I can understand the letdown for Superjam coming from those who are not really into Phish, since that is basically who it was devised for. I f'ing loved it, but to each his own...
As far as music went, I left fully satisfied. Nothing was really disappointing, but I was somewhat dissatisfied with a few things.
Lack of a playground - I read here that it was a mulch issue... RV-only areas should be further away from the entrances - let those who rough it get a little closer. That or charge more for passes and keep GA prices down. That damn backstage/vip floodlight during Radiohead was extremely distracting (the one off to the left)
I had some issues with fellow attendees, but not much AC/Superfly can do about that...
I'd have to say Oysterhead. Les was awesome as usual but Trey just didn't seem to have it, not like he did at Superjam, not even close. Rusted Root also just sounded uninspired. I thought Deadboy was very mediocre. This is all kinda pointless though, cause all the amazing sets I saw far outweigh any disappointments.
i skipped him for mmw but anyways, lets get a show of hands. \
who came to see beck sing/perform live music??
who came to see beck in a bear suit with a track playing?
give me a bear suit and a beck cd and ill take your money man.
Since you skipped Beck for MMW, you really have no way to compare.
well i mostly just hought it was wrong that the original guy who said he didnt like the not performing live music part was promptly called an idiot. thats why i said what i said. me personally i think that the music is the entertainment. i dont need to watch dolls or bears perform to tracks. good live music is what i wanna see. but if thats your thing awesome. im glad it was enjoyable. for me i know i made the correct choice in seeing mmw. but i dont think anyone is an idiot or a whiner for saying they wanted to see him perform live music and not put on a play.

Beck was my biggest disappointment. Sorry, but if he doesn't want to play Loser, then don't freaking play it. Playing a studio recording is totally pathetic.
And for the most part, he seemed to be lacking energy. That's my biggest beef with his set.
well how can you say that someone is an idiot for saying he didnt play live music and then you go on to mention the spots that he didnt play live music? if radiohead sat down and ate dinner and put on suits and played karma police off of a track there would have been riots. maybe you can say that you enjoyed the skits or whatever but to call someonelse an idiot for being upset about missing 4 great shows to hear loser off a cd is just moronic. noones saying that he didnt play any live music. just that there was some nonsense thrown in there. i guess somepeople like it and others just wanna hear great music performed live. if your going to play a song play it. if your sick of playing it dont play it. dont go out there and just pop in a cd. thats very lame imo. but to each their own. bonnaroo is all about good live music. not silly gimmicks.

the bindlestiff family circus was laaaaame. we stayed for like 20 minutes and were sooo dissapointed. then on the way back to superjam i was like "yea alright they should have some more people out at superjam by now" and i got there and it was teh same band. it rocked, no doubt, but i wanted some more musicians to cycle thru
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

^^scientology is just as crazy as any other religion
People are complaining about the puppets playing loser but did you notice that the crowd lost it when he did that. everyone was dancing probably the only time during the set. i've seen beck do this before so i refrained from dancing because i know that he only does it b/c he thinks that that is what people want to hear from him. I for one think that if an artist doesn't want to play a song they shouldn't freakin play it. but if the whole audience goes nuts maybe beck is right in doing it.
i wonder if he felt like a sideshow attraction (given the new-wave, cool haircut people (inappreciative pricks) around me that were completely ignoring him) that was there to warm us up for radiohead. I've seen beck sets that are incredible and this definately wasn't one of them.
i have never seen him and im glad this wasnt my first time. especially since mmw killed it. i didnt know much about live beck. the 2 different personas was unknown to me. i will definetly plan on trying to see him for the first time when he is in party mode.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned moe yet in the thread. My Sunday schedule was Brothers Past > Soulive > Bela Fleck > bit of Matisyahu and Atmosphere > moe > Lesh, and of all those performers moe was the only one I was left feeling flat both during and after.
Soulive on the other hand, DAMN i hope there is a torrent out there

I actually managed to go the entire weekend without seeing one show that wasn't above good. That also probably has to do with the fact that most shows I saw I already knew were going to be great.
The Flaming Lips and Phish say hello. And you CAN combine the two - it's called "showmanship". And weren't you the same person who, in one thread, was talking about how "it just wasn't YEM if Trey and Mike weren't jumping on trampolines" in response to someones assertation that the Duo (or GRAB, or whoever) had been playing YEM?? I'm pretty sure it was - and they were a band (Phish) that had LOADS of silly gimmicks (tramps, chess games, big ball jams, secret signals, you name it) yet also had a killer show. But you're right, that wouldn't be welcome at Bonnaroo.
and i dont think its bad all of the time. but i would argue that an hour and a half set at bonnaroo probably isnt the best place for it. but again, to each their own
to respond to the whole sceintology thing, i think all should know that if Beck is infact a devout Scientologist (which being born and raised under the church of L Ron, I'd imagen he is) then he thoroughly beleives that TOM CRUISE CAN FLY. The more i read about Scientology the more it becomes abundantly clear it was pulled out of the Arse of a cheesey 1950's SCi Fi writer. Emperor Xenu help you Beck!
i dont think its any sillier then the millions of americans worshipping the magic guy in the sky. all religions scare me. unless you consider roo a religon. which i am starting to.
when did this thread become an argument about scientology?
My friend really dug the Beck set, but he's a big theatrics type of person, so that set was right up his alley... I hung out at MMW and was totally blown away... Billy had it going ON!
I wasn't at 'roo so I didn't see Beck but I don't see how you could possibly compare a recording playing with a puppet dancing to Phish jumping on trampolines during YEM. The band is actually still playing the song live while jumping on the trampolines. Unless I'm mistaken I'm under the impression that Beck was resting, not actually playing the song. If I'm wrong then my bad, but actually performing live while jumping on a trampoline is different than a recording playing.
