Yeah i brought my camelback into centeroo full almost every time i went in last year. Theres always one or two lines moving along quicker than the rest going into centeroo. I didnt notice any problems with security last year at all, i walked in the gate so i cant say about the roads but as far as the fest goes it was lax IMO
obviously i imagined all of that that i stated......and i suppose no one remembers all the flyers hanging asking for donations for the dude to get out of jail after a "random search"......they were on the portajohns and at some of the vendors stands......anyway it doesn't matter......ive always loved being at bonnaroo and treasure the memories......so defending it to me is missing the point.
re: arguementative you are not at all.....if you recall that was the entire point of the setup.....i never had any probs in 2004......nor did i have problems after 11pm-ish......
the only point to my post is that bonnaroo is not the wide open fest that is constantly claimed except for maybe late nights and sundays......regardless of what yall post, i saw ppl going to jail.....i waited in line for hours watching ppl get searched at gates and some being turned over to security......i was thoroughly searched at gates during daylight hours (except for sunday)......did i still have a good time?....hell yes......would i go back this year?.....absolutely, if they had more of the bands i travel to see......
the moral of the story is......contain yourself during the day and party like hell at night, cause nobody cares then......behave going in and coming out and everything should be alright.......
and if you do find yourself in one of the nazi check point lines......if you look dirty and havent showered, the pat down isn't as thorough
yall have fun and fire one up for me.....no hard feelings, i love yall.....just trying to keep you safe......peace,
I don't see where anyone said that in this thread. It's just that your experience was not the same as other peoples. I've never had any trouble at all any of the years, but that may be because I'm a little older than the mean (36) and I have short hair and dress fairly conservatively while travelling.
But your warnings to keep it on the down low on the way in and during the day are great, IMO. The people who stand out are the one's who the police/security target with their very limited resources. No one would be able to get in the place if they tossed/searched every car that came through.
Security has definitely tightened up but I don't really see that as the people SuperFly's fault. I think that anytime you have a festival this big year after year the cops are gonna get involved. Especially since until this year it has increased in size. The first few years they probably didn't know what to expect. Now, especially with deaths, they can't turn away anymore. I don't really think people will get hassled inside but definitely be careful on the way down and outside the gates. It's just too good to be true for cops. They know pretty much any vehicle is gonna get them something.
This year will be my first at 'roo, and I'm excited as hell! I've been to Coachella the past 2 years and had an awesome time, but I feel that roo is gonna blow coahella out of the water. Although I like the lineup for coachella way better (we've got daft punk and massive attack this year) but I think bonnaroo should be just as amazing!
10K Lakes Festival has added more bands and their final headliner. Phil and Friends are the 3rd headliner. Other additions are:
-The Everyone Orchestra (hopefully Fishman will be with them) -Great American Taxi feat. Vince Herman -Railroad Earth -Shooter Jennings -Garaj Mahal -Green Lemon -Fat Maw Rooney -God Johnson -Freshwater Collins -White Iron Band -Hooch -Down Lo -Benzos -New Primitives -Unity -Moses Mayes -GypsyFoot -Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank
I think one of the coolest things is some of these bands get mulitple sets. I know Railroad Earth is playing a latenight set and also a daytime set. I like how if there are set conflicts you can still catch the band a different day, or see them in a latenight setting or a laid back daytime set.
Not to be a hard on or anything, but I don't really see the appeal of 10K...it seems there are so many festivals around the country that are smaller, more intimate that include many of the same acts with less hype. Just for an example, The Old Settlers Festival's got a pretty nice little lineup, is being held at the very beginning of the festival season and is located right next to the best bbq restaurant in Texas.
For me a festival has to have more than a bunch of great bands to get me to haul my ass out of Austin. It has to have acts that I'm not going to get to see otherwise. And while there is a ton of hassle associated with big festivals, there's a reason for it. They have the draw. A festival without those one of a kind draws, but with a medium to large crowd, just doesn't hold the appeal for me.
man this is a great lineup... and the two sets for headliners is great... other big name acts are playing multiple sets on different days, it is a more "jam band" focused event but id say it is the best lineup of the summer.... or tied with roo... if 10klf had oysterhead they would be the best lineup by far and away... roo is more diverese but id say 10klf is probably better imo... and roo is definetly not the right fest to come to for the small and intimate if 10klf is too large and impersonal for ya... austin would be a long drive to 10klf but id bet it would be well worth it.... i know i was only planning to do roo this year but now im trying to work 10k into the budget.... and i challenge you to find these acts at any other fest... i think it will be the festival of the year, its like roo has become the allpurpose festival and 10k is the jam fest

Last year I went to Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza and plan on attending both again this year (as well as Coachella this year). Yes, I agree, that comparing those festivals is like comparing apples to oranges but I am still going to do it anyway:
The best part about Bonnaroo as compared to Lollapalooza or Coachella is the value... if you are coming from outside the area, with 'roo, you do not need to rent a hotel room or pay extra for camping.
IMO, the festival with the best overall line-up (of the three mentioned in my post) is Lollapalooza BUT, Bonnaroo has a lot of smaller bands who I haven't yet listened to which can always make it interesting. And there is something to be said about the eclecticness (is that a word?) of Bonnaroo.
I don't think either Coachella or Lollapalooza will be able to hold a flame to the atmosphere and vibe at Bonnaroo.
While the extracurriculars at Bonnaroo (silent disco, comedy tent, parade...) may be fun, and free, the opportunities that exist in Chicago for sightseeing, museums, and smaller (more intimate) concerts can certainly be worth the trip. Last year I saw the Walkmen and Ambulance LTD at a tiny bar (Schupas) that probably holds about 200 people max (anytime I head to Chicago I make an effort to see who is playing there) and then went to the House of Blues to see STS9. The next night I went to a bar (The Darkroom) and saw the Brian Jonestown Massacre up close and personal... that stuff just cannot be beat.
Ok... so my post has not came to any clear conclusion about which festival is best... I would have to say every festival seems to have something to offer everybody.

Hey DJ, I'm doing Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza this year as well, and I was wondering: Are you saying there are late night shows at places like Schuba's, Metro, The Riv, Aragon, Double Door, and House of Blues after the festival is over during the day? That'd be great, but, if it's true, I need to get my hands on tickets in short order.

I dont know how many festies you guys go to but as far as im concerned people getting arrested is pretty normal activity at these things (especially ones of this size). I dont think Bonnaroo was shaken down to the point where people need to be scared, but people always need to be smart. I read an article about some dude last year who got busted with mad mushrooms that were on the seat next to him in a backpack (no sh*t right). When i say security is lax that doesnt mean march up to the gate with a trash bag full of ecstacy slung over you shoulder...
Mob tactics will prevail, they cant arrest us all... just dont be stupid or you'll be the one making the sacrifice...

Indeed there are extra shows at those locations. If it is anything like last year, they will all be announced on the Lollapalooza website once it gets closer and actually begin the night before Lollapalooza opens (last year I saw We Are Scientists and Cake on the Friday night before the festival started).
Most are concerts but the one I went to with the Brian Jonestown Massacre actually seemed to be more of an "after-party"
umm.. you are absolutely the first and only person i have ever heard utter those words...
don't listen to this coconut reema, I have a bunch of friends who all think the Coachella lineup is better and aren't even going to bonnaroo. I like Bonnaroo's lineup a little better as far as headliners go but I'm super-stoked for both... the lucky ones like you and I are going to experience both. see ya at the massive attack set!
