Word. Buku is probably the most underrated festival in the south. Beyond the inevitable lame pop act or two they bring solid acts year after year. Like I said after last year, there is no way I would ever not do vip again. All the Abita Amber and Wild Turkey 101 I can drink, the riverboat and easy front row or balcony for every show for 300-325 rules. I missed year 1 but some of the shit I've seen there:
Public Enemy Primus in 3D Lotus Explosions in the Sky Boosie Badazz A$AP Rocky Big G Tribe Tribe with Big G Gramatik Lettuce Calvin Harris Break Science Floss Nas Bone Thugs Bassnectar Lips Schoolboy Q Beats Antique GRiZ Thundercat TV on the Radio Ghostface Hudson Mohawke Run the Jewels
Damn. That's some of the major shit that I can remember. Buku (maybe other than Voodoo or Waka at night) might be the most partying crowd there is. :stretcher service baby: ------------- Not sure which way they go this year with the Goldenvoice/AEG buyout.
How is Shaky Knees underrated? It could be cool as can be but I thought the forum overplayed a lot of the indie acts. I would have gone if I was in Atlanta, it's also much bigger.

BUKU seems like it would be the shiz but there's never been enough to get me to go.
im tellin you, its worth it man. totally unbeatable energy and the best festival to see/hear new acts at.
They've been ahead of the curve in offering the perfect boutique festival experience. It's only going to get better as the fine tune the process. NOLA. Decent weather. Always solid lineup. Fair price (great VIP value). Better location to get in and out than City Park/Racetrack.
This year was my first time going and it was incredible. Friday: Robert Delong > STS9 > A$AP Rocky > Empire of the Sun > Boozie Badass > Flosstradomus > STS9 Saturday: Raury > BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface > DJ Windows 98 (Win Butler) > Lil B > Bassnectar > Makonnen > Porter Robison. That variety was just incredible. It's the perfect mix of electronic, hip hop, and indie music. Saying it's the best party atmosphere is really the perfect way to describe it. I only went because I had spring break that week and my friends really wanted to go. But damn I'm so happy I went, because I wouldn't have known how awesome this festival is if I didn't. Buku, Shaky Knees, Bonnaroo and then Afropunk in two months....I'm on a pretty good roll this year.
Anyways who do we want to see there next year? There's always a lot of great surprises in their lineup so it's kind of hard to predict. Tame Impala would be pretty dope in the Empire of the Sun slot
Idk. I'm just hoping they don't flip to a bunch of house. Otherwise, I don't care. Big G is due back, and they mesh perfectly with the 504. Papadosio is due a ballroom set (btw neglected to mention a great Portugal set last year). Beats is due back as is Keys N Krates and Break Science. Just as long as they continue to balance out the rock, rap and electronica, I'll be happy. If I got to pick 2 from each genre and ignored acts from last year, I'd take ice Cube and Juvenile for rap, Disco Biscuits and Big G for livetronica, Pretty Lights live/improv and RL for Djs and maybe Quixotic and Beats Antique live with Preservation Hall for random band acts.
BUKU books exactly the type of hip-hop and EDM that attracts the bro-iest of the bros. No way I'd put up with that obnoxious crowd.
I have a very low tolerance for the bro-iest of bros, but I didn't have a bad experience with those types of people at all. Most of the people I met were just really awesome music lovers. Maybe it's because I didn't go to a lot of those types of shows (only saw second half of Floss to get a spot for Die Antwoord and only saw Porter Robison cuz he closed out the festival and I wasn't ready for everything to be over yet) to be honest I barely saw any EDM and my weekend was still packed with back to back shows. Also all the hip hop fans were pretty cool. I've had way worse run-ins with the "bros" at Bonnaroo than anyone at Buku

There is a minor bro factor, but it's more of a party fest. I haven't seen anyone fighting or being macho dicks there or trying to front or stunt. It's a more mature crowd since they went 18+ in 2014. Last year in particular, it just seemed like everyone was in a great mood both days.

Yeah, the past lineups don't scream "good taste," but hey, maybe GV helps them book something decent?
It's a pretty standard formula. EDM, Hip-Hop and Indie and each year fluctuates between subgenres. I just hope they get some money to book indie/alt rock acts that equal the Untz. They've booked their fair share of big DJs and rappers, but a solid power plant set at night with production from a rock act would be cool. Counter it with some cheese DJ but just once I would like to see that at BUKU.
My only issue is having one of the worst possible festival names in existence. And I guess the lineup's only so-so for me. Other than that, it's not too bro'd out, more young than anything.

