The Cheeto is a cheese puff - which is not structurally a chip, but falls closer to chips than most on the salty snacks spectrum. I will allow it. If pita chips can masquerade about as chips, someone oughtta let Cheetos into the party. But then again, I call everything chips...
thick-cut fries = chips thin-cut fries = chips or fries chips = chips or crisps

Cheetos are not chips. There are different types of chips - potato, tortilla, corn, etc. - just as there are different breeds of dogs. But just because you can get a gecko at the pet store and it also has four legs and a tail does not mean that it's a dog.

All I know is if I was told to bring over a few kinds of chips to a party, my cart would include some kind of puffed cheese product, but would never include peanut butter pretzels.

Personally I say they are definitely not a chip. Does the Cheeto campaign use the term "chip" at all in their marketing? Case closed.
What I'm more interested in is the demographic for the answers. Are they just called chips in certain regions or by a certain age group? Or is this just sort of an IQ test question?
Some snack items know enough not to call themselves chips. Cheetos are kind of like Sting or Bono. One word describes Cheetos and the word chip should never be associated with them.

In many parts of the south, sodas are referred to as "cokes," regardless the flavor and brand. If you ask for a coke in a restaurant, they say, "What kind?" I think "chips" can end up the same way. Most people say chips referring only to potato chips, but other people will say, "What kind," and refer to cheetos, tortillas, etc. That doesn't make Sprite a Coke and it doesn't make Cheetos a chip.
To further spur this discussion, does it matter if they are crunchy or puffed? What if they are extruded shapes vs their natural crunchy shape? These things are important, people!

I'm curious how many people that voted yes in this poll are from those parts of the south (aka the twilight zone).
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
After much thought, I'm going to say NO. Cheetos are not chips. I may group them in to the "chip" category when talking generally (as in someone says "Hey, pick up some chips for the party" and I bring Cheetos) but they are still different.
