Security over all were unpleasant this year. Last year I talked to a lot of real sweet people in security/safety shirts. This year every single one of them was an overt Hippy Hater. It was really too bad...
I dealt with the portolets, I dealt with the mud/ponds all over the place, I dealt with the weather. Security was what brought the vibes down for me. Watching the Hackensaw Boys, there were these girls walking around with a blow-up spongebob character on a bamboo pole. They were spritzing the crowd with water, and being very careful not to hit anyone with her pole. Well, apparently they got too close to the front and a security guy started chasing them. He caught them right behind me, and started taking it apart. They said they needed it for a friend with ms or something to find them, and he said they might hit someone with it, so they couldn't have it. Then he proceeds to hit me with it (not intentionally, but still). She pointed it out, he looked at me, then went back to what he was doing. Not even an apologetic look for hitting me, let alone an actual apology. He walked back to the front of the stage and snapped the pole in half (big tough guy). I know this is small but this is the vibe I got from security the whole weekend, and it just bugged me to no end. And I hate to complain because there was so much great music and so many great people, so I'm just going to stop now.

there were several "levels" of the security people -- the "yellow shirts" had ZERO training and most of them couldn't even answer basic questions like "how do I get to _______". The purple shirts were the best -- trained, experienced, and all hired thru a company in New Orleans (they'd worked a Mardi Gras or more) -- I found them to be chill, respectful, and very helpful - -the pity was that there weren't more of them.
I haven't been to any other Bonnaroos, but I have been to a few other festivals (obviously much smaller). But, the thing I like the best about these festivals is the great vibes and positive attitudes. Unfortunately, I was completely dissappointed upon arriving to Bonnaroo. I know for sure that I will NEVER return to that place. I would much rather go to a much smaller, happier place. I can deal with the weather, the mud, the rain. All of that comes with camping, but I can't deal with smiling at people and saying hello, only to get a look like I'm the antichrist or something. I mean, what is so bad about saying hello and giving a smile to someone I don't know? Does that really make me strange? Anyplace else that I've ever been has not been like Bonnnaroo. It was DEFINITELY TOO BIG, and I learned my lesson. Don't get me wrong, I had a good time. But, my good time was kept between me and my friends because there were very few friendly and fun people to share it with.
And, yes, the tents were too close together. And, at night, we wanted to dance around outside the tents, but the glaring lights dimmed our glow sticks.
It was definitely not worth the money, nor the long trip down. I won't go so far to say I wish I had never gone, but if it weren't for my fabulous neighbors and loving and fun girlfriends, I would've left on Friday.
This was my first roo and I must say I had the greatest of times. Luckily for me we were traveling with a few roo veterans and I did my roo research so we were really well prepared and fortunately didn't fall in to any mishaps. I can understand that it probably was a little too big. I did run into a couple of jerks but i think i met so many more great friendly people. It also seems to me the people that worked directly for bonnaroo (the ones who had been there for weeks preparing) were really nice and actually cared. We were camped right by the trash cans and everyday when the people from clean vibes came by they gave us weather updates and other misc info. In appreciation we gave them beer and they were grateful. I think the event staff that was the problem was CSC security. THEY SUCK!!! We have them at the University of MD for our events and we had a problem with them being too rough with students. they just basically hire anyone and inevitably they get some losers who dont care about anything. I think next year they should have their own security staff and people and the gates. what they could do is find a bunch of people who want to go to the fesitval and they could have them work security and such for one day and in exchange they pay them and then allow them to enjoy the rest of the fesitval as they see fit. I probably volunteer. I'm sure many other nice and decent people would to.
All in all I had a great time and I think they could make some changes but nothing could keep me from coming back next year.
