastic-sounding, predictable, and you might as well just put Lateralus on and crank the headphones. A Tool show is just... indescribable... Please check them out if you can. You won't be disappointed.

Hell just listening to their music at home gives me goosebumps, I can't even imagine how amazing their live show is going to be. I am going to have a serious grin on my face all night!!

IVe only seen them once and it was great as im sure you expected me to say. However the only song I wanted them to play was ticks and leeches and they played every song on lateralus except that : ( i heard it hurts his voice too much so they dont do it live often. after getting the 10000 days album i was definitly disappointed since there are actually only about 4.5 songs on it but I know the show will be insane. looking forward to it.
^4.5 songs? vicarious, jambi, wings for marie, 10000days, the pot, lost keys, rosetta stoned, intension, right in two. thats 9 songs, and most of them are over 8 minutes.
I've seen them 4 times from 1992(!) to 2004. Before they introduced the visual elements they were incredibly visceral performers, constantly challenging and churning the music and crowd. With the visuals it becomes an increasingly complex experience, especially with their music deepening. The venue further augments the scenario as well-- outdoor shows playing an expansive, sea-like undulation where the music really rolls; indoor performances feeling like almost a surround-sound-and-visual experience if you stare at the screens. The Roo situation should be pretty incredible.
This was my first Tool show and was incredibly weirded out. ??? In a good way. Tool tends to break the rules when it comes to concerts with ambient noise or acrobats for intermission, not leaving the stage for an encore break but sitting and watching the crowd for a bit, and so on. As close to Pink Floyd as anyone.

best live experience ive ever had.
world class light show is completely un-toppable.
visuals are as intense and mystifying as the music.
last tour, they played on a completely white stage, which turned out to be a giant video screen, so these AMAZING visual displays were projected from underneath them...this, by the band's own admission, was purposely to give people in the "not so good" seats a different show and an advantage to those with floor tickets.
deep, thought provoking, almost religious experience.
also - open-ended....the band purposely doesnt explain any of their lyrics outright to encourage people to think for themselves and take what they want from the music.
WOW! Thanks for the info. I have never really listened to tool and wasn't real sure how they were going to fit in the bonnaroo vibe. I AM OVERWHELMINGLY STOKED TO SEE THEM NOW! THIS SHOW IS GONG TO BE INCREDIBLE!

I cant wait for this show, and I brought up something in the NIN possibility thread. I stated that Trent Reznor and Maynard nearly completed a side project code named Tapeworm. If that was to happen, that would be a beautiful thing.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

So true. I can't decide If I want to be somewhat far from the stage, so I can see the insane laser, light show. It's so freaking intense, and I heard there next tour is going to be even more intense.
If you don't own a TOOL cd you should go out and buy Lateralus, and get into a different kind of mindset. Maybe a pre-screening before the later though.

This is exactly how I feel! AEnema is going to be amazing. I can't wait to sing along with that song.
God I can't believe that album is at least 10 years old or getting close to it. I had it my Jr. year of high school. Damn. hehe.
I'm glad to hear their live shows are so great, my bf will be glad to read the similarities
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
