As a testament to the far reaching impact of his music, I woke up today to find that The Banner, a heavy hardcore band, had changed their black and white profile picture to black and purple. Love it.

we had our after tax season party last night. I truly love the people I work with, but any given group of CPAs aren't exactly the most down people if you know what I'm saying. Once the drinks started at the karaoke started the first song sang was Little Red Corvette. Our head IT guy confided in me the first date he ever went on was when he took a girl to see Purple Rain. EVERYONE has a Prince story, not just the music nerds like us.
when I saw Prince at MSG in 2010 before the Phish run I've never seen a slice of America like that crowd. White and black, young and old, squares and freaks, and everything inbetween. As usual I was stone cold sober that night but after The Beautiful Ones > Lets Go Crazy the whole goddamn night is a blur. Prince had that rare gift that exceeded artistry and certainly exceeded celebrity. Sure, at first you see him and you get the celebrity rush because it's Prince, but after the music started you're in his world where you are just like him and there are no barriers, no fame, no bullshit. Just art.
If Bowie taught me it's OK to be weird, Prince taught me it's OK to have fun.

ya know what really pisses me off, especially being from MN, that people on my fb feed have the balls to say that the government may have been in on this and how it's a conspiracy to distract from the political debates going on. HOW CAN YOU BE SO FUCKING STUPID TO BELIEVE SOMETHING LIKE THAT. i'll even give 9/11 truthers a break as being smarter than the person that posted this

I was driving into New Orleans around 3 this morning for Jazz Fest and the Super Dome was lit in purple. It was beautiful. I wanted to stop in the middle of I10 and take a photo.

Superdome, Eiffel Tower, Niagra Falls, and others all purple.
so happy that you are in New Orleans for jazzfest, especially at a time like this. never ceases to overwhelm me that all the music we celebrate on this forum started at the corner of n. rampart and st. peters st.
i'll be there next week to kiss the ground outside the gospel tent.
Was in the middle of First Ave last night until about 2 am joining in on the Prince dance party. he brought joy to so many folks.
His parents are interred where i work. no word yet if prince will be laid to rest here as well.
that must've been awesome man!!! sad i won't be able to make it. we're actually going to a show tomorrow downtown, maybe we'll walk over at 2 once it's over lol

I seen some shit like this too. Except they wanted to kill off an independent intelligent black man and steal the rights to his recordings. Or some shit like that.
Edit / expansion on my Facebook post from the night before last, now with a day's perspective:
In early February, there were rumours online that Prince would be playing a few shows in Australia later that month. At first I assumed these would be small industry-only gigs, so I didn't even let myself dream. But then a glimmer of hope: he would be doing two shows at the Sydney Opera House. My #1 bucket list act at my favourite venue on the planet - how could I not? So I took a bite out of the ol' savings acct, YOLOed it the F up with good seats… and then subsisted on a diet of peanut butter sandwiches and pasta for the next 6 weeks. The single-most expensive face value ticket I’ve ever bought, by more than double - and it was worth every.last.fucking.penny. It was the greatest show I have ever seen, and I will cherish the memories from that night on my deathbed. Prince set a new bar for what excellence means that night, and I question how that concert could ever possibly be topped.
I set several alarms, and anxiously waited ’til tickets were released…. 15-20 minutes after the advertised on-sale time. It was only the luck of the draw that I refreshed at the right time to secure one. After two nerve-wracking and very expensive hours, I was shaking when I saw the confirmation screen pop up: "congratulations Jack, you're going to Prince!" It didn't even seem real. The show was a mere eleven days after the on-sale date (early by his standards), but even that felt too long to wait. But the email was there, and the money was very obviously no longer in my account. This was real. This was happening…. and it was happening soon.
Initially, I was slightly bummed that he would only be playing piano, and not guitar. Any disappointment vanished within seconds of him taking the stage. For someone who has built his career on guitar and heavy production, you sometimes forget that he has such an incredible understanding of the fundamentals of music...until you are standing there, feeling the most beautiful voice flowing through you, tickling those ivories so flawlessly that you’ve completely forgotten that the piano is not even his main instrument. His gorgeous honeyed voice sometimes got buried in his mixes on record - but with only a piano to accompany, there was nothing to hide behind. No crazy effects or flash production. No guest spots. He didn’t even have his light show yet, and I think I prefer it that way - just deep purple spotlights, and candelabras scattered about the stage. It was intimate. This show was all about beauty in simplicity - just a piano and a microphone, like the tour name said. But Prince doesn’t need all those extra bells and whistles. He was so incredibly captivating that anything else would have been a distraction.
Vanity had died just a few days earlier, and he was clearly very upset over it - but he poured every lunch of that energy into his songs that, and it showed. He played a gorgeous ad-lib to Little Red Corvette in her memory. Baby, you're much too fast... if only people were more open to heeding their own advice.
Many parts were funky and dancey, but there were even more parts that were sombre, such as that. Staring up at one of the world’s largest organs behind him only added to the church-like feeling of the night.
On a more personal level, and something I rarely discuss on social media - I used to have epilepsy until I was 16. When you have been told since childhood that you have certain limitations, and that’s just the way it is, it stings. You can't drive, you can’t join the army, and you can’t perform on stage - so to see an artist who has suffered from the same condition playing so brilliantly is very inspiring, for reasons beyond just the music or stagemanship. The whole night was full of moments as beautiful as the ones I dared to sneak on film.
Prince said (and I wish I could remember his exact words) that anyone can play the notes, but the spaces between the notes are what makes something funky or not. Or as Debussy said, “the music is not in the notes, but in the silence between them. Prince and Debussy. I’m happy to get schooled by two of the all-time greats. And I don't think it's wrong to consider them in the same league. Without question, that was the greatest show I've ever seen, and I am so grateful to have experienced that in this lifetime. The Purple One may have left the building... but what beautiful memories he left me with just before he did.
Rest in peace, my sweet Prince. Thank you for the all the memories, all the emotions, all the moments. And no, Prince - nothing compares to *you*.

