Monie look around for grad student groups or on the Univ. of Tx website. often schools have links for new people to the area that can be really helpful in finding apartments. also check out the subreddits for austin and U of tex and ask them as well. it really helps to know the area though, especially for different living situations (will you have a car, alone or roommates, pets, etc.). In general most apartment reviews online are going to be bad. people biznatch about shizty apartments, but it doesn't always work conversely. Just from my experience stay away from Gateway apartments. they are a giant company that had complexes in knoxville and out here in Tempe, and they have really really shizty quality, maintenance, etc. in both places, and I know there is one in Austin. if at all possible, try to get there a little early and stay in a hotel or get a month-to-month until you can find your bearings and figure out what part of the city you want to live in and what you want to be nearby.
as far as moving cross country, it is going to take longer than you think. U-hauls cost more than you think. don't overpack, get rid of your shiz.
if you have a motorcycle, don't bring it with you and then not ride it for 6 months because you didn't register it and then the gas gets funky and screws up your carbs and your tank gets rusty. because that is a biznatch to clean up and fix.

Ouch. Unfortunately I don't have much advice for where to live in Austin, I lived on campus when I went to school there.
Apartment hunting will likely be my biggest hurdle once I finally find a job. Thankfully though, I have enough frequent flyer miles for about 4-5 roundtrip flights from San Antonio to Denver. So will definitely be using those to apartment hunt, and for interviews (hopefully soon).
You're going to see soooo many good shows living in Austin. I only get to go to a portion of the ones I want due to work and travel time from SA.
What degree are you going for?
Man, I wish I had flyer miles... Luckily there is this new airline (new to the US) called Spirit that flies into Dallas for crazy cheap, then I'd just have to get a rental and drive to Austin from there. Crazy cheapness makes that a real option. We'll see tho.. It maybe a two day trip at some point.
I'm going for a MA in Advertising. And I already know about all the shows that come through Austin. If I can afford to go to anything I'll be in heaven. I actually found an apartment on the back side of Emo's that I was seriously considering just because of that... But reviews included several complaints of roaches so that's out. I'm looking in that area tho (Riverside?) so wherever I end up ill probably be close. And Emo's is a venue I see on loooots of tour posters. Maybe if they have an outdoor stage I'll get some free music. Lol.
Hey there is actually a train that runs from downtown Dallas to Austin, and they opened a train direct from DFW to downtown. Not sure if love is connected by train though I'd assume it is or will be soon.
I have a really good job offer in Arizona so I might be heading there from Georgia in 3 months or so. Relocation is covered and I am waiting to hear details on that before I pack a thing, though. Of course, Savannah is a possibility too.....closer to my daughter and to the guy that I am kinda sorta seeing....and have a job offer there as well but it is such a big decision. Being a grownup sucks
A few days ago, I caught my wife peeping homes in Asheville. After tons of talking, things are starting to look like there might be a move headed our way.

Screw Dr. Patel. We're all staying with Mr. and Mrs. GL next time!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

And you will, for a bit. I got an email today saying that the culinary school that I attended got it's certification back. Long story short, I'll be here another year, I think. Plus, it's gonna take my wife a lot of time to find comparable work there (or anywhere, really). I'll be here to show you the ropes and drag you around to shows.

Originally we were going to drive to Memphis (8.5hrs), stay overnight there Saturday night. Then drive to Dallas (6.5hrs), stay overnight there then drive into Austin (3-4ish hrs) Monday morning.
New plan is to drive till we don't want to drive anymore Saturday, stay overnight somewhere. Then drive to Austin on Sunday and stay in a hotel and be in town already to get my apartment keys on Monday morning. I like this plan better....
HOWEVER, anyone have any experience on just waltzing into a hotel at any random time and requesting a room? I've always pre-booked. I once booked at room at 11am on Hotwire and got there at like 4pm the same day. But that is as last minute as I've ever booked. Not sure how walk-ins at hotels work...
Anyone who can drop some knowledge on this, or suggest an alternate/better plan, I'm all ears.
(ps. I am so freaking out. I am like 75% packed, not sure the UHaul is big enough, I'm fucking emotional as shit. I'm sad crying, I'm stress crying, I'm overwhelmed.... I'm just having quite the time over here.... Once I'm on the road I think I'll feel better, or worse- who knows we'll find out, but for right now I'm just a hot mess. I also feel like I'm forgetting something huge but I have no idea what it is.)

Yes, you'll be more than fine walking into hotels. I mean, maybe you won't - if there's an event in town or something, they may not have rooms and you may have to move on. But I've walked into many hotels and paid on the spot for a room. Also, get the priceline app on your phone and priceline it in the parking lot. That way you'll know if they have vacancy and you will get less screwed by the price.

gracias. I meant to download an app, just didn't know which one or if it's necessary.
