What song are you most looking forward to hearing from each artist on your planned schedule? For me, I’m a manic tent-hopper, typically splitting sets all day and night, watching a half-hour of most bands but staying for some full sets. Therefore, catching the song I’m most hoping to hear—assuming they play it at all—is tough. In any case, if you choose to play along, please list the song from each artist you’re most eager to hear. Here’s my list for Thursday:
1. Johnnyswim—“Angie.” This husband-wife duo is easy on the ears, and Amanda Sudano is extremely easy on the eyes. (Did you know that she’s Donna Summer’s daughter?)
2. Nicki Bluhm—“Keep It Loose” I was tempted to go with something countrier, like “Stick With Me,” a duet with her husband, or one of the soul belters like “Kill You to Call,” which I hope we get. But I split the difference with the kind of midtempo rootsified-pop song that typifies her. (I know the van series videos went viral, especially “I Can’t Go For That,” and, hey, John Oates is on the farm. Maybe?)
3. The Stepkids—“Legend in My Own Mind” Not sure if Meredith DiMenna will be on hand to supply the vocals, as she has been for many of their shows, but bassist Dan Edinberg delivers an impressive falsetto when he takes over her part.
4. Andrew Duhon—“Too Late” Anything from the excellent new album, The Moorings, stands to be lovely, but fingers crossed for this knee-buckler from Songs I Wrote Before I Knew You.
5. DIIV—“Human” Not sure it matters much here as the drone will be pretty righteous throughout. “Doused” might be the most fun to dance to, but “Human” has the prettiest melody.
6. Milo Greene—“Silent Way” Milo at their dreamiest, which is saying something. So psyched to watch this band layer in these intricate arrangements on a pile of relentlessly stellar songs from their debut.
7. Futurebirds—“Wild Heart” Hoping for this kick-ass Stevie Nicks cover. I’m not as wild about the ‘Birds original material, although “MJB” and “Megachills” will get me where I need to be.
8. J.D. McPherson—“Scratching Circles” Can’t to wait to see this guy. His dedication to pre-’58 is inspiring, and we’ll get most of Signs & Signifiers, but give me this one—an amalgamation of Little Richard, Elvis, and Bobby Blue Bland.
9. Ariel Pink—“Only in My Dreams” Everyone will go nuts when he closes with “Round and Round,” but I want to see how the weirdo pulls off this beauty, if it makes the setlist.
10. Houndmouth—“Penitentiary” Four-part harmonies and rolling Levon-style Americana, a preview of one of the definitive sounds of the weekend.
11. HAIM—“Don’t Save Me” Can’t get enough of this single. Brings back Reagan’s second term. But in a good way.
12. Django Django—“Life’s a Beach” “WOR” might be more handclappy, but not much. This one feels more organic, with the ‘60’s garage-psych harmonies and Eastern-leaning guitar figures. Live? Bring it.
13. Wake Owl—“Gold” Every song on last year’s EP is gorgeous. I’ll vote for this witchy indie-folk beauty.
14. Purity Ring—“Ungirthed” Can’t wait to see Corin Rodweenie play that lightbulb-tree, but especially fascinated to hear how Megan James sings tunes like this and “Cartographist” live.
15. Japandroids—“Younger Us” I’m typically lukewarm on garage-y duos—notice I’m skipping Deap Vally—but I’ll make an exception for songs this great. I heart Celebration Rock from start to finish, so I hope they play the whole record. Plus “Young Hearts Spark Fire.”
16. Father John Misty—“Now I’m Learning to Love the War” The only Thursday set I have scheduled from start to finish; I’ll be damned if I’m going to miss a quarter-note of one of last year’s most nearly-perfect records. FJM knows how to sell his songs with his actor’s approach to singing, and this song offers some of his best lyrics.
17. alt-j—“Fitzpleasure” Of course, "Tessellate" is the ringer, the kind of song U2 would kill to end an album with, but the opening a cappela-exercise of "Fitzpleasure" should tickle the crowd, while the deranged-elf vocals afterwards will seal the deal. Throughout, there are some remarkably meticulous and musical moments that will be a feat to pull off live.