I also have a couple sneaky videos from that night - Kiss & Nothing Compares 2 U. I won't embed them here, but I'll happily link them to whoever asks. In Kiss, I'm clearly more focused on dancing than filming, but Nothing Compares came out pretty well.

Kinda messed up, but I think pretty much every Prince video and a few full concerts are on youtube. Guess nobody is taking stuff down anymore since he's passed. Wouldn't be surprised if he's back on Spotify in the near future.

or the opposite. That's temporary while people are mourning/ his management, family, etc are too busy with other things to give a fuck about people posting videos. I wouldn't be surprised if they're up for a bit then taken down after a week or two.

Yeah this is what I was thinking too. I think it'd be disrespectful to suddenly completely go against something that was so important to him, but for right now it'd probably also be in bad taste to work fervently to take them down so soon after his death. I think they're letting it slide while the grief is fresh and those videos serve a purpose in terms of mourning/closure, and then as they start to get their affairs in order they'll probably be removed again.

Without havin' ever been the biggest Prince fan, I have only ever loved his tunes. Especially with this piano tour I was really hopin' to finally catch him live! At work today "I Would Die 4 U" started playin' and my GM and I had a little moment. You lucky cats at the ATL shows were mentioned.
Me and a friend stood in line for two hours before givingup on getting in to the all night party at First Avenue before collapsing of exhaustion. And t was fine - just being outside the club felt like tribute enough. I am mad the supposedly 24 hour McDonald's in south Minneapolis was closed, though.

Totally ridiculous what people will believe.
I had an Anti-vaxxer FB friend post something along the lines of it being some big conspiracy to get more people to get the flu shot. People are really fucking insane.

I feel awful saying this. I love and miss Prince. But I have heard Purple Rain like two or three times an hour since Friday.... Can we as a society just pick another Prince song?

You shouldn't feel awful for saying that, I generally agree with you, but liking your own post is unforgivable and you should feel awful for that

Haha, good call.
I typed that on my tablet (old and cracked). I must have pressed like while I was scrolling.
I should probably just go buy a new tablet, but the internets just a fad and I already beat Pocket Mortys.
Wasn't expecting that to happen mind you. I decided to listen to the Purple Rain album and go for a drive. Once "Let's Go Crazy" started the tears started falling. He's the first artist to make me cry. He was truly something special.
That SNL Prince tribute is on Hulu. Just watched it, really great, highly recommended. They showed a bunch of his SNL performances, which were great, but the best part is a clip from the SNL 40th Anniversary show after party. Jimmy Fallon tells the story before the clip, but the short version is it was just a general jam session with a bunch of musicians/comedians/actors whatever, and at 4:30am in the morning Prince gets up there and does this outrageous version of Lets Go Crazy. It's bluesy and slowed down and fucking awesome.
