Flume Cause I need all the joy you bring!
General Info:
Harley Edward Streten is an Australian producer, instrumentalist and DJ better known as Flume. He began his career in 2010 under the pseudonym HEDS and produced mostly house music. In 2011, he entered and won a competition held by the Australian record company Future Classic. They signed him and turned the three songs he entered into the competition, "Sleepless", "Over You" and "Paper Thin", into Flume's first EP.
In November of 2012 Flume released his self-titled debut album in Australia seeing immediate success. It only took five weeks for the album and his breakout single "Holdin' On" to go gold. Furthermore, the single had begun to garner support from other DJs and radio stations in the European market. That's when Flume set his sights on worldwide fame saying, “I feel like my kind of music is more suited overseas. Things could get more serious in the States and Europe.”
Flume saw a United States release in February of 2013. The album received mixed reviews, lacked exposure and didn't sell nearly as well as it had in the Australian and European markets. However, Flume's next project, a collaborative EP with Future Classic label-mate Chet Faker, would begin to build Flume's reputation in the US. The song "Drop the Game", accompanied by a great video, allowed Flume to showcase his unique style to a wider audience than ever before.
It was finally a remix that gave Flume the recognition he needed to break into the mainstream US market. Gorgeous remixes of "HyperParadise", "Slasherr", "A Baru in New York" and "You & Me" built up to him dropping his version of Lorde's "Tennis Court" at Coachella 2014. His remix went viral immediately amassing a staggering 22 million plays on Soundcloud. Since then Flume has been relatively quiet. He's teased an new album, but there is limited information about it. He's also worked on a few experimental remixes. Notably, a ten minute long version of Afterlife by Arcade Fire. It's difficult to tell where Flume's career will go from here, but he's young, talented and driven. That's a powerful combination.

Genre: Electronic, Experimental, Trap(ish)
It is hard to compare Flume to any other artist. Many producers, particularly in the trap genre, have tried to emulate his blend of electronic music and orchestral instrumentals. Most have failed to capture the elements that make Flume a truly unique producer. Similar Bonnaroo Artists: ODESZA is the perhaps most comparable artist to Flume.
Physical Reaction/Live Show:
Flume doesn't do anything particularly crazy during his live sets. He is busy mixing. If you want cake thrown in your face this will not be the show for that. However, If you are in the mood to dance your face off you will have a great time at this show. He plays only his own material, the mix is on point and it will be a late night. Which means we also get a glorious light show. Flume is a big fan or purple/pink so expect that to play heavily in his color motif. I'm hoping that he will play some new music as well. He's talked about a new album, but hasn't revealed anything substantial.
I've seen Flume twice. When I first saw him at SXSW a few years ago he had just turned 21, was clearly nervous and still put on a great show. For those who don't know SXSW is a very shitty festival to play: most people don't know who you are, you don't get a proper sound check and you get hardly any true crowd reaction. The kid played through that wonderfully. When I saw him a Coachella last year it was clear that he's come into his own. He boldly played his two biggest hits in the first three songs and hardly anyone left. He had the Gobi tent 100% packed for an hour long dance party that just flew by.

- He began creating music with Andrew G's Music Maker, a free music kit that he got from a box of Nurtri-Grain Bars. - His name is homage to "Flume" by Bon Iver. - He was part of group called What So Not with fellow Australian Emoh Instead. They are releasing an album in 2015, but that will mark the end of Flume's involvement with the project. Their most successful song was a trap festival anthem with RL Grime called "Tell Me". Flume likes to work a song they made called "Touched" into his live sets.
Personal Notes:
For me, what sets Flume apart from the sea of twenty-something DJ/producers is his ability to convey emotion in his songs. I'm a massive electronic music fan, but I feel that the style of music as a whole has trouble showing real emotion the way raw, non-electronic genres can. Flume has managed to break that barrier making music that is fun to dance to with real soul.
P.S. D'Angelo and Flume have late night sets on Saturday. If they conflict I will be heartbroken.

I also want to add that Flume recently remixed "Lay Me Down" by Sam Smith. I didn't want to include it in my write up, because I haven't heard it yet. I'm sure it's great though.
