So I turn 21 a week before Roo this year and I was planning on getting a straight edge tattoo on my back to commemorate. The thing is, I don't know how well that'll work if it is going to be baking in the Tennessee sun a week later. Anyone more experienced have any insight or advice?
As long as you put suntan lotion on it, it should be fine. I would ask your local tattoo artist. Sunlight does fade tattoos and most tattoo artist recommend that you keep tattoos out of the sun until it heals.
Having had three tattoos on my back, I'd postpone till after roo. Your prone to get it infected, seeing that you won't be able to keep all that clean. Also if its on your back, sleeping could be a bitch, due to discomfort. Now, if its just a small tattoo and it will be healed, thats a different story....

I would worry more about it getting dirty or infected. You need to keep it pretty clean while it is healing and if you aren't going to take really good care of it while you are there, maybe think about doing it when you get back.
It will be hot, sweaty, dirty, dusty, possibly muddy and all around breeding grounds for infection. Maybe make the appointment and get the art done on your birthday and then when you come back you can go and get the actual tat done.
If you are getting it somewhere that you can keep a really good eye on it and you are really meticulous with it, then maybe, but I would hate to see you end up with a nasty infection to remember Bonnaroo and your 21st Birthday by. I know I sound like a mom but you don't want to get sick and not see everything that you wanted to because you feel like crap. I hope you have a great birthday!
Me and my brother were talking to each other 'Bout what makes a man a man Was it brain or brawn, or the month you were born We just couldn't understand
Our old man didn't like our appearance He said that only women wear long hair
So me and my brother borrowed money from Mother We knew what we had to do We went downstairs, past the barber and gymnasium And got our arms tattooed
Welcome to my life, tattoo I'm a man now, thanks to you I expect I'll regret you But the skin graft man won't get you You'll be there when I die Tattooooooo
My dad beat me 'cause mine said "Mother" But my mother naturally liked it and beat my brother 'Cause his tattoo was of a lady in the nude And my mother thought that was extremely rude
Welcome to my life, tattoo We've a long time together, me and you I expect I'll regret you But the skin graft man won't get you You'll be there when I die Tattooooooo
Now I'm older, I'm tattooed all over My wife is tattooed too A rooty-toot-toot, rooty-tooty-toot-toot Rooty-toot-toot tattoo too To you

I would get it earlier so you don't have to worry so much about the peeling of the tattoo, plus the scabbing and the lotions and the blah blah blah. Give it enough time to heal and THEN get toasted in the sun.
let it have at least a week if not two to heal before roo, shen keep it out of the sun, usually the rest of the scabbing is very minimal after the first week, but a sun burn on a fresh tattoo could easily make it scar and be 3D in some places, a 3D tattoo on your back is hard to blend in with skin texture, unless your back is fat
I'm quite the tattoo aficianado...And let me just tell you to wait until after Roo to get inked. It'll definately fade (a lot) if it's new and you have your shirt off, and it'll be tough to keep it clean too. Don't want one of those things getting infected. A tattoo doesn't completely heal until about 9 months later, and summer is the absolute worst time to get one. If at all possible, I would reccommend holding off on the ink until the fall.

I made a seperate post on this topic, If I get my press credentials this year one of the mags I'll be shooting for is Crave Tattoo and Piercing "The Tattoos of Bonnaroo"
Feel free to voluteer to have your photo made. We'll try to pick a place and time.
playing angels advocate for the first time ever, but think about reconsidering the ink all together, at least 10 years your thinking and outlook changes, have you ever seen a 30 year old tattoo that looks good, and matches the person, and where they are currently at in life? at least you are thinking about putting your back instead of somewhere public, but as you change so will your taste.I am one of the very few people in my age group i know with no ink, and that sad fact makes no ink nuttier than tattoos, which are now sported by more chix, then men, thanx to the popularity of the tramp stamp.
I'd considered what you'd said before augustwest, but the ink I am getting is A) on my back so i don't have to look at it when I get old and B) combines my clean life-style and religion into one tattoo, and I think those are the two things there is little chance of me giving up.

direct sun exposure will fade any brand new ink. esp. any coloring. colored ink fades in the sun during the first weeks of healing. A n D onitment, 20 spf or stronger lotion without perfumes or other colorings added to it.
This is funny. . . When I got my first tattoo, the next day I went to Jamaica for two weeks. The two worst things you could do to a new tat is direct sunlight, and saltwater. Well lets just say that I didn't stay inside for the two weeks. Actually quite the contrary, I was out in the water for hours everyday. By the end of the trip most of the ink had bled out of the tat( which is on my shin, and raps around my calf completely.) and I had to wait till it all healed over and had to get it redone. Luckily, it turned out beautifully still. But it was a huge pain having to get it redone. My suggestion to you is, Being that this is going to be something that you have for the rest of your life, and having the slightest chance of it getting messed up at Roo, I would just wait one more week before getting it done. Or just get it done a couple weeks before. Also, Don't worry about wishing you never got it, I have three rather large tats, and they all signify my faith and beliefs, and i know that if you are compassionate in what you believe, then your tattoo will be more than ink in your back, it will be a constant reminder of who you are.
