Members: Roland Orzabal (what a tubular name, amiright?) and Curt Smith (keepin’ it British to the max!)
Biography: Orzabal and Smith were in a British new-wave band together that was having little success, so they formed their own thing and named it Tears for Fears, inspired byfamed psychotherapist Arthur Janov (he became like, totally famous when John Lennon started seeing him. Primal Scream also got their pretty rad name from one of his books.) Ya know that song “Mad World” by Gary Jules (gag me with a spoon) ? Yeah, well these guys wrote it, and their version is totally gnarly. When it was released, it propelled them to the top of the UK charts, and started their rise to fame. (oh you like the gary jules version better? What’s your damage? It’s so not even cool.) It was their second album, Songs From the Big Chair, that made them international superstars and enduring 80’s hitmakers. If you haven’t heard “shout” you must have been living under a rock for 30 years. World tours, Brit Awards, MTV music awards, a (cancelled) spot in LiveAid. These dudes were like, certified huge. No buggin.’ They released their third album, another massive hit in 1989. And though called “The Seeds of Love,” the duo, like everything else in the 80’s, was suffering from inner turmoil fueled by excess. The seeds of love did not take root, and they parted ways. Orzabal retained the Tears for Fears name and released some forgettable stuff in the 90’s. The duo regrouped in 2000, and released a new album together in 2004. They have tour sporadically in this time, and have on multiple occasions said that a new album is coming. As of now, they have release a few remixes on youtube.
Major Discography: The Hurting (1983) – Contains such classics as “Mad World”, and “Pale Shelter.” It is pretty sparse, moody synth-pop concept album about the traumas of childhood. Pretty heady stuff, ya dig?
Songs from the Big Chair (1985) – “Shout”, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, “Head over Heels.” This is their biggest album, and a high point for 80’s pop music. Listed as one of the 1001 albums to hear before you die, it is almost universally acclaimed. It was named after a TV film called Sybil about a gril with multiple personalities who is only comfortable in her analyst’s chair.
Sowing the Seeds of Love (1989) – Their final 80’s album before the break up. The title track and Woman in Chains are popular.

Physical Reaction/Live Show: They do not tour that often, or extensively (especially compared to their 80's world tours). I have never seen them, but here is a review from a show last september in LA "they really stepped things up even more with this outing. They are definitely serious about their art, and seem to just get better and better with age." That article also has some nice history about the band as well. This is a website for fans going to their shows.
Interesting tidbits : This article is gold. The "trivia" section of their IMDB page says "British band." like, no doy.
Personal Notes : This was a personal bucket list of mine, and probably top on my bonnaroo must-see list. I even had them on my winning (not-so-humble-brag) lineup prediction for Horn's contest. I'm gonna be going nuts, because I never thought I would get to see them. Though they just announced they are playing a casino near my house the week after bonnaroo. so it goes.

BTW awesome write up. I've been really digging what I've heard from them thus far. Only heard a few songs throughout my life randomly but I'll def listen to their albums soon. That cover just moved them up my list 80 points though.

Yep. It's awesome isn't it? They've also done remixed of Arcade Fire, Hot Chip, and a couple others as part of their comeback thing.
