YES. YES. And YES. I completely agree....if any band is overrated it is Nirvana.
Nirvana is actually one of the worst bands from the grunge scene. >.< They had a couple good songs, but not many. Give me Pixies! Give me Sonic Youth! Give me Jesus Lizard! Just spare me of another Kurt Cobain sob song.
I think you guys are missing the whole idea of Nirvana (and perhaps grunge in general.) Like, say, the Ramones it isn't about the standard definition of talent. Excluding Dave Grohl, there isn't a whole lot of musical "talent" in Nirvana. However they (like The Ramones) pioneered not only a new style of music, but a whole new attitude. Coming out of the 80s was glam bands and hair bands where being a rock star meant you were some god among people. Kurt Cobain was living on the streets when Nevermind (or maybe it was Bleach) came out. Listen to music before Nirvana and then after Nirvana and with the help of Guns N' Roses, they made it happen. Nirvana took angst and made it poetic, creating a mix of fierce almost violent sounds and making it sound melodic. Cobain was an amazing song writer who changed the whole culture of music.
Sorry for the rant, i just really like Nirvana haha.
I like Nirvana as much as the next guy; however, they were pretty obviously quite lucky as well. Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves at just the right time. I mean that might have been what ignited the explosion in the early 90's, but it wasn't like the explosion wasn't inevitable.
If it wasn't Nirvana, it would have been Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins, or any of the other huge up and coming bands. Just look at most of the music that hit the scene almost simultaneously as Nirvana.

Timing was, of course, a large part of Nirvana's success. But if you ask anyone in the music industry, timing can be one of, if not the largest factor in making a hit. Do you think Pearl Jam would have been successful 30 years ago? I doubt it. Would The Beatles be very popular if they came out now? Probably not. Such a huge part of music is timing, and Carpe'ing the Dium (ceasing the day in my latin/english hyrbrid.) Nirvana, while definately lucky, was a truly grounbreaking band. Im not really sure if any other of the bands would have made the same influence they did. They would have likely come out with grunge-on-the-pop side album, and when that became popular turn more into a Blind Melon/Third Eye Blind/other 90s pop band(which i love). It always takes a badn that is over the top in its influences to full change the musical culture.

But, see, while Nirvana might have brought grunge to the limelight of the American music scene.... nothing they did was groundbreaking or new. Even Kurt Cobain himself admitted that he wanted Nevermind to sound like Doolittle by The Pixies (and he succeeded. It sounded like a watered down version of Doolittle. Nirvana replaced the 'David Lynchian' Pixies lyrics with teenage angst and Frank Black's extraordinary vocals with Kurt Cobain's constant mumbling).
I'll admit that Nirvana pretty much beheaded all remaining 80s hair metal bands, but that's. about. it. It was bound to happen anyway. Nirvana was just in the right place at the right time with a legion of angsty teenagers willing to praise them as their saviors. But, of course, to each their own. Take no offense. Just voicing my opinion.
PS: To the person who said Smashing Pumpkins? Hell yes. Even if Billy Corgan is an not a very nice person, the Smashing Pumpkins have to be in the discussion. =P So should Jane's Addiction.

I think you Nirvana nay-sayers are looking at cobain from completely the wrong perspective, if it wasn't for nirvana none of those afformentioned bands would even had major label record contracts. Before Nirvana albums like doolittle were stuck in the back of the record store, if they were in the store at all. Nevermind might sound poppy and cliche today, but as far as the average teen was concerned it was a completely new sound.
I don't know about you guys, but to me Nevermind and In Utero are two albums that stack up to anything released by the Stones, Beatles, Zepplin, etc...
Damnit, I haven't visited this board in a few days, and then I see the PJ thread has like 3 or 4 new pages I haven't seen. So, I was like, bad ass! Maybe...maaaaybe they've been added?
But, no. It's the INEVITABLE Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam debate. Man, that argument never gets old.
DAMNIT!

That's not entirely true. Take a look at Gish by The Smashing Pumpkins. It released before Nevermind. It's been said by a couple people, that Butch Vig applied a lot of what he did with the Pumpkins on Gish to Nevermind. Most of those bands were already signed and on their way to becoming extremely popular.

