Oh lord....I guarantee you 9 out of 10 MTV viewers couldn't even recognize one single Sonic Youth song. They MIGHT have got a spin or two on MTV back in the Dirty days, but I'm sure that would have only been on 120 minutes or something.
Sonic Youth is probably one of the most un-MTV type bands at this concert.
but the mtv crowd recognizes the name and associates it with cool... they dont do that with phil lesh or mmw that was my point.. it you read things properly that was made abundantly clear, you damn near quoted me word for word
Who is this mtv crowd? And why in the world do you think they associate Sonic Youth with cool?? Of my friends that listen to mainstream music most have no idea who Sonic Youth is, and if they do, they associate with with boring, dorky, annoying music...about as far from cool as you can get.

i bought my ticket to go see music and enjoy an atmosphere that is the greatest on earth...we are having a discussion in a thread that is specifically about the mtv influence at roo or did ya misinterpret MTV???? just because im trying to have a conversation about some of the issues that i see evolving dosent mean im hating on a certain type of fan or a certain type of music... just refrencing what to me is an obvious attempt to attract newcomers from a mainstream fanbase to the festival... i have no problem with that except the mainstream destroys things...they talked about stopping bonnaroo after a couple of people passed away at roo... what do you think they will do if there are fights all over, and people come back to find their property stolen or destroyed, what about when the porta pottys start getting abused or tossed around...not saying its gonna happen this year but if this progression continues it will happen sooner or later... hope that answers your question

The problem I have with you Keith is the negative connotations you always use when mentioning the "new crowd". In your eyes it is obviously unwelcome, but all you are doing is pre-judging people, and you don't even know who these people are. You can try to lump them into some vague category based on what you think other people think are cool, but don't you see how impossible that is?
Isn't this festival also supposed to be about acceptance and getting along with your fellow human? I know you'll go on to say that the mtv crowd is going to come in here and ruin that, but don't you see that you're already doing that?
Post by keithk1055 on Mar 28, 2006 13:44:47 GMT -5
mtv did a tiny litle blip about roo on mtv news they did not cover it.... and there have never been this many mtv bands on the lineup before, imo that is undeniable

Sonic Youth were actually considered too noisy by the typical MTV viewer of that day. While some might have liked them, they were mostly preoccupied with bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Sonic Youth was, for the most part, reserved to your typical artsy college kid. Sonic Youth have never had a 'hit' with the MTV crowd and, likely, never will. Sonic Youth fans are now either a) The remnants of those artsy college kids from back in the day or b) Indie kids who also take a liking to post-punk, noiserock, art-rock, and grunge-that-doesn't-suck-rock.

Yeah man....you better watch out for those radiohead, petty, beck, sonic youth, bright eyes, and death cab fans...that's a rabid bunch....you better walk around strapped for your own protection.

99% of them are welcome...its the few that cause the problems that make the whole group intolerable at roo.....is this as mainstream as woodstock and all the problems it had ..no, but you can see a definite shift in that direction..if you cant see the evoloution form o2 to 06 towards the mainstream your in denial and just wanna be argumentative, if you go back and read this whole thread then you will see it is a running conversation about this topic and it was made clear that it was a small percentage of the people that are the problem.. i even said word ofr word that if you are not doing these things i am not refering to you....i have at least an equal ammount of comments on inforoo that are helpful and positive... i dont know why everyone is so against talking about the problems in roo and life... if they dont get discussed then they will just be allowe to get out of control... you may disagree with my opinion but it dosent mean im being negative towrds you
Post by Hipster Doofus on Mar 28, 2006 13:54:52 GMT -5
I'm not saying you're being negative towards me, you're being negative to a large group of people that you are assuming you know....ignorance and bigotry....strong words, but they come to mind so often when reading your posts.

damn your not getting it...this is not about hating on radio head or bright eyes it is about a change in the crowd that roo is attempting to draw...if you cant see that then fine, but i see no reason to come in and turn what was an opinonated conversation into a my opinion is right yours is wrong and your a judgemental idiot... disagree with my fine.. but say something intelligent or say nothing at all, not your wrong your a judgmental prick why are you even going to roo....if your not capable of joining a back and forth conversation abotu a topic without calling your opinion right and anothers is and insulting then maybe you should just observe till you get the jist of it
and by the way I NEVER SAID SONIC YOUTH WAS PLAYED ON MTV!!!!! IN FACT I SPECIFICALLY SAID THAT THEY DIDNT GET MUCH PLAY TIME!!!!...do you guys just come in and read the last 2 threds and throw your ignorant thoughts about my opinion out there when ya haven even gathersd all the info in the thread? if you are reading them you guys must have scored very low on the reading comprehension part of the sats

Funny you would say something about not reading posts because you obviously aren't reading mine. I'm not saying you're hating on me, hating on radiohead, or hating on radiohead fans....you are hating on an imaginary group of people that only exist in your head. I acknowledge that this will change the crowd. I've never said it wouldn't, ok? As I said in one of my first posts in this thread MY PROBLEM IS WITH THE NEGATIVE CONOTATIONS YOU USE! Do you understand?
And regarding Sonic Youth. NOBODY SAID THAT YOU SAID SY WAS ON MTV! You did say that MTV fans think SY is cool. That is what has been debated since.