Buku was cool but if I we go back I think we are for sure going vip. The people we met were just too fucked up. i would agree this is a party festival but more like the lets take Molly and roll our balls off kinda party. Also had a guy behind me who thought it would be cool to smash his crown royal bottle on the concrete after he finished it. Thanks dick, people are trying to get their groove on for bassnectar.
The lineup was golden though. Security was a little buku.

Last year the bigger live band acts at Power Plant were a little weak for my tastes (Empire of the Sun, Passion Pit), but a lot of people like them. Prior years though had great rock and rap sets at the Power Plant. Nas doing the first 20th Anniversary Illmatic show, Primus in 3D (didn't see the Kid Cudi young fan issues that some others also in the front saw), Flaming Lips, Lettuce, Public Enemy, etc.

Yeah, security is a little bit of a bitch there though as you alluded, everyone manages. They only arrest people working though.
I figured out last year that you pretty much have to do VIP. The Riverboat alone is worth it and has great views, though I could just sit and stare at the river all day anyway. Plus free alcohol. Being able to walk right up to a prime spot makes a big difference when you're moving from stage to stage or set to set. I met a lot of really nice people in VIP where there no douche factor.

It is 200% better than it was when the age limit was 16. Also, in VIP you don't have to deal with the bros. I will never go back to GA at BUKU. It isn't worth it.

I hear you, and I completely agree that I'm not going back to GA, but I thought it was still worth it. For < $150.00 pre-sale price, you get a solid 2 days worth of shows and a fun 2 day party. I think salads or mobilehangoutfan76 and I talked about that in last year's thread and I have discussed with plenty of people offline. While most people agree with me, not everyone does. I maintain that the intensity of the partying at this festival makes it/me better off ending on Saturday night/Sunday morning in the wee hours. There have been some rough Sundays after Buku. But for $300, you get the premium viewing (including upstairs, close-in balcony at the Ballroom), creature comforts, the riverboat and its bars as well as VIP shows on the boat. My thing is you're getting quality liquor, and if you can drink 10 drinks over the course of 10 hours, they're almost paying you to go hang out there. I think the VIP value is only second to Wakarusa for any of the fests I've attended (GA or VIP). And so many of our group were freaking out over the perks they saw me and my friend Peter utilizing, that they all said they'd do VIP in 2016. Whether they have the money or not when the time comes, who knows. But I'll be back in VIP.

I meant crowd-wise, GA isn't worth it for me. I've done GA twice, the first year I went when the age was still 16 and last year. Last year in GA was so much better than the last time I was GA, but I noticed in VIP you don't have to deal with the bros and the drunk young kids, or the overdosing kids, because there are quite a few. Plus all the perks you get with VIP. I won't do GA again, I wasn't going to even go, but my girl last minute bought tickets and at the time I just didn't have the funds to do VIP. I am too old to have to fuck around with the young crowd BUKU attracts.
One more thing - mobile said that their Twitter account was getting active. I don't have Twitter, so I don't check it very often. Last year Buku announced their save the date during Mad Decent. On September 2, 2014, they released the terms of the pre-sale which began on September 5. Not including dick fees, GA was $139.50, VIP was $299.50, and Super VIP was $599.50.
So if they use similar dates, we're talking pre-sale in 3 weeks.
As someone of the demographic you guys are talking about, kids who can't handle their shiz are my biggest pet peeve.
So Disclosure is playing the Mardi Gras World Ballroom in October. Anybody going?
Probably not. I don't know them that well, and I'll be seeing GRiZ the Saturday before (10/3/15). Also, if I end up going or not going to ACL Weekend 2, there is something that weekend I'd be seeing here (can't remember exactly what at the moment). As to your other point, yeah. I'm not exactly the paragon of non-partying virtue. I may even occasionally require assistance walking out the gate or standing up. But outside of trolling people for fun, I'm not one to ever cause trouble for anyone else. All my kids and their friends would agree with you too. Be able to handle your stuff. Sometimes things happen (dehydration and what not), but it's preventable with just a little common sense. Also, more to what Festival Snob was saying, there's not one of their group of 15-20 people (ranging in age from about 19-25) that can remotely stand "bros." They have looked down on them like the punks in the hardcore days looked down on the neo-Nazi skins or the way most people looked at the hey bras from the arena rock days.
To tell the truth, of all the festivals I went to this year so far (Buku, Jazzfest, Hangout, Wakarusa, Bonnarroo, Pass the Good) Bonnaroo was the most Bro'd and Fratty of them all. I didn't have any hassles there, and all people were cool with me, so I'm not discounting that everyone who looks like a bro actually is one. But I thought it stuck out there in sharp contrast to Bonnaroo 2012 or even places where you'd expect them more (e.g. Hangout or Buku). JMO
