You misunderstand me. I am aware of the parable of the Emperor's New Clothes. I fail to understand what your reference to that parable has to do with Sigur Ros, which is a band that I like. This parable is also not a band that I like, so regardless of anything else it is irrelevant to this thread.
If you would like to post the name of a band that I like, please do so.
I'm sure you can figure out what I'm trying to say.
Completely irrelevant to your thread but I will share this non the less. One of many reasons I hate most people of my generation I reference said parable often and hardly anyone knows it. I try to explain where the reference comes from and I either get a blank stare or they think I'm talking about that animated llama movie.
Also many people my age don't know who John Henry is
Or the song Pinball Wizard
This post is pretty ridiculous: a) everybody knows the parable of the emperor's new clothes
b) it makes NO SENSE as applied to Sigur Ros. I get what you're TRYING to say, but to say that just because you don't like a certain band, the only reason everybody else likes a band is only because everybody else already likes them is an asinine, circular, illogical point.
c) you really "hate" people of your generation just because they don't get a half-thought-out, barely (if at all) apropos reference? Maybe the problem is with you and your reference, not everybody else.
But that's all I'll say on the matter in this thread; I don't want to take this thread off-topic.

The Kinks
Wow, harsh.
I don't believe I am the first one to use The Emperor's New Cloths to describe the popularity of artwork and whether or not you think it applies to Sigur Ros you can't argue that there are many people who will feign approval of a piece of art because of a group consensus.

It really wasn't harsh at all. Despite your rant about other fellows in "your generation," your allusion works so poorly in this instance you might as well be talking about a llama movie. First, it's moronic to ascribe some sort of "group consensus" to a band most people have never heard of. Second, I think if someone says to a Sigur Ros fan "I'm just not that into this band" most Sigur Ros fans would likely say something along the lines of "ya, they have a pretty niche appeal." In fact, I find it almost impossible to imagine that anyone who knows you and your completely linear taste in music would ever suggest Sigur Ros as something you might like.
More broadly, I think this parable is less applicable to the modern music landscape than ever. Music criticism has literally never been as widespread and robust as it is right now; there is always someone who will "bravely" criticize an artist's body of work. Maybe, on occasion, a song or artist will gain noteriety for a work faster than critical analysis can be ascribed to it. Cee Lo's "Quack You" comes to mind. Everyone had heard that song ten times before anyone bothered to point out it wasn't actually that good. But that has more to do with the speed at which information and ideas spread than any sort of "group consensus."
Can.
Ok I'm sorry, I get it some people actually like Sigur Ros. I wasn't trying to say otherwise. There are also people who act like they like them to impress people.
I disagree the parable is less applicable, in the internet world where showing off what you are listening to in real time it is more applicable than ever. We all act like we like(or don't like)a band more than we do to affect how people think of us. If you claim you don't do this you are not being truthful.
I think my use of the parable was taken a little too literally.
I'll go back to my linear music tastes and shut up.
