Wow, I believe it's safe to say that no act is safe in this thread. I thought MMJ may go unscathed. This is fun. And it's funny, that 2007 Lips show was my favorite Roo show of all time until Sir Paul this year. To each their own.
For fans of the band, it's an interesting change of mood and definitely worth the experience. For people not very familiar with the band, I think the confetti-drenched party of their old show would generally be a better introduction to the band due to the pure happiness and energy. Now it's more of a dark, bleak atmosphere and significantly less sensory overload.
FWIW, the Lips just changed their live show this year and it is now toned down a good bit. No more space bubble, confetti cannons, dancing creatures on stage, and so forth.
Thank God. When I saw them at Bonnaroo in 2003 the people in costumes, videos, "random" singalongs, confetti, hand puppets, etc. was all only about a year old. Saw them again in 2005 and 2007 and it was the same damn show, only ZOMG HAMSTER BALL11. The antics and gimmicks grew so stale. I'm seeing them again in a couple weeks and I cannot wait to see the new material live without all the goofy bells and whistles to keep the Howdy Doodats and Hoopleheads entertained.
They were definitely way past due to change up their live show, I agree.
Daaaang! With one post, you crushed my & Mayo's hearts re: The National & The Smiths...then you stomped on the pieces w/the Van Morrison diss? *sigh*
Just keeping it honest! I really don't get The National or The Smiths. Those are just my personal opinions and I don't think it reflects negatively on someone if they love those bands. Van Morrison is unquestionably talented but he just doesn't do it for me though.
Oh, I was just bustin' your chops, my friend! You know Mayo & I think you rock, so you'd never be pilloried by us!
I find it interesting how certain "types" of bands whose lyrics are more introspective/borderline morose or whose music is predominantly in a minor key are adored by some people yet disregarded by others who seem like those bands would be the perfect soundtrack for their lives, ya know? I'm not saying YOU personally, just in general... It's like when a music service suggests bands you might like based on other music. It's been my experience that most fans of The National also like Wilco, The Decemberists or other cerebrally stimulating acts and while bands like The Smiths & The Cure attract fans who are brooding souls in need of copious amounts of sunlight. Just my two cents' worth, of course.
