I have been a huge stripes fan for years and years and years...but I am going to say that even though I can only think of 1 other rock n roll band that can jam/improvise better (brian jonestown massacre) I really really doubt that White Stripes would be interested in playing this fest.
I don't think they would be a really good fit...any one checked out the Coke commercial that Jack wrote the ditty for? It's pretty cool I guess.
Brian Jonestown Massacre have to improvise well when their members keep getting into fistfights mid-jam and their singers are busy kicking fans; And hey, I like BJM- but the best improv/jam? Nope. White Stripes? One of them is good at it, the other is horrific; Give me Janet Weiss if you're looking for a tough-kickass drummer who used to be married to a lead singer.

i have always wanted them to be added. not as a headliner, but a late night show would be insane.
white stripes haters often miss the point of the white stripes. the drums are not supposed to be great. meg provides the purest, rawest backbone for the guitar and vocals. she plays hard, and i suspect that's what she's best at.
and i agree that they are one of the best improvising bands i've ever seen. if you guys don't catch them before jack gets bored with the concept, you are missing out on one of the fiercest rock shows ever to roam this planet. i'm sure they sketch it out a little beforehand, but they play for over 2 hours without a setlist. jack basically skips from song to song (and often back to a song they already started) and meg keeps up extremely well.

well like i said i like them but of course she can keep up.. theres not much to what she is doing. jack carries the stripes and yes he can jam. bu tto say that they are one of the greatest imporv bands of all time is stretching it. alot. again jack is bad ass but i dont think meg coupld imprvise her way out of a paper bag. and i would catch them fast beause i think he is already bored of it and wants to surrond himself with more talent. just my opinion.. thats the beautiful thing about improvisation. there are as many opinions about it as their are people listening to it

nobody said "that they are one of the greatest improv bands of all time."
when i saw them at the ballpark in coney island they did the coolest thing i've ever seen at a concert. after they came out, jack played a quick lick on his guitar, let the feedback go, grabbed a polaroid camera and took pictures of himself and meg, throwing them into the crowd as he went. i would love to see how they turned out.

ya somebody did say that. thats what we are talking about.
and that does sound sweet with the pics. wonder what you could get on ebay for one of those. but its hardly improv.

I went to any Umphrey's show where they did a similar thing with pictures. During a drum solo a few of the guys were taking people's cameras from the front row and taking pics of themselves and the other guys in the band and then handing them back to the owners. I bet some people got some classic pics from that show. Just to stay on topic I'll say that it sounds crazy to me also to consider the white stripes as top improvisors.

Ummmm The White Stripes as the #2 improv rock band????
Does that sound ludacris to anyone else but me??? No offense or anything i like the White Stripes but come on....
well It is an opinion but have you spent much time listening to the live shows? I have probably 50 live shows from the band and I am sticking to this comment I made.
Last time they toured Europe they handed out cdr's to each person attending the show. Each show they played The Denial Twist a different way. Thats 1 song about 12 completely different ways, different instruments, different style of playing.
This is not a ludacris thought at all and can be backed up.
BTW, I mean rock n roll, not jam or anything like that. I am not comparing them to bands like umprheys or RRFB. It's all rock but I am thinking of this as a smaller rock n roll scene.

This has nothing to do with the drumming. Meg plays a very basic drum. It is what it is. Jack doesnt need fancy drumming. and yes there are at least 50,000 better drummers, Meg will admit that.

clear channel has the patent on distributing live music after a concert. they better watch out or they might get on their ass!
i listen to lots of improvisational music and i dont think medeski martin and wood would be nearly as good if medeski was playing at a college halftime show level. but i havent listened to the white stripes live stuff so i will shut up.

I think you gotta make a distinction between improvising and jamming, they really aren't the same thing. And I agree, the White Stripes are one of the top improvising bands out there, the more of their live stuff you listen to, the more you realize it.
I didn't see your question until now Ka, but I suppose a number of distinctions can be made. More often than not jamming connotates improvising a song, or artifically extending a song. "Jamming" refers more to an artist, or artists working together, with a limited conception of the next series of notes they will play. Essentially they're making the notes up on the spot. Whereas improvising can imply using instruments unconventional to the song, using instruments in an unconventional manner, using non-instruments as instrument, etc. Furthermore, Improvising doesn't necesarrily require that an artist deviate from the normal structure of a song. An artist can be completly aware of what song he's going to play, and how its going to sound, its just a matter of improvising how he's going to play it. None of this is to say that they are mutually exclusive, often times jamming calls on one to improvise. But a person can but good at jamming but not good at improvising, and vice versa.
Back to the point . . .The Raconteurs continue to add a bunch of festival dates. Most of the slots they've got listed are for Europe, staring a few days after bonnaroo. They play a US show in June 7th and then I believe start European festivals the 21st. Not out of the realm of possibility . . .
to beat a dead horse - ive never seen the white stripes, but i cant imagine how there could be a better jam (improvisational) rock band out there than built to spill. Especially with the three-prong guitar lineup they have now. They will jam your face into oblivion with some of the hugest and most epic riffage you could imagine.
i think they are a good band, and would like to see them live, but i dont want to see them added this year. i am a jam fan, and there should be a big name jam band added for the finale. nothing absoultely ridiculous, but id like to see some mule or ben harper... ;D

Its not something you can imagine. You just need to see Jack White go to town. It's all improvised. They gave up set lists years ago...he just starts playing what he wants how he wants. Really good stuff.
