Several of my friends and I went to bonnaroo last year for our first time. Music was great, there was plenty of shit to keep us busy, but we failed miserably when it came to setting up our camp.
Most of the guys in our group, including myself, preferred to drink the whole time as opposed to smoking, tripping, etc., and needless to say waking up every morning in a tent that smelled more and more like ass every day in 100-degree weather didn't really help much with the hangovers.
We're all planning on going again this year, but want to do it right. We've already learned from most of our mistakes from last year (such as only bringing potato chips, cheez-its, and 52 frozen hamburger patties to live on for the entire event), but it'd be great if anyone has some good advice on camping or equipment to take along with us to make it go a little easier on us this year.
Do you use those with a tent or just the tarps and rope? We don't have a tent (and last time our tent was a disaster), so we were just going to set up a makeshift thing over the car and sleep in the car. (And I know it can get hot, but we ended up sleeping in our car one year, and it really wasn't that bad...plus, we figure the tarp should keep it cool).

I'm not sure it even matters whether you sleep in a car or a tent, because the insufferable heat will have you up and moving by 10 a.m., regardless of where you sleep.
Assuming you have enough space, the car may be a better bet though, if only because you won't get soaked if it rains again. Cushions are probably good, too.
try to camp by the trees! we had tree shade on our entire site until about 2pm everyday. one day i slept until then. the 20 minute walk to centeroo was SO worth that extra sleep time... especially considering how late i was up every night(morning?).
I always set up a tent and then connect the tarps to the tent and other stuff. I usually go with two cars so we connect the ropes and tarps between tents and cars. This way it keeps your tent a bit cooler and you always have a shady place to hang out under without being in the tent. Tarps are great because they keep things pretty open so you get a nice breeze going through at all times. Those shade tents that don't have any walls on them work the best I think. You really just need to cover the sides that the sun is coming in on.
I am thinking the same thing you are. Maybe have a tent in case it is going to be nasty weather or what-not, and just have a tarp for being out in the day-time. A way to escape the heat, yet still allowed the air to come through. Hell, if the weather isn't that bad could you possibly even sleep outside just on the ground... or is that just not going to happen? I kind of think like that would be a little much, but it could be nice...
I slept outside one night in '04. It wasn't too bad, but I woke up all dewy!
The night of the crazy, torrential rain that year, our tent flooded (I guess we didn't do such a great job setting it up), and we ended up sleeping in our car, which was actually pretty nice.

If you lay down one of those plastic pads sleeping on the ground is certainly an option. I planned on sleeping on the ground one night, but i ended up just passing out in a lawn chair, which is also an option, haha.

Someone ALWAYS ends up on a lawn chair, and actually, it's not too bad.

shade, bring something to provide shade or else hope your next door friends do. If they don't, forget hanging out by the tent as the sun is tooooo much.

oh yeah chairs are recommended as well. I have some of those bagged chairs with the cup holder in the arm. They are still in the trunk from last year. They are nice to chill on while you wait for your slow ass tent mates try and get ready to leave....
