So they can headliner Bonnaroo, but not Jazzfest or Midtown Music? The southeast don't give nowhere near as many Quacks about Phoenix as Cali and the notheast. Coachella gambled with 'em...banking that their new album would be a huge success everywhere and it wasn't. Maybe after the next album, guys.

Maybe it's just the area that I'm in, but Phoenix just seems like a really cheap and forced headliner. I don't even know too many people that actually give a shiz about them. Most people just have a really neutral opinion of them. Seems like they're really only sought after because of some other french duo that I can't remember the name of. Great in terms of pre-headliners or late night which, but if they're headliners I just don't see why (regardless of how festivals are billing them). I don't know who to guess at this point, but if I was to try, I would say that Foo Fighters would be one of them. They have an album coming out next year, probably right on cue. Tool also has another one supposedly coming next year as well. I'd put the Foo's over them since they have yet to play the festival, and I don't know if they would have two modern hard rock headliners.
I honestly don't get the deal with Phoenix. I always was under the impression they had cred because of the Daft Punk connection. Yes I own Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, and yeah its a good record, but not awe inspiring wow these guys are the next big thing good. I keep my mouth shut though because people seem to adore them. At best I find it to be decent pop rock with a unique stylistic twist, with the songs themselves just being alright.

I feel as though Phoenix is currently one of those bands that has earned a right to headline a festival, but doesn't have that extra spark that excites people when they see them billed on top. Bonnaroo would much rather have names that draws in crowds (and subsequently money). Phoenix in the Bjork spot makes the most sense to me unless they magically become talked about, which I don't see happening. Instead of bringing in an iffy headliner the year after Macca, you have to go with strong top billing IMO.

What's everyone's "worst-case scenario" realistic headliners? I feel like mine would look like U2 - Muse - Widespread Panic. I'd be disappointed with that considering all the alernatives, but at the same time, I could get a kick out of U2 and Muse. Know what I mean?
Does anyone think this could finally be mmj's year to headline? They're recording a new album in October and they always play the fest after a new album comes out (since the fest has begun) or will they be locked into number 4 or 5?