18. Allen Stone—“Figure It Out” Midnight with Allen Stone? Nice. The punchier stuff, like “Sleep” will be a kick, but “Figure It Out” is Stone at his most impressive, absorbing the best of Marvin and Stevie into this buttery-smoove, well-written and impressively-sung melody.
19. Killer Mike—“Reagan” “Big Beast” will be the banger, but “Reagan” is the most captivating, a severe pole-axing that lays waste to Reagan, but doesn’t spare Obama, either. A searing El-P collage behind lines like, “Why did Reagan and Obama both go after Qaddafi/We invaded sovereign soil, going after oil/Taking countries is a hobby paid for by the oil lobby/Same as in Iraq, and Afghanistan/And Ahmadinejad say they coming for Iran.”
20. The Vaccines—“Norgaard” One of the real genius scheduling moves of the weekend. What did you expect from the Vaccines? Every song is leather-jacket cool, even the swooners like “A Lack of Understanding,” but the Ramones-style 1:39 of “Norgaard” is both nostalgic and timeless rock romance.
21. ALO—“Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down” I’m not inordinately impressed with this band. Like so many jam-friendly bands, no one in the band can sing. I doubt if Jack Johnson shows up. Instead, the special guests are probably Nicki Bluhm and Ryan Montbleau, which is nothing to sneeze at, so I’ll stick around to see what develops.

Friday:
1. Trixie Whitley—“Breathe You in My Dreams” I had a devil of a time choosing between Trixie (the most puzzling Which Stage booking of the weekend) and seeing Alanna Royale in the Miller Lite Lounge. Ultimately, I went with Trixie, hoping she’s performing solo on piano and guitar.
2. Bernhoft—“Cmon Talk” The one-man loop-master soul-daddy guitar slinger. Sure, this is the Ellen-endorsed hit, but a little of this guy will go a long way with me, and this is his catchiest song.
3. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue—“Hurricane Season” The more mainstream rock material on For True is fine, but I hope for plenty of instrumental cuts like this one from 2010’s Backatown.
4. Bombino—“Amidinine” I won’t be able to spend a ton of time at this show, but Nomad is a great album. Any track will do—just want to watch this guy play and replicate that dusty guitar tone.
5. Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit—“Danko/Manuel” Isbell is a terrific writer and vocalist, and his solo tunes like “Alabama Pines” (and ace covers like “Heart on a String”) will go down easy, but I’m holding out for his Drive-By Truckers weepers, like this beauty from Decoration Day.
6. Rayland Baxter—“The Woman for Me” So many amazing up-and-coming singer-songwriters on the farm this year, many I have to miss, regrettably. But I have to clear out some space for this one. Last year’s Feathers & Fishhooks is stuffed with great songs.
7. Charli XCX—“You – Ha Ha Ha” I’m not completely convinced that Charli is a great live performer, but I’m willing to spend some time with her, hopefully as she sings this one, my favorite track from True Romance.
8. Fatoumata Diawara—“Sowa” Gorgeous, elegant music—I think this will be one of the most satisfying experiences of the day. 2011’s Fatou is uniformly excellent.
9. Of Monsters and Men—“Six Weeks” I couldn’t bring myself to fall in love with My Head is an Animal, but this is definitely the summer to see this band or at least to watch the crowd (30K at the Which?) lose their minds to “Little Talk.”
10. Glen Hansard—“The Auld Triangle” A very powerful performer who builds a rapturous bond with audiences. His latest album is great, so bring on those tunes, but he’s best in full busker mode, pulling out covers—I’m praying for Springsteen’s “Drive All Night”—but participating in this traditional Irish singalong is a heart-swelling experience.
11. Earl Sweatshirt—“Chum” If Tyler is in tow, great. Even better if Earl can manage to replicate the laconic flow on these records rather than throw the verses away with hypeman disorder. That would be as hard as Vince Carter’s knee-cartilage is.
12. Amadou & Mariam—“Dougou Badia” They have a tremendous body of work to draw from, so it’ll just be a kick to be in their presence for a while. Inspiring, deeply musical duo—this will be a mesmerizing, joyful set.
