Last weekend I got to check these guys out at the Bowery Ballroom here in NYC. Honestly, I wasn't expecting too much going in. I love their album, but I had heard that their live show wasn't much. I also had seen them on Conan and the lead singer seemed to intentionally yelp and screech even more than on the CD...almost like he was trying to be annoying.
Apparently it was their last show on their North American tour, and they seemed to be really happy to be playing to the hometown crowd. It was a loose, fun, high-energy show. I wasn't going to see them at Roo after catching this show, but now I will definitely see them unless they are up against a big name I've haven't seen, like Beck.
Here's what they played: * Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away * In This Home on Ice * Graceful Retreat * Is This Love? * The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth * Details of the War * Gimmie Some Salt * Wet Dynamite * Over and Over Again (Lost and Found) * Cigarettes * Satan Said Dance * Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood * Encore: Clap Your Hands * Me & You, Watson * Heavy Metal * Helpless (Neil Young cover)
Cool Goddess was an awesome way to start. And yes, they played that cheesy first song on the CD, but it was the perfect song to kick off the encore.
Scott McMicken from Dr. Dog was the first opener, and he and 2 other guys (maybe from the other opener The Teeth? Dunno, got there late and didn't see them) came out to play with them on Helpless.
They did a great job bringing the lush, layered sound of the CD to the stage. Highlights: In This Home On Ice, Gimmie Some Salt (funkier; the jagged guitar stabs were really powerful), Satan Said Dance, one of the new songs (Cigarettes? mid-tempo, softly strumming lead guitar), and Upon This Tidal Wave Of Young Blood, which got everybody dancing.
So they may not be some people's cup of tea, but I would recommend catching them if you can!

damn i meant to put in there that he really toned down the annoying singing that night. not nearly as bad as on conan. hopefully it's not that bad at roo. maybe the drunker he gets the better he sings, cause he seemed pretty liquored up.
yeah i know that satan said dance and me and you, watson are older songs that they didn't put on the cd. don't know bout the rest, but judging by the blog reactions, they seem to be new songs.
Love their music, but I don't understand why the singer incorporates vocal cracks and atonality as a central aspect of his singing. It kinda ruins them live IMO.

actually i like it. i like everything especially the vocals. i think it sets them apart from different bands, its unique, and for some reaosn ti doesn't get on my nerves. it gets on a lot of my friends nerves but i liek it. they're playing in williamstown MA on thursday so i get to see them there. yay
They're not amazing live. They aren't bad. The lead singer definitely gives off the "I'm a prick" vibe which makes me wonder how long the band lasts. Everyone else in the band seems to be having a good time. The show I went to was the last night of their tour with The National, and the band came out for a superjam with The National at the end which was pretty fun. Felt a lot like what you here described about the old Factory days in Manchester. The lead singer of CYHSY did not participate...
If you don't get the voice thing, I might venture a guess that you haven't listened to a lot of post punk music. I dig the vocals live and in the studio. They might be a little gimmicky at first, but it's right for where they are now, and I'm sure it'll tone down a little once they get more comfortable in their sound.
I've seen these guys about 4 or 5 times in the last year...the first time was at the khyber in philadelphia last summer...I thought that was an awesome show...but part of that was probably due to the fact that it was in a tiny place and the crowd was well into it...though, that was the first time i heard satan said dance and it blew me away...so much fun. anyway, i also saw them at the tla back in november and that show didn't do it for me...still good, but not great...anyway, I was also at the saturday bowery show and these guys have come a loongg way since the national tour...the band is tight and they've loosene up a bit....before this last show, i wasn't sure how they would do at bonnaroo...but as they had everyone up on stage for helpless I realized that I think people will really enjoy them at bonnaroo
Also, i don't think the lead singer is a prick...i think he is uncomfortable with being the frontman...and so the other guys do the talking...kind of like the shins...i spoke with him for a bit back at one of the khyber shows for a bit about neil young...and he just seemed kind of taken aback by their overnight success...also, at the bowery show...he and a few of the other band members were hanging out at the bar after the show, and while i didn't talk to him, he seemed to be fine with fans coming up to chat and what not...of course what do i know he could be a grade A prick

i saw them at willimas college on thursday and though the crowd sucked (your typical drun college guys) cyhsy put on one hell of a show. they had very veyr highh energy and they really really impressed me. it was an awesome show for fifteen bucks because after cyhsy robert randolph played a three hour set that blew my mind
i just watched the conan video and i must say it is terrible. BUT i also saw them in NYC and thought they put on a phenomenal show. they had so much more energy and really looked like they were having fun, unlike in the conan clip. i'm definitely going to see them at roo. if they could gather energy from the fans in a small venue in new york to put on a great show, i can only imagine how much fun their show will be in a great big farm with thousands of people.
