I haven't been on the internet for like 6 hours.... and this is what I come back to?? my snapchat is full of it. my facebook is full of it. and now here?! wtf is happening and where did this even start??
I was just about to say the same thing. I hadn't been on Facebook for two days, and my news feed is mostly "guess the dress"

I saw krissyjo post this on Facebook, and thought I'd post it here as well. Apparently different people see different colors, which absolutely fascinates me. What two colors do you see in this dress?
I'm color blind so reading this thread is enlightening.
Light blue and a reddish, maybe rust for the horizontal bands.
Some of you have to be kidding, but it reinforces my theory that colors are like flavors: indescribable. You don't 'sense' what I sense.
Try reality after accepting the fact that we can't even agree on this simple sh!t.
This dress is some voodoo business, and it's worked its black (and blue) magic on all of you. It's light purple and dirty gold, people! What does it say when the one guy to get it right so far is colourblind? (not me - comcgee89)
It is so gold and white. But this debacle caused me much stress right before sleep last night - I still feel like I have so many questions and not enough answers. Even though the *scientists* have intervened with their opinion already

The thing is, I can totally see where people get the blue from this picture: I see white but it is definitely tinged with blue. However, BLACK?! there is absolutely no black on this dress (as appears in this photo).

Same, I can see where the blue comes from. The white I see definitely has some blue undertones to it. But the black, I can't see that at all.
The original image is in the middle. At left, white-balanced as if the dress is white-gold. At right, white-balanced to blue-black.
Even in that Photoshop picture showing the RGB, I see the palate as a dirty orange-y gold-ish color. But not black. In the lower parts of the dress it appears darker, but just looks like it's in the shadow's to my eyes.
If I went into a tattoo parlour and asked for something in black, and I got that instead, I'd be pissed.
Or, in the immortal words of my perma-drunk primary school woodworking teacher, "if I ask for a chocolate milkshake and I get a strawberry milkshake, am I getting what I paid for?"

The image on the far right still has NO BLACK in it to me. It goes from white/gold to blue/dark metallic-y brown color but not black. Black is the color of these words I'm typing on screen right now. THIS IS BLACK.

I read a slightly different (or maybe the same?) explanation that said that it's not the lighting in your room that makes the difference, but rather how your brain interprets the lighting in the picture. Although there is obviously backlight in the picture, a photographer weighed in to say that there is also a light source behind the camera, focusing on the dress. If your brain defaults to seeing the backlight as the only light source, it assumes that the front of the dress lies in shadow. Recognizing this, the brain removes the shadowy color from the dress, resulting in white and gold. However, if your brain (correctly) defaults to the notion that the dress is properly lit, it displays it as blue/black because no colors are being removed.

I have a tattoo that is the wrong color. It was not a color blindness issue. I wanted orange, the bottle of ink said light red. I noticed it was pretty red as the tattoo was being applied. The tattoo dude didn't feel like finding orange and I didn't feel like calling him out on it. The tattoo is a flag so naturally the colors are important and the tattoo was ruined. 10 years later the tattoo is a pretty fun joke. It just happens to be permanently on my body.
Tip to all you youngsters: If when you walk in to a tattoo parlor and one guy is passed out on a futon, gets woken up, comes out of a backroom later looking like he just shot up, go to a different place.
There are only two acceptable places to get a tattoo - at the most reputable place in town, or in prison. No middle ground.
"didn't feel like finding orange" might be the most hilariously lazy thing I've ever heard. That's like a line I'd expect to hear if the gang from It's Always Sunny ran a tattoo parlour.

I still see blue and gold. The gold is more coppery/brown. I liked sleepy's description of "dirty gold."
If the dress is actually blue and black, I'm not surprised that the black turned that weird gold color because the lighting in that photo is so awful. The first time I saw it, I scrolled passed it thinking "ow. my eyes!"
