The funniest part of this NHL season for me is the "goalie controversy" in NYC. People actually think Talbot has earned the right to start.
Media focus in 2-3 general areas of a struggling team, coaching, goaltending, and management. It's never the team as a whole,. Tho I don't usually allow excuses such as scheduling and injuries, the rangers have a case to play that card a bit.

They could clearly be playing consistent hockey by now, I'm not even using it as an excuse, I'm just saying I won't write them off because they had a uniquely difficult start to the season with many factors out of the team's control at play.
They will eventually need to start turning it on, though.
I cant believe some of the stuff Im reading that in the media that is questioning whether or not PK should be on the Canadian Olympic roster??!!! It would be insane to leave him off of the team.
On that note, I'm looking forward to the Canadians putting that gold medal around their neck in Sochi.

OH FUCK! DID THEY ANNOUNCE THE TEAM??? I've been under a rock lately as far as Olympic stuff goes.
People who say PK shouldn't be on team Canada, have not watched him play a game over the last 2 seasons, or are just plain racists. There I said it! And if they're not racist and have watched him play, they don't know hockey and can equally be dismissed.

No, they haven't announced anything yet (January I believe), but there has been all kinds of speculation/media banter about PK playing on the Olympic team. I couldnt agree with you more...the guy is unreal. A) he should be on Team Canada and B) you guys should trade him to the leafs for Liles.. :0
This site has the projected rosters for the Olympics. Sweden looks like they could be a tough team to play. Im hoping for a Canada vs. Murrica rematch though.

Russia will be in the Gold Medal game, I can almost guarantee you hat. Ovi's playing like a man possessed, and it's got a lot to do with the Olympics. Do not forget about those pesky ruskies!
There's a line. Thornton went a bit too far across it.
Though, it's a little bit understandable some action needed to be taken. The Penguins are a bunch of b*tches.
This is hockey, when action needs to be taken, you chase a guy down, call him out, drop the gloves and punch each other in the head. And if the guy won't do that, you talk sh*t to him, face wash him and hit him into the boards until he gets fed up and does it.
You don't trip and attack someone from behind.
It was a bush league play and should not be defended at all, I don't care who it happened to. Orpik isn't a choir boy, he dances around that line of legality quite often, but there's a difference between trying to put a hurting on an opponent's best player with a big hit and trying to injure a player.
Thorton should not be allowed to play again... ever. You just don't do that. It's unacceptable.
Todd Bertuzzi is in the NHL, so don't get your hopes up.
I know, and I just don't understand. I'm not getting my hopes up. He plays for Boston, he's not going to get more than probably 10 games. Should get at least 20.

I think he gets more than 10 games, but I'm biased.

I really think he will get 20. They gave Neill 5 and what Thorton did was much worse and after the whistle. One thing to get caught up during a play, another to do it after the whistle and smoke him on a non-hockey play.

I agree, reading a little on Orpiks condition now, I almost feel we could see more than 20. This could be a turning point. Anything fron10 and under would have already been handed out. The fact that it's been 2 days now speaks volumes, as does the fact Orpik says he cannot remember anything after the Anthem.
I hope he gets 20, I really do. I just think he plays for a big market, he's a popular player, he's won 2(?) cups. I dunno. I don't think he should ever play again.

I wonder if the Crawford injury takes him out of contention. Supposed to be three weeks but should be be naming the rosters probably shortly after that time frame.

He's got an outside shot at the 3rd, but the injury kinda puts more doubt on it
Injury should not really impact it. He was not the front runner anyway, but would be a solid 3rd. As a Hawks fan though, I would love for him to be left off the roster to rest and recover. Our team will have way too many people in the Olympics as it is.

Hawks fan here too. I would rather him rest. The late playoffs meant for a shorter offseason. Let him rest up for the playoff run. I actually have confidence in Rantaa in the meantime.

Same here. Khabihowever it is spelled was a huge mistake to bring back. He was let go because he was a liability before. 4 years later, it is worse than before. Rantaa seems like a great #2. Wish we could have kept Niemi, but glad he got his shot. Keeping him would have hurt long term.
New salary cap numbers mean signing Kane and Sharp should be no problem though! Happy day on that front.

Raanta looked good again last night. I know its not hard to be confident in net when your team scores the first five goals of the game but asuming Crawford comes back 100% for the stretch run, its great to see this kid get some extended work now in the event we do need him then.
When Ovie wants to play hard, he is hands down the best. You can argue Crosby all you want, and he is a magician with his stick, but someone can clean his clock pretty good without a supporting cast. Ovie is a physical freak who has close to the hands of Crosby but significantly more power. If Washington had a better supporting cast and coach, they would be unstoppable. I just feel he takes games off sometimes.

Everything here is correct. My hope is that this isn't Ovie "turning it on" in prep for his hometown Olympics, and the jets run dry post-break.

Unfortunately, I think this may be the case. I would not bet against this being his last year in the NHL, especially if Russia wins gold in the Olympics. He can make almost as much in the KHL, and he will be a national hero over there. Plus, he only really has 1 more Olympic cycle in him so it is not a matter of continuing to play the best competition. He has previously expressed interest in going back, so it is not outside the realm of possibility.
Either way, I bet after the Olympics, he will be less than motivated at best.
