Petty should have retired BEFORE the ROO. Absolutely pathetic. I've seen him more than a dozen times over his career. I was really bummed at the news that he played a private bah mitzvah for the child of a scumbag war profiteer and was going to make a sign to the effect of him being a sellout and carry it front row at the roo this year. But, not wanting to poop on the parade and make it all about me, I tried to find the high point. I told myself, "this is the ROO and Petty is on his 30th anniversary tour. It could be off the hook. We could see buddy guy or trey or anybody. Stevie Nicks will be there..."
Then come to see him W A S T E the longest headling spot of the weekend, playing a meager 2+ hours in a 3.5 hour slot. Just dinosaur f'ing lame. And what was with the cross/bigger than jesus/adore me poses. Bring some passion or stay home. fizzle fo shnizzle jobber set
isn't smiting opposed to the whole karma thing anyway. especially for voicing an OPINION in a thread about disappointments ? i bow down to the all powerful pusher of the smite button. i bet you kick dogs when noone is looking too !
I've seen him once before, 1996 i think, in charlotte, and it was awesome. Maybe I was expecting that. But, i didn't get the puppet thing. And before you say, 'what's there to get? it was puppets. you're not cool,' that;s not the point. they weren't matching with the music. ti was kind of funny, but more like a bad MadTV skit.
playing loser from CD was horrible. had that not happened, i probrbaly wouldn't be nearly as disappointed. imagine radiohead playing creep from the cd during break. i would bet that 60% of people there didn't realize it was being played from the cd.
Overall, he had no energy and no heart. i might as well have listened to odelay at the camp site while drinking free beer.

I'm a dumbass and I missed the Superjam. I think GrAb is an all-star cast and Phil Lesh joined. I do see you're point though, there were a lot of other great musicians there. I thought John Popper was gonna get up there. Infact, I went back to my tent and skipped the parade and shows and asked my nieghbor the next morning "Who played the superjam?"and he said "Yeah man, John Popper was there". Whatever.
Must have been his God complex. Fashionably late or whatever. But tell me why he quit early !? Maybe he had a right wing thingy to suck on for half a million !

was anyone else dissapointed that Phil didnt have any extra special guests? and that he only played one encore? I felt like we could have all used some more Phil and Friends, but maybe his plan was to leave us wanting more so that we'd buy tickets to the summer tour. Worked for me, but how can i pass up half of phish, the duo, and phil lesh and friends?

Why the hell was Petty 45 minutes late anyway? I mean, wtf.
he was 45 mins late because the heartbreakers are not a jam band and couldnt fill the 3.5 hour slot he was given, plus i bet he wanted to make sure everyone saw how clever he is by having them play the entire Heartbreak Hotel album > get it? Heartbreakers - Heartbreak Hotel - WHOAA mind blowing
Phil probably didn't have any guests because he was closing out the fest. I'm sure a lot of the other musicians had already left by then. Maybe not but that would be my guess.

beck for sure, it sounded like a cd playing, nuthin like i expected...
i agree that it was very much like a CD, and i USUALLY hate that stuff..but i had good time at Beck for some reason. it may have been my anticipation of what was about to happen..but i thought there was some cool moments in the beck set (Black Tambourine, Do You Realize, Puppets, Girl)
my biggest dissappointment was that my cloning machine didnt get finished before roo, so i had to miss les claypools set.

I wasn't at 'roo so I didn't see Beck but I don't see how you could possibly compare a recording playing with a puppet dancing to Phish jumping on trampolines during YEM. The band is actually still playing the song live while jumping on the trampolines. Unless I'm mistaken I'm under the impression that Beck was resting, not actually playing the song. If I'm wrong then my bad, but actually performing live while jumping on a trampoline is different than a recording playing.
thats exactly it. its not like beck was subsituting a live track with a studio recording. he was taking an encore break, so even if they didn't put on the loser studio track, they still wouldn't have been playin
Oh ok I got ya man. Phish was definitely a theatric band. Would have loved to have been to the show where they rode around over the crowd in a giant hot dog while playing.
Antelope---That's just it. While Petty and the Heartbreakers are not a "jam" band, they can and certainly have jammed things out. And they've got the material. The Heartbreakers, especially guitarist Mike Campbell, appear on a multitude of other artists' albums and are a very diverse crew. That being said, their typical show rarely changes from night to night on tour. Right down to the same audience interaction-cheezy vocal cues for lighting/sound or whatever he says the same gd thing over and over night after night for. My issue was that this was just not a typical night on a typical tour. There was the potential for this to rage. Petty has covered everyone from the Ventures to Beck. He played a string of like 20 sold out shows in a row at the fillmore. Where was his heart and soul friday night ? Methinks in front of a mirror, striking poses of self admiration. SUPERSTAR--hang it up with your passion !

