I'm no bible scholar or anything but I do know that john's gospel is the most famous account of Judas and the one with the infamous "kiss of Judas." Not sure how prominent it is in the other gospels.
What? The kiss is important in every book except John, where it's not even mentioned in the context we think of it today. I don't even know were you are getting "the most famous account" part.
Nobody has made a compelling reason for why John is mentioned. No shit he wouldn't approve of Judus' actions. So would millions of other Christians. There has to be a more specific reason for half the clue to refer to a person named John. It's likely something more modern, seeing as people clearly don't do well with biblical references.
Like I said I'm no expert, that's just what I remember being taught. Maybe my CCD teachers sucked. Just because Judas is hated by all Christians doesn't mean this clue isn't referring specifically to the gospel of John. Just trying to figure out the clue and I still think it's Judas Priest...

Just throwing it out there... Gnostic Christians like/approve of Judas:
Yeah but if you look at FFF 2014, Modest Mouse and Nas were the next big headliners. The point of funfunfun fest is to NOT have huge headliners. Slayer has been the overall #1 act at FFF before and they were LN tent at roo.
Exactly, comparing them to the other headliners that year (Nas, Death Cab) they're like, 8th on the Roo lineup at best and most likely somewhere from 11-15. Definitely would be fine in a tent.
Definitely not arguing that! I was just pointing out that it's a good catch in general and disagreeing with someone saying they'll have trouble filling a tent. I think a late night tent, like Slayer, is a perfect spot for them.

Agreed, I like that they're getting an act or two like them every year now.
That being said, is it even Judas Priest? All Them Witches should probably still be on the table, as small of an act as they may be. Still think JP makes the most sense though.

I see it possible that All Them Witches play (as do I see Father John Misty playing). But I think this specific clue is about JP.

This gospel appears to have been written between 85 and 100 CE. There is no consensus among theologians concerning what individual or group wrote the book. This gospel mentions Judas more often than synoptic gospels (Mark, Matthew and Luke) do. He thoroughly assassinates Judas' character.
I don't know much about the bible either, and I was just looking online for something that might tie in the second part of the clue to Judas Priest.
Just stopping by to say that I think this is All Them Witches. Judas was not a preacher of a dark act, he just did a dark act. Witches are portrayers of dark acts, and John Proctor in the Crucible disapproved of witches.

I didn't say anything about Judas being hated, and I wasn't trying to claim that as a reason it doesn't relate to the Gospel of John. Jesus Christ. It could very well be about John. The thing is John is credited with wrote several books in the bible, including Revelations. Rock/metal bands have had a field day with the imagery/ideas from that book. So it's a much wider range then Judus, who isn't specifically hinted at all in the clue.
My point was no one was making a case for the second half of the clue, except shoehorning in a Judus/John connection by working backwards. Which might have been the clue makers intentions. It's not like they are great at making these.
Edit: Strawberry Milk did make a good connection above.

To make people guess FJM?
They've certainly seemed to have done misleading things like that in the past. But yeah, it would be awful if this was actually FJM.
I think it's All Them Witches, because of "a dark act" - an act is a part of a play, which would strengthen the idea that John is from the play The Crucible.

I feel like both COULD work, and I no longer know if I am feeling stronger towards one or the other. The point about John disapproving and how that ties in with JP is valid.

I think we may be overanalyzing the John portion of the clue. This isn't the DJJD days when an oddly placed comma could be the key to cracking a clue. It's just as likely that an AC intern Googled "Which book of the Bible was Judas in?", got John back as the first result, and ran with it.

It could definitely be All Them Witches. But, your argument against JP doesn't really get us anywhere - a Priest is a preacher, so that part of the clue still fits.

The best connection anyone has made for All Them Witches to the "preachers" part is a song called Dirt Preachers. I'm fairly certain that "preachers" is a synonym for something in the band's name, or that the entire first half is a direct reference to the band's full name, both of which better fit Judas Priest. Just because they have the word witch in their name that means they preach witchcraft? I'm not terribly familiar with the band, are they all about witchcraft or just general horror/occult themes?
I still think All Them Witches will be there, based on the glaring tour gap between Ohio and Forecastle dates. But I'm confident (hoping?) that we got Judas Priest here.

I think the arguments for each of the popular choices on this clue (FJM, Judas Priest, All Them Witches) all make sense. In order of what I'd like the answer to be I'd have to say FJM>All Them Witches>Judas Priest, however for what makes the most to least sense for this clue I'd say it's the opposite (IMO)- Judas Priest>All Them Witches>FJM. Although I do think All Them Witches would be a weak choice to select as a clue.

The answer seems to be Judas Priest, and honestly all three of those guesses have a good chance of being there in general.

Any opinions on Reverend and the Makers? Lead singer is Jon McClure. Kinda sounds like Ozzy on this song.
That's an interesting coincidence with the band name and singer but I'm not seeing how it goes with the rest of the clue. what dark acts is the reverend involved with/preaching about? What does Jon not approve of?
Edit: Also, it's highly unlikely that the John part of the clue is referring to a band member.

The song "The Gun" references infamous figures that have been affected by a gun. The singer says "when my bang bang bangs a commin', ahhhhhhhh get runnin'" "I've killed Kennedys, Kings, and Tsars. I did for Lennon, did for Hitler, did for Lee Oswald"
The entire song refers to guns/war, and imo, words. Guns/War/Nasty rhetoric - only in a oddly funhouse kind of way. In all instances, Mr. Lennon did not approve. Lead singer Jon is very political/anti-war.
He has said "all the powers that be, preach fear. To keep control. When I play, I'm going to war. War to fight against that control" But, of course, it's probably Judas Priest