raise your hands if you thought that the post labled MTV???? on a bonnaroo board was going to be a conversation as to the positive effects of mtv on musical evenets such as this.... if you would like to point out the positive thigns about mtv feel free to do so, if you feel that there hasnt been a progression towards the mainstream ( your in some serious denial if ya buy that) then maybe this disussion isnt what your looking for ... you might wanna try man of the threads that arent labled MTV???? for a positive discussion i recommend the armys on ecstacy... a nice little thread about the greatness of oysterhead..it will make ya feel a little better

Obviously the issue we're having isn't what MTV will do to Roo, but what you are lumping into MTV. If you are too dense to realize that, then there really is no reason to go forward.
It sounds like, for starters, we're confusing "MTV" and "mainstream." MTV, currently, is along the lines of Usher, Britney Spears, Hilary Duff, and Simple Plan. Safe to say there are no Bonnaroo bands that fit into this category. Mainstream, however, might refer to bands that keith was talking about (DCFC, Beck, Petty, etc.) - bands that got (or are getting) regular airplay and became fairly popular at one time or another.
That being said, I don't see what makes the amount of mainstream bands in this year's 'roo different from previous. In the past we have had Dave, Maroon 5, Joss Stone, Roots - all of which made as much or more of a mainstream pop impact than this year. If there are going to be a different 'kind' of people at Bonnaroo, I don't think the band lineup is to blame.
Instead of worrying about bad apples changing the Bonnaroo crowd, I think it can be just as likely that the traditional Bonnaroo crowd can change these people. That's what happened to me at my first Bonnaroo - most concerts I had been to had more aggressive people and an overall agitated vibe - but the attitide at Bonnaroo opened my eyes. I couldn't help but be friendly and cooperative, it was all around me, I was infected with it. Let's be the ones that spread the 'infection' of a good vibe.

you are saying im hating on a whole group of people and it has been made clear i am not....just a small percent that cause problems that you dont see with the typical roo community....this discussion is not about particular bands or their fans or even this years lineup... its about a progression towards the mainstream as a whole for roo...but whatever im done trying to explain everything to people who dont have an interest in conversation jus misrepresenting what you say so they can call you things
PS those imaginary people sure did do a number on woodstock and countless other concert venues around the nation..
Post by keithk1055 on Mar 28, 2006 14:15:54 GMT -5
i think the difference this year is that they arent tent acts the are main stage and headliners... but again for me its not even this years lineup... its the progression of the lineup for the last 3 years......

BAM! That's it, right there. You are equating the new crowd with those that went crazy at woodstock (not that deaths at festivals don't happen at friendly little farms though, huh). There is absolutely no reason for you to be doing that.

FYI - I haven't smited you once. Don't you think it's quite a conicidence that this only happens when YOU offer a differing opinion? Or maybe it has something to do with how you present it, what do you think?
Post by keithk1055 on Mar 28, 2006 14:26:24 GMT -5
im not sure what you mean... i know a couple people died at roo.. im not talkin about that.. im talkin about fires and fightss and thefts and and venue destruction not natural deaths/killing??? if thats what your meaning
Post by keithk1055 on Mar 28, 2006 14:29:46 GMT -5
well for the most part it starts off as a conversation between a couple of people.. and then somewhere along the way someone comes in and reads 1 quote form 1 post and uses it out of context to turn the whole thing inot a i am right your wrong and everyone is arseholes and then i get my spites out of the back and forth that results....its all good i kinda like em... i dont want to be liked by most of the people who are smiting me....i suspect most of them will be grounded when roo comes around anyways

well i can see that the kiddies have shown up to stay... cant get back on topic and off of the insults so i guess i will just leave this alone.... i guess its loony to have an opinion and its cool to throw insults and judge other peoples opinions and turn everything they say into a negative insult towards smoeone....mainstream sucks... few will disagree with that.... roo is moving that way.. its a fact...its not about bands and groups of people it is about that progression....oh well i am above insults repeated and pointless spiting, should have known it wouldnt be too long before the thread MTV??? would draw in the immature crowd that im refering to

Goddammit keith, those little smartass comments are what irritates us, have you not read the thread about what we all do in real life?....not too many high schoolers here buddy, you make for some pretty good conversation, but i do agree the way that you present somethings, and the way it comes off gets irritating....i know your just as excited as the rest of us, lets chat about things a little less centered around how our precious Bonnaroo is never gonna be the same, cause we already know it wont be the same as each year has proven.

this would be funny if it wasn't so annoying....look, you're only getting negative remarks thrown your way because of how you talk about people/bands and how you present yourself. It's not the other way around, so stop trying to play the victim.
Post by keithk1055 on Mar 28, 2006 14:44:53 GMT -5
i hear ya...but this is a thread that was about mtv at roo.... and my refering to someone as grounded or immature because they come in throwin around insults and what not is not what i would consider a smart as comment... although i do make a few of those.... also i do use mtv to describe mainstream.... i do that because the 2 are so closely associated... i guess i should be more accurate... the times i was inaccurrate i thoguht i had made it clear that i didnt think they were mtv bands in the sense they get played there all the time but that that mainstream crowd is drawn to a headliner such as radio head more then they would say wsp... i cant make it any clearer then saying it.. as i also said that i wasnt refering to all of the fans of mainstream just the small percentage who have habitually ruined concerts and festies
some of you have a very difficult time accepting others opinions.. my opinons were not seen as an attack on any group of people until 2 hours ago when yall started it all up...
in the last 20 posts like 15 are about me and my opinions.. there was none of that before yall showed up.. just a convesation, debating different sides of an issue.. maybe we should start a thread about me so you guys dont have to clutter up our discussions