Well, to be fair, TPATH did cover 4 songs in his set. (5 if you count the Wilbury's song) I dont think any of the big bands (maybe UM/DB) covered that many songs. I mean, if you are looking for cover songs.

My only real disappoint was probably Andrew Bird - I just wasn't feeling his set. And I think it had more to do with the setting than the performer. I feel like his act would work wonderfully in a smaller environment.
But that's the closest it came. Every other group I saw brought it, hard.
Thank God! for the Sonic Stage... the Andrew Bird show there on Sunday was 10,000x more intimate than his Friday show.
My disappointment of the weekend would have to be Ben Folds... I've seen him probably 30 times and they just seemed a bit off on Friday afternoon... I was still entertained though.
Wasn't looking for cover songs, per se. Just pointing out that along with 30 years of stellar album material, there was potential to fill a 3.5 hour slot be it originals, covers, or collaborations. It was more like a typical clear channel Petty show. I was just hoping for some dynamic from him that said "Yeah I know this is the first and the longest headlining slot at the 5th anniversary Roo and we're gonna bring it !" Several bands came with the heart(Buddy Guy, MMJ, etc). Ironically or not, they brought the heartbreak.

i also thought the petty set was lacking "something"..that was the case the last time i saw him too. maybe its time for him to hang it up, or for me to stop shelling out $$$ to see him..its the same exact show every time, with less and less energy.

I too wished Petty had played longer... but he's what? 70 years old by now? Give the man a break, how many people his age get out on an outdoor stage in the summer in the south and put on a longer performance?

then he shouldnt have taken the 3 1/5 hr headliner spot..or superfly shouldnt have given it to him..i am not hatin on petty, i love the guy..but he was the weakest show of the weekend imho.
I'd have to say Oysterhead. Les was awesome as usual but Trey just didn't seem to have it, not like he did at Superjam, not even close. Rusted Root also just sounded uninspired. I thought Deadboy was very mediocre. This is all kinda pointless though, cause all the amazing sets I saw far outweigh any disappointments.
I think for some reason people love criticize Trey. I hear the same stuff over and over but have yet to witness a seriously horrible performance and he still blows most of the guitarists of his time away. I was right up front and man I think they both had it....well all 3 of them actually...it was an amazing show. I don't know what else anyone could ask for.
gotta agree with you on that one... Trey had it going on Friday and Saturday... you could just tell he was in the best of moods.. that Oysterhead show was seriously hot.
Not saying this was anybody's reason for criticizing Trey but it has become incredibly popular to hate on Trey and even Phish for that matter. At first people were in the minority when they disliked Trey or Phish, now your in the minority if you enjoy them, or so it seems.
This year i went as a VIP and the "free" food for the VIP's in the VIP tent sucked a big one. For those of you who don't know it was pulled pork sandwiches all day on friday with no sauce, served with plain white rice and beans, Saterday was soggy tots & hamburgers. The last day was roaste beef and cheep shrimp served with beans and cream of corn.
Ok I went VIP with my brother and we are pretty much "chefs". So the both of us were very disapointed in the service of the food. It is Tenn. What about a good old pig roaste, bbq, or something fresh off the grill? How about some fresh fruit and snacks (besides bags of chips). There was no food served untill after noon (when all the shows were already going) and the line was an hour long just to get the food. It was a very big dissapointment and I am very glad that I brought a whole ton of our own food to eat.
gimmicks + live music = entertainign show to me gimmicks + tracks playing = not so entertaining to me.
again im not trying to rain on anyones parade. all of my friends went to beck and had a great time. just thought its wrong to call someone an idiot for saying they didnt get into the non live music part of the show is all. but whatever man your like talking to a wall sometimes. im sure i can be too. thanx for all the live shows in mp3 format though man!
Aziz Ansari (the comedian) was a letdown for me. He had a couple of good bits, but that was it. The only great part about it was the people I was with, made it fun.