. Foals—“This Orient” Booking Foals and Grizzly Bear at the same time is one of this year’s rudest scheduling moves. I’m really hoping to stay long enough to swoon through “Spanish Sahara,” but “This Orient” is the one that got Foals’ hook into me in the first place.
14. Grizzly Bear—“Half Gate” If I had the keys to the kingdom, I’d have Michael McDonald show up for “While You Wait for the Others.” Short of that, I’ll settle for a version of “Half Gate” (or “Knife” or “Ready, Able” or any number of other sublime cuts).
15. Big K.R.I.T.—“No Wheaties” Tough to reconcile KRIT’s #yolo tunes like “Boobie Miles” and his dumb misogynjoyable songs like “What U Mean.” I’d like to be there for “Country Sh*t,” of course, just to see the crowd bounce, but I also hope to here this one with its fresh Kenny “O” G lite-jazz sample.
16. John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension—“Hijacked” I don’t care what he plays; I just want to lay eyes on the legend for a while, even though I know I’m missing the first part of Wilco to do so. I don’t expect him to play Miles classics, but I’d take a frenetic exercise like this one from 1992 that lets Johnny Mac rip with incredible velocity.
17. Wilco—“One Sunday Morning” Their setlist will be genius as always, but given a choice, I’d lean on Sky Blue Sky and the St. Louis tunes (“Casino Queen,” “Heavy Metal Drummer”). Better yet, an Uncle Tupelo tune or two although even “New Madrid” is a long shot these days. But I’ll be weak-kneed if we get this epic album-closing beauty from The Whole Love.
18. Jim James—“Changing World” One of my yet-to-be-decided dilemmas is whether to head to the tents after Wilco to catch Jim James (and then The xx at the Which) or to just say put, stake my claim, and get psyched about Paul, about whom I’ll be a nervous wreck. If I do see Yimmy, I hope he plays his Monsters of Folk songs or this one from the New Multitudes album with Jay Farrar—hey! It’s Uncle Tupelo night!
19. The xx—“VCR” I saw them in 2010 in That Tent on Thursday night. Were you there? They sounded really cool. The Which is another ballgame, right before McCartney. I’ll try to give them my attention, but it won’t be easy.
20. Paul McCartney—“Here There and Everywhere” Jesus. Trying to pick a single McCartney song is like trying to isolate my favorite pint of blood in my heart. I’ve never seen him. This will be a culmination, a fulfillment, a celebration. Gun to my head, I’d pick “She’s Leaving Home,” but since I’m sharing this as a Spotify playlist, I’ll pick this one, a Paul song so perfect even John later copped to loving it.
21. Wu-Tang Clan—“Do You Really (Thang Thang)” Following Paul McCartney is a tough assignment, but these guys ain’t nothin’ to quack with. The Wu vs. ZZ Top conflict stings, so I’m doing the Wu for the first hour, and while I’m pumped for 36 Chambers tracks as much as the next guy—bring out John Oates for “M-E-T-H-O-D Man”!—I’m pulling for this long shot from the feloniously underrated The W. Too bad the ODB hologram isn’t ready yet, but, you know, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” anyway.
22. ZZ Top—“Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers” Catching the last hour or these boys, and why aren’t they in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yet? The last half hour will be hits-heavy, and the Wu to ZZ Top migration will be quite a herd. “Tush,” “Legs,” “La Grange,” “Sharp Dressed Man”—bring it on. I’d be even more thrilled with this rocker from 1973, the best-ever interplay between Gibbons’ and Hill’s vocals. Completes a Friday-night hat-trick for the ages.
23. Pretty Lights—“Finally Moving” Obviously, from my pick here, I’m a novice Pretty Lights fan, and while I’m curious to check out the performance, I’m holding on for dear life for Animal Collective.

I can only catch half of the Local Natives show and after that I work in the Comedy Tent from 3-9. I also have work from 3-9 on Saturday but before that I'm hoping to check out Ranch Ghost and JEFF the Brotherhood or PB Lovesicle
