I am not a roughing type of guy and I was thinking of getting one of these for my tent. Any particular brand should I look for?Any type I should stay clear from?
Well I'm not sure on which Brands to select/stay away from. But you will need to make a decisions on how much you want to spend on one.
If you are only going to use the air matress for Bonnaroo and maybe a couple other times camping or something, go to a wal-mart or something and don't spend more than 30-60 bucks on one. I have a Coleman that has held up fine for $40.
If you have a lot of use for the bed, for instance as a spare bed when guests spend the night than you might consider a nice bed by "Aero". Their premium pillowtop is about $200 for a queen, but it has a built in pump with remote control for easy adjustment, a nice carry bag, and most importantly, it's really really comfortable. Honestly, I've slep on one of these and it might as well be a nice real bed or something. Way more comfortable than a regular air matress but only worth the dough if you can put it to good use more than once a year.
If you just want one for bonnaroo just head to wal-mart and spend 50 bucks on a coleman or whatever brand they have.
An electric pump is absolutely invaluable. I think I used a hand pump one year and it is quite a chore in the Tennessee sun. Make sure you are getting one that is capable of going cordless too, I made this mistake once and had to return one.
I don't go camping more than a couple times a year anymore, so I found the cheap Walmart Ozark Trail mattress has worked just fine. Then after roo last year I went to this store that was closing down and selling everything super cheap (I think it was Amazing Savings, but there are others around like it...) and I bought one of those twin size yellow ones that my grandmother used to have from the 70's - and I wish I had bought more! It held up great all summer, I even used it when I had friends over. Basically if you're not using it much, I'd say the cheaper the better. Walmart doesn't have all of them listed on the website so I'd check out the store before ordering one from ebay, since it may turn out to be cheaper without shipping costs.
Like someone else said though, make sure you figure out the pump situation beforehand cause those the ones you have to do by hand are the DEVIL!
so, if i got a twin size one that should easily hit in a tent that holds 2-3 ppl?
If this helps, I found that my tent that is made for 4 people holds one twin size and one full size mattress comfortably - so it ends up sleeping 3. They tend to allot only a little space per person, not the size equal to a mattress.
I'd say forget the pump. What you should do is take a nice big hit every now and then and then blow into the mattress. That way if you run out of substance to abuse, you have a nice big stockplie to fall back on. Remember: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Took your advice and got a queen sized inflatable mistress off this site on the internet. Not that impressed, hard to keep from rolling off and no pump (did have this weird vibrating gizmo though...)

I sleep on a backpacking self inflating foam matress(Thermarest), they're super super lightweight but obviously not like a blow up coleman mattress or anything... Really damn comfortable though and so lightweight and packable probably takes up less space than your sleeping bag...
