maybe because I don't have the nostalgia factor or because I never went through the 90s grunge music phase (save for a few bigger names), but every time I listen to the new album I just... not for me.
They're just another modern rock band, can't seem to find anything that stands out about them to me.
I like Tame Impala, but they're definitely a bit overrated on Inforoo. People are also in denial about how big/popular they are(n't). I can't believe some folks actually thought they might be big enough to headline next year.
The first 5 seconds of "This Charming Man" should be enough to make anyone a lifelong Smiths fan.
I agree with both of these statements.
I'd listened to "This Charming Man" a hundred times and always loved it, but a couple years ago I threw it on and was shocked to find myself teary-eyed due to those first five seconds of the song. It's so perfect.

For sure, Tame Impala and MMJ both suffer from this. I think both are fine rock bands, but they're nowhere near as popular outside of inforoo.

You realize that an entire world exists outside of this forum, right?

....that's the point
Maybe you misunderstood, but both myself and the person I was replying to are saying that the band(s) in question are not as popular in the general population as they are on inforoo, and that insular popularity on the board makes them seem "bigger" than they are.

I believe the point she was making is that the percentage of the general public that considers themselves fans of Tame Impala (or MMJ) is notably smaller than the percentage of the people on this forum who consider themselves fans of Tame Impala (or MMJ).
I mean I get what you're saying but I also felt like you were inferring that they aren't that big outside of this corner of the Internet and that's just false.

They're pretty big, but not big enough to be in the headliner discussion for 2016. For comparison, bands like Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, and Arctic Monkeys were much bigger names when they last played, and yet they were 5th, 7th, and 9th on the bill.

Dude no one's even discussing headliners though. I think the original sentiment is, "they're just another modern rock band", and that's so far off track.

It's an opinion, I'm sure you hold some as well. I see nothing about the music that Tame Impala makes that stands out as above the rest. Like I said, I think they're a fine rock band, but I don't see any WOW in them.

I guess my problem is when you lump them with random "modern rock bands", I'm puzzled to how one couldn't see that Tame has much more to offer than someone like Royal Blood (a straight up modern, butt-rock band). At least brand them a psychedelic rock act, please. I mean you're right in that we all have opinions, some are just more wrong than others.

You're seriously going to bag on me for not liking Tame Impala when there's people in this thread outwardly saying The Smiths suck? I used modern rock as an all-encompassing term. btw.
I mean, I get it, you love Tame Impala. There's better battles to fight.
Random, but The Red Sox use "Atlas" as house music at Fenway. I've heard it, and LCD Soundsystem's "Dance Yrself Clean", multiple times at games, and realize I'm the only one who's super excited about it.
The Smiths, Bjork, and Radiohead. They all fall in my "meh" category.
You're still young, you should be excited about how much your appreciation of certain music will grow over the next ten years.
Not even trying to be a dick, when I was 22 I hated Radiohead (I thought Kid A was an attempt to make the fans praising it look like dumbasses and I wasn't going to fall for that shit) and had never even listened to The Smiths.
Having said that The Smiths are a pretty polarizing band, which is odd for a band that cranked out more pop masterpieces than any other band in its decade. I'm thinking people either love Morrissey's lyrics and vocals or hate them, and that's the deciding factor.
