alone in a 4-man tent (my g/f luckily understands that 'roo is my once-a-year get-down crazy time retreat w/ my boyz), on a queen size air mattress, with a sheet (at most), normally w/ a fan running and a wee radio playing Coast to Coast (normally on @ the wee hours).
would you recommend bringing something like an air matress to sleep on or could you do without it
I used to bring an aluminum cot, but an air mattress is a good idea too. Just bring a sheet and maybe a blanket if it gets too cold for you. A sleeping bag is definitely too hot for that time of year.
Your days will be a lot more fun if you're not stiff in the mornings from sleeping right on the ground (now morning wood stiffness is a completely different matter...)

I COULD sleep w/o an air mattress. I mean, I COULD sleep without a tent. But I definitely CHOOSE an air mattress b/c my back feels better in the morning, and otherwise I'm basically sleeping on uneven grass with a piece of plastic on top of it. I got a new one this year from Wally's - $23 Coleman queen size. You can get a battery-powered pump for like $13 that will fill it up in a few minutes and is very quiet (luckily my buddy already has one of these).

Haha that's funny, last weekend I did the same thing in a hotel room, but there were 2 people helping me. About half an hour later someone had poked a hole in it and I was sleeping on the floor again. F#@%!!!!!!
Last year I used a queen size air mattress and it seemed all right, there were 2 of us on it and we did not think it was that great. The year before we just brought a sleeping back and a blanket and slept on that, and it was fine. This year we got 1 cot so far and am looking for another one. I may use the air mattress and let my roomate use the cot, he thinks the cot will work better.....all you need at night to cover up is a light blanket or a sheet...it is hot and even hotter in the AM

I use a Thermarest, much lighter and easy to pack that a big full size matress, check em out they're pretty comfy and self inflating... I usually end up sleeping on top of my sleeping bag...
I don't know for a fact that it would be comfortable (although I would think it would be nore comfortable that a 1 inch thick camping mat), but it is cheap and the perfect size for a tent that doesn't allow the luxury of queen sized air mattress like some of you are using.
