i've seen them 3 times. the first at Lollapalooza -- it was good but too short. the second at VA Tech ---- by far the best. the music never stopped once in 4 hours. they even changed drummers to keep the beat fresh. horn section was awesome. guitars were loud. sing-along after aing-along... George was the leader of an incredible musical party!! the funk flowed that night. i saw them again at Radford U. ---- and it was good too but didnt quite match that second show. i think that George & the P-funk would open some eyes for people who haven't yet experienced the true FUNK!
No I have never seen them. Maybe my I would change my mind if I did. I just remember wondering upon a few of really negative reviews in the last few years. But hey, what do critics know!!!! If they were to get added I would make it a point to give them a listen, that what Roo is all about.

For the LONGEST time now, people have been asking for the PFUNK, and George Clinton to be at Bonnaroo...but honestly....HE"S A WASHED UP DRUG ADDICT who know longer can spread good vibes. Just seen him at Streeters in TRAVERSE CITY MICHIGAN. Not only was the band, slow off key, and not with it.....George Clinton did more "Hey YAH" then singing!
After the show, we (Me and two girls) got to go backstage, where I swear.......The two girls got hit on by forty year old black guys (girls are young 20's) and hit on, I mean..swarmed! and George just sat in a corner, smoking CRACK...YES CRACK...from a broken crack pipe. My friend EMily took a picture with her camera phone, but used no flash, (not to get kicked out) It didn't come out real well (we can't sell it) but I can tell.
George is washed up, and no good for Bonnaroo! Trust ME!!!!
I have seen some fantastic P funk shows over the years ,seen um at least a dozen times, Some were definetly better than others, I have friends in the music biz who have picked him up at the airport and drove him to hotels ,shows etc. And yes he is a major crack smoker but i try not to discriminate. I smoked a fatty with him and his crew in Pontiac Michigan outside there tour bus,I even saw humpty hump with clinton once I like the guy one thing I found was that the crowd played a part in the show if he doesnt feel it it from the crowd it wont be agood show If the crowd is gettin into it tour in for a helluva night

Yea, he smokes crack. But it's P-FUNK people! On their WORST day they will still be the greatest party band EVER. And they NEED to be at bonnaroo -- I still don't understand why it hasn't happened yet. They're playing some festivals this summer - it's not out of the question (I hope).
I was SO STOKED on seeing Clinton w/ P-Funk in Miami after Phish in 2003. First their sit-in with Phish DID NOT BRING THE FUNK. They brought psychedelic rock and some slightly humorous antics to the stage with Phish but did NOT funk it up AT ALL. Then my friends and I went to their after show, which totally sucked. The band was big and kind of messy then Clinton finally showed up about two hours into the show. He just riffed on some interminably long, crack induced, intergalactic mothership nonsense of the rest of the night. It was just completely incoherent gibberish and my friends and I were just laughing to each other about it. I wish I had seen them when they were good. I would never pay to see them again and they certainly do not belong at Bonnaroo.
I just wanted them to be as good as they were in PCU.
I've never seen any form of P-funk, but am a huge fan of the 70's album work. It is some of the deepest, most profound, innovative, influential music of the 20th century imo, and George Clinton's contribution to it (which had more to do with managing the overall philosophy, production, vibe and logistics of Parliament and Funkadelic than actually playing or singing) is nothing short of genius. The studio output has pretty much sucked for 25 years, and I believe Clinton is the only person still in the group from that time (plenty of them are dead, Bernie and Bootsy have moved on to bigger and better things). I would check them out if the oppurtunity came up, and would love to see them on the Bonnaroo lineup, but I haven't gone out of my way to get to a show when they've been in town. From opinions I've heard, their show is pretty hit or miss these days. For the record, George Clinton never did a whole lot of singing (or playing) except for the really early vocal group stuff from the late sixties (the first version of Parliament), so there's no reason to expect him to now.
It would be fun as hell to see P-funk at Roo, but if you ask me you can see the up-to-date musical and creative legacy of the incredible P-funk output of the seventies at the Lyrics Born and Blackalicious shows.

Bernie still plays w/ the All-Stars on occassion. Some of the guit players are from the old days, and some of the horn guys (obviously not Eddie Hazel or Fred Wesley).
I don't want to split hairs w/ you, jtr, but P-Funk has ALWAYS been about being messy and spouting gibberish (if you want to characterize it in that way). They are not a polished band - they bring muddy, dirty, nasty funk. Hence Clinton's quote, "Everything good is nasty."
Late night Clinton & P-Funk @ 'roo would be the most off-the-hook party in the country. Confirmed.
The P-Funk are playing in SF in a couple a weeks and I'm torn about going. I've seen them before and they definitely brought the funk. It's just that the show is $40 and I don't know if I want to spend $40 on a hit or miss show. I think I'll just check out the Greyboy Allstars who play the night before.
Hopefully I just caught them on an off night. I was pretty disappointed.
"They are not a polished band - they bring muddy, dirty, nasty funk."
In response to this, I would say that much funk out of New Orleans is not polished, but rather muddy, dirty and nasty, yet it is not "sloppy." The sloppiness is what I didn't much care for at the P-Funk show I saw.

I would definitely go to Greyboy Samhall... you will not, I repeat, will not be disappointed
That being said... I was really hoping for a Greyboy Saturday late-night set but since Walters is playing in Chattanooga (see earlier post: bonnaroo.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=music&action=display&thread=1145653181) I really doubt we'll see Greyboy... and then I immediately started thinking about P-Funk... whom I would love to see at Roo and like you Samhall, I probably would not spend 40 bucks to see P-funk anywhere unless it was a sickass venue and I was going with a good group of friends.
Anyways, we need some late-night Saturday funk and I really don't think MMW is gonna be the "jamband" late night although it's possible that they could be
