When I went to Roo in 04, I kinda lucked out a few times seeing bands I didn't think I had a chance to see(because of time contraint) or just accidently ran into something I liked. For example, I had a conflict with Damien Rice and Galactic, so I chose Damien Rice, but because of the weather, Galatic was delayed for a half an hour, so when Damien was done, I was shocked to see them playing..which made me one happy guy :-)
I thought the other thing that was kinda cool was on Sunday Maroon 5 was supposed to play (I was going to check them out for my gf) but they backed out at the last minuite, so I wandered in to the super jam tent. To my surprise they had Maceo Parker( I am a big fan of his work) with Soulive(which I really didn't get to see a full set from earlier that day) and others. Its kinda funny how things work out in the end.
Anyone else have stories like this? If do please share :-)
My favorite fateful discovery of this kind was randomly finding Medeski and Chris Wood (Stevens might have been there too ) playing with Vusi Mahlasela to a tent with a few dozen spectators in it in '03. It wasn't a cameo either, they played the whole set with him.
I was wandering around between Galactic and James Brown, and stumbled into the tent where Vusi Mahlasela of Amandala was playing. It was the smallest crowd I had ever seen for a Bonnaroo performance (not counting the fifth tent), about 20-40 people I would guess. He was singing beautifully and was obviously a vibrant, amazing performer. As I walked closer to the stage I realized that Medeski and Chris Wood were in his backing band! The few people that were there were having a blast and it felt like a little secret we discovered. Amazing. From there I checked out Spearhead for the first time and was thrilled to hear some political energy on stage in some of the best songs I heard all weekend (I'm now a big fan).

well I kinda have a fate story. I was waiting at the other tent last year for secret machines to come on and my body started heating up and heating up and I felt like I was going to overheat but then out of no where this sweet strong cool wind picks up and cools me down. Then secret machines come on and play my favorite song "It's a Bad Wind That Don't Blow Somebody Some Good" and who would have thought, I just got a wind that blew me some good.
It was fate that the wind would come and cool me of to hear that song. lol.

My brother and I went to the radio stage to see Ozomatli. The schedule was pushed back because of rain and Xavier Rudd came up instead. We thought he was from Ozo until he started playing and then we couldn't believe our eyes or ears.
In '04, we ran under the closest tent when the deluge occured and were "trapped" for Erin McKeown's set. Fantastic.
I'm not sure if this is fate or not but in '03 it was like Friday night, at the end of the latenight sets, and I was at camp with everyone that I came with. I wanted to walk back down to centeroo and look around some more. I had heard that some bands had played unannounced sets the year before and I was just hoping to catch something unexpected. Everyone I was with said they were too tired and just went to sleep. I didn't want to go alone but I was at 'Roo to have fun so I said fu*k it and I left alone. I was in centeroo for maybe 20 min. when I see this huge parade coming my way. It was late and most people still around were finishing up a latenight set so I was one of the first people to see it. I ran up and Galactic was riding the float and playing with Charlie Hunter . I got close enough that I lit the bass players cig for him. I had yet to see Galactic ever at this point and had just gotten into them so this was amazing. Part of what made 'Roo '03 my favorite.
