More specifically, the type of people that go to roo. This will be my first time, I've been wanting to go for a few years, but previous obligations have prevented it. Anyway, I was just wondering what kind of people are usually at roo. I ask because I just got out of the Marine Corps, and have more than a few tattoos identifying me as such. Nothing short of a full body suit would conceal them all - obviously not something well suited for the Tennessee summer heat. Getting back on topic, I ask what kind of people go to roo because I'd hate for my good time to be soured by some asshole calling me a babykiller or a murderer or something like that. I'm a laid back guy, but things like that set me off. Can any of the more roo savvy folks here shed some light on whether or not I might run into this kind of thing?

dude, you should be fine. Its mostly just people trying to have a good time and see some great bands. its a pretty open minded vibe, at least it was in 04. this years crowd may be a little different than years past though.

You might get some comments - but no one will have the balls to back anything up. The crowd is definitley diverse and very chill - will probably be more diverse this year. There is a stupid political anti-Bush vibe that resonates there normally - just know that in advance. I don't care for Bush, but I'm not trying to think or talk politics while I'm @ Roo. Most people I think would agree w/ me, but there are self-righteous people everywhere you go.
I heard some stuck-up a$$ argue with this older dude from Tennessee for like 30 minutes - cutting him off, criticizing where he got his news from, just generally ruining the vibe. Right or wrong, that kid was totally being a jacka$$. Hopefully we won't have to hear much of that crap, especially since this isn't an election year (that incident was in '04).
I don't like discussing politics in public much anyway...let alone at a weekend long concert where I'm just trying to have a good time. People can say all they want about Bush, that's not gonna bother me (I'm not his biggest fan myself), but it's when they make it personal (about me) that sets me off.

I'm a former Marine myself with tattoos also. I've never had a problem. People generally don't care what tattoos you have just as long as you come relaxed and ready for a good time.
I'd guess that if anyone says anything to you at all about your tatts... it's more likely to be a comment of support rather than a criticism... but I guess you never know. But I'll bet you a spinach mozzadilla that nobody really says anything about them
You're going to a hippie festival... confrontation really shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't park an suv sporting "W" stickers anywhere near the event but you shouldn't get hassled about some military ink.
I'm in agreement w/ the other posts most likely the most you'll get is "hey, cool tats". There's always a couple of asshats no matter where you go but there's probably less of them at roo than in the population as a whole. If you have any problems it'll probably be from some "tougher than you" local rather than anyone from the "roo scene", but even that is slim chance. Most there are down with the "don't judge another" vibe. Just my $0.02.

I get into politics quite a bit and the last place i want to get a debate going is at a festival, its good to talk to people about issues but i think most peeps while in the festival atmposphere would rather shrug off differences than get into an arguement...
Theres obviously alot of anti bush and anti war sentiment going down at Roo' but i dont think most people would look down on you for your service. A few might look at you crosseyed and wonder what possessed you to join the military but but i dont think people would disrespect you in any way. Anyone who does is a poor reflection of the Bonnaroo spirit...
ya man i would agree... most of the people at roo are against the war but 100 percent for the soldiers... of course i base all that on years past .... this years lineup will make it a slightly different crowd that im not familiar with....some of my younger relatives and friends are part of this crowd and they dont know what respect is all about when they talk about things like politics that they really dont know anything about.... i would just try to ignore them if it happens...no reason to get tossed from roo over some punks non-sense...but i seriously doubt you will have any problems at all, even the newbies will be there to chill and have a good time...
you might have to endure some anti war tshirts, but hey if they respect your tats then im sure you can tolerate their tshirts

The first year of roo we borrowed my boyfriend's uncle's van to drive down. He had a pretty prominent Bush sticker on his back window and being the liberals we are, we covered it up. But about halfway thru roo, my boyfriend took down the tape covering it for some reason (probably so we wouldn't forget later). No one said a word to us. We are probably some of the worst culprits arguing about politics, but roo's so not the place. Plus, even though I don't agree with the war, I respect the people who are willing to devote themselves and their lives to the military. As long as they aren't jerks to me because I'm a liberal!

I will probably be wearing an anti war shirt this year at some point but you better believe Im all for the guys sacrificing their lives for us. My dad served In vietnam and told me a few times about how it sucked to come back to people calling them things. My brother, a submariner in the Navy just retired a few months ago after 20 years. Needless to say with my pacifist anti-war attitude i stuck out in a military family. If my brother wasnt such an ass Id love for him to come with me lol. If anyone does say anything to ya, all it will take is a look and a point to the USMC tat and they'll go away. And like one guy said, you'll probably get a lot of respect for your tats lol. Have a good time this year and thx.
Last year I bought a button for $1 that said "buck fush" because it was just too damn funny to pass up and stuck it on my camelback. That's about as political as I was interested in getting - there is way too much going on during the weekend to worry about that crap. I go to Bonnaroo to escape from reality As liberal as I am, I would never ever disrespect an American soldier and I can't imagine anyone else that I saw there would. If I were you, I wouldn't even give it a second thought ~ it should really be a non-issue.
Thanks for all the responses ladies and germs, I appreciate it. I think Roo would be the last place on earth I'd want to get into a political discussion. The anti-Bush sentiment wouldn't bother me, like I said I'm not his biggest fan either - which incidentally had nothing to do with me getting out of the Corps, that's another story.
I'm not losing sleep or anything over this, just thought I'd try to get some feedback. It seems like it's a pretty chill crowd, which works just fine for me. And for the record - I love hippies, my sister's one. Look for me, I'll be the guy with "Death before Dishonor" inked across the top of my back (among various others), I can't imagine there would be too many like that at Roo.
Yeah it's one of my favorites. It's amazing how addicting tats can be though. When I got my first one everyone told me that I'd keep getting more. I said "Nah, not me. I can just do one." Fraid not.
My roommates got them at 'roo a few yrs back, and introduced them to me, and we make them often at our house. But they say the ones they got at roo seemed better than our recreations for whatever reason... so I'm hoping to find the "original" at roo!
I guarantee the spinach mozadilla was first created because someone had the bad case of the munchies and just grabbed whatever they had in the fridge and slapped it together and said, "dude, this is soooo tasty..... we should sell these at bonnaroo and make an assload of moolah!"
badfish, just out of curiosity, how many are more than a few tattoos?
14 in all - 6 of which are Marine tats.
The only thing that's going to ruin your time is worrying about what everyone else thinks. I'm dead serious about that.
Like I said, I'm not losing any sleep over it or anything, just curious. Ultimately I don't really care what people think, I'm not ashamed my service one bit. But if someone comes at me with that kind of trash I'll snap.
Like everyone said I doubt anyone will saying anything, most people are too spun to even notice tats. If some jerk says something then just tell them off and walk away. I would do your best not to snap should something come up.