Im sorry you all but go do some research on Nirvana. Bleach came out in 1989!!!!!!!!!. Now I dare you all to say Bleach was not a good album and it was put out in the 80's. They were doing it 3 years before Nevermind so they didnt just pop up at the same time. Soundgarden had been arund for a while and was on the same label and Nirvana but didnt get big untill Nirvana paved the way. If Nirvana was a band with no musical talent and had a singer who couldnt sing then why doesn't everyone who dont like Nirvana make a group and do something as great as them to prove anyone can do it. I wasnt going to express my views on PJ untill Nirvana started gettin dragged through the mud. I think Nirvana, G & R, Alice in chains, and STP were all better bands. If you like jam music more then your probably going to like PJ more, but if you like punk and some harder stuff then Nirvana is your group probably. So for all you who never listened to Black Flag and The Melvins, quit trying to belittle Nirvana. Im sorry for sounding angry but come on people they wouldnt constantly be recognized as one of the top 5 bands of all time by every magazine and tv show if they didnt have some talent. And like I said, if its so easy to do go do it. And as for the comment saying nothing they did was new or groundbreaking......why did they take off and start the whole grunge ball rolling. They must have done somethin new. Just remember, they had music before Nevermind if you didnt know. Kurt said it best at Unplugged...."This song is off our first album, most people dont own it."
P.S. How can anyone not like their unplugged album, even if you dont like their other stuff. They were the only band to ever sit down and do an unplugged without messing up and doing some songs over. Thats saying something, hell it took Neil Young multiple times to get his right.

I accept your dare.
Bleach was not a good album.
do I win something now?
seriously, Nirvana was definatly groundbreaking, no doubt, but to mark them in the top 5 all time greatest rock acts? that's stretching it a tad, IMO. Do you know how to play guitar? I pretty much learned almost every Nirvana song thier was when I first started playing guitar... now, does that mean the songs were terrible, or that Kurt Cobain wasn't a talented lyric writer? not at all, but it does mean that thier songs were so ridiculously easy to play that a 13 year old kid who had never touched a guitar before could learn most of them over the course of a few weeks after learning basic chords.
Good songs? yes. Good lyrics? Yes. One of the top 5 greatest rock bands of all time? no.

haha, I had a chuckle when I read you accepted the dare. It took me a sec to remember what I wrote and when I did I started laughing. I think someone earlier said this debate will go on forever and it will. It's a good one though with good points on both sides so its fun. I have friends who tell me I suck and PJ is better and I have one friend who says I'm stupid because Soundgarden was better buts that a whole other discusion. And no, I can't play guitar but I do play a lil bass. The first songs I learned were Incubus and Nirvana. But they do have some songs that are really good I think musicaly like Aneurysm and Blew......and oh yea, I saw someone say they woulda sold out. WHAT? Did you hear "You Know Your Right?" I thought it was really good but Im really biased too lol. Ima quit rambling now....I just love this debate. Less than a month till ROOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah, this debate is one that will go on forever.. it's all subjective, anyway... what's one man trash is another's treasure and so forth..
But I do like Nirvana. alot. They shaped my adolecence, as they did for alot of other people (hence my determination to learn most of their songs on the guitar ). I just don't necessarily (sp?) put them in the top 5 all time greatest.
They make my top 20, no doubt.
EDIT: and I figured you'd get a laugh out of my acceptance of the dare

Anyone going to the Sat/Sun shows in Camden?..
Going Saturday and i'm super pumped 'cause The Jacket is opening too. Quite possibly the best double bill i've ever seen next to The Who with Robert Plant opening...

so how was the detroit show last night?
The Pearl Jam show was actually pretty darn good. They played a good mix of old and new songs but it seems like they definately were more focused on their old stuff. They played two encores that I know about (I left after Do the Evolution in the second encore but they were still playing) and the encores definitely focused on their older stuff as well. This was the largest concert (not a festival) that I have been to in quite some time and the last one I went to was Neil Diamond so it was pretty cool IMO to see an entire arena get rocked much harder that I was expecting.
I missed the first half of MMJ... they continue their streak of always coming on right on time and screwing up my notion that rock stars are never punctual (I missed them entirely when they opened for Wilco last summer because they must have actually came out at 7:00 and started playing as soon as the gates opened). But the 10 or 15 minutes that I did see of MMJ was damn good as well and everytime I see them, I just get more psyched about the idea of them having one of the late night sets at Bonnaroo!
I think the one thing that would have made the MMJ/Pearl Jam experience that much better would have been if Jim James came out and played with PJ during Jeremy, Even Flow, or Alive. Other than that, no complaints from me.
I think an artist in residence announcement or Superjam surprise could still happen, but it looks like Superfly will have to continue trying for Pearl Jam at other events.
I'm still holding out hope that the reason Tom Petty got a 3 1/2 hour slot (as opposed to Radiohead and PL, which both got 2 1/12) is that Pearl Jam will be there. I love Tom Petty, but 3 1/2 hours might be a tad long for a sixty-year old.
Post by ronburgandy? on May 23, 2006 14:11:43 GMT -5
VERY unlikely now..although the 3 1/2 hour time slot is a bit fishy..i cant see them announcing a new artist after the schedule (has that ever happened before?).
i think petty has big plans. it his 30 year anniversary tour and there was an article posted on here a while ago where he talked about how he wanted to do stuff from everyalbum and really represent the whole tom petty experience. plus i am expectign lots of sit ins. especially trey. im pretty sure we are going to get a trey and tom last dance with maryjane... i cant fricking wait!!!!!
