Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade to make that kind of move.
Iowa State isn't a destination job, so their pickings would be limited in a light year for coaching changes. This is not a light year, so they are taking a chance on a young coach (He turns 36 today) that has held a winning record every season at Toledo with multiple appearances in the top 25 this year. If he pans out, they have a few years with a up and coming coach. If he doesn't, he's probably not breaking the bank with his paycheck and it's honestly a long shot for him to do worse than their previous coach who didn't have more than three wins in a single season over the last three seasons.

For people who know these things better than I, do the mid to lower tier bowls ever really sell out? Also, does demand go up or down after the announcement of who is playing in the bowl? I ask because the lady's mom suggested to her this past weekend that tickets to Virginia Tech's bowl game would be a great Christmas present for her dad. She would like to get them, but isn't looking to break the bank on it. Despite the draw of it being Beamer's last game, I would think their 6-6 record will keep them in a lower bowl. CBS and ESPN are both projecting the Belk Bowl for them.

I doubt their bowl game will sellout. They could be playing Tennessee.

Both guys on ESPN have them playing Miss St in the Belk and Tennessee playing Northwestern in the Outback. CBS says the same about Tennessee and actually has Virginia Tech playing LSU in the Belk.

The conference determines bowl destinations for non-selection teams, with the Capitol One Bowl getting first dibs. I doubt they would assign Tennessee to play VA Tech with the big spectacle game early next season.

If VT plays in the Belk bowl, it will bring a huge crowd of Hokie fans (Charlotte is only 2.5 hours from Blacksburg, 3 from Roanoke). I would maybe make the trip if they do. Not for sure if it will actually sell-out. My buddy who is an insider said last week that Independence Bowl was really wanting VT.
Highly doubt they will be playing UT with the matchup set for next year.

I really thought Chip Kelly would be the guy for USC. I don't see him getting another year in Philly.
Really don't want see him take the Georgia job. It seems very logical for Richt to take the Miami job. He went to school at Miami, and was the backup QB for the Hurricanes when Jim Kelly was playing.
Looking at the stats, it's pretty clearly Boyd and Scott.
Sounds good to me...

As Stewart Mandel tweeted (and I'm paraphrasing): "Georgia is treating Smart like their Harbaugh...why?"
I think part of it is that people just want it to be right. A lot of fans had emotions with Richt leaving, so they want to know that firing him was going to be a benefit in the long run. As you probably remember, Tennessee did a similar thing with the feels. People were sad as fuck that Fulmer got fired. The sadness turned to elation when Kiffin and his wonder team got announced as the replacement then the bitterness came back double when Kiffin left and we got Dooley.
He's a good hire as he has years under arguably the best coach college football over the last decade and the name recognition that comes with that along with the credibility that comes from his own personal success. On the other hand, as rdk pointed out, he has zero head coaching experience, so he is by no means a lock. He could be right back to coordinating in three years.
I think Uga made a big mistake. Letting Richt go and hiring a guy with no HC experience. They may stay about where they are but I don't see it making them better. Also I was hoping SC was going to hire Smart. They won't get Pruitt because he'll go to Bama.

Yeah. Hires with no head coaching experience never work out.

Richt also had 0 HC experience but yeah still a big risk. I'm getting a little more behind it since he's bringing Scott Cochran (Bama's S & C coach). Whoever he brings in as OC will be a big factor in his success or failure.

It may work out but I think it's a big and unnecessary risk. They had a proven consistent winner and they let him go.
As a Florida fan, I really hope that South Carolina hires Muschamp. I would hire Ed Orgeron before Muschamp. Supposedly, they're also looking at Oklahoma OC. I am about positive he would be the youngest FBS coach if he got the gig, as this has been his first season as OC at Oklahoma.
