I really love the Top 10 Songs thread. I found allot of really good tunes I'd never heard as well as some artists who weren't on my radar. Because just about every band does a cover song and also as a sort of homage to that thread started by , I want to start a thread to find out what you folks think are some of the best covers out there. What follows are 10 of my favorite covers, in no particular order (except for #1), that spring to mind: #1. Negativland - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2) The Residents - Jambalaya (Hank Williams Sr.) **quacking AMAZING!! Not weird nightmare music, I promise. Punch Brothers - Kid A (Radiohead) Devo - Head Like a Hole (NINe Inch Nails) Sonic Youth - Superstar (Originally credited to Delaney & Bonnie and Friends it was made famous by The Carpenters) Emmylou Harris - Every Grain of Sand (Bob Dylan) John Zorn - The Big Gundown (Ennio Marricone) Mongo Santamaria - Smooth Operator (Sade) Bjork and PJ Harvey - Satisfaction (Rolling Stones) Polyphonic Spree - Lithium (Nirvana) **I can't find a suitable sounding live performance, studio version is good but to see them do it live melts faces.
Finding 10 exceptional covers was tough for me. If you can't think of 10 (and if you're so inclined) just post the ones that move ya! EDIT: the video links posted were posted for the song only. Not the fan videos created for them. Some are shit.

I don't really have anything to add other than remember all those Punk Goes ___________ albums that came out in like the early to mid 2000's? God those had some awful f*cking songs.
For whatever reason I was super into the Pennywise cover of Stand By Me among many other terrible cover songs. Some day I'd love to see a "Terrible music you were into in high school" thread.

Any top 10 list of covers that doesn't include this is wrong.
F-ing EPIC. I think the first time I saw this I just sat in front of the tv w/ my mouth hanging open. If I were trent reznor I would have died of happiness after that!

Oh my God. I forgot Me First and the Gimme Gimmes ever existed. This is exactly why we need that thread idea I mentioned. I specifically remember my older brother making a "Punk Covers" CD when we got a CD burner in like 2001 and I must've listened to this song like 500 times in 7th grade.

I love this thread.
Dave Maynar, I totally agree, except that I think Johnny Cash spanked that song and made it his own, so it's not even Trent Reznor/NIN's song anymore, so I'm going to leave it off my list.

I'm omitting the Polyphonic Spree version of Lithium only because it was on monkybunney's list. That is most definitely one of my favorite covers, though.
Electric Six - Rubberband Man (The Spinners) (This might be my number one. The video is great because it is actually the Spinners with the Electric Six version dubbed over it.)
And while it's not in my personal top ten, this is for Josh:

Extralovin' for the Mongo Santamaria version of Smooth Operator!

I feel like too many of the covers people are mentioning are just notable for the shock value. Even Cash's Hurt, which is amazing, has the slight stink of of Rick Rubin making some old dude do an album of pop covers for the $$$. The really great covers are ones like Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You that you forget are even covers in the first place. Hendrix's Watchtower should be on every list too.

Just make a list, Crankypants.
Although Hendrdix's Watchtower statement is correct.

Here are some favorites that haven't been mentioned:
Dinosaur Jr - Just Like Heaven (The Cure) Lucero - Kiss the Bottle (Jawbreaker) Uncle Tupelo - I Wanna Be Your Dog (Stooges) Melvins - Going Blind (Kiss) Built to Spill - Cortez the Killer (Neil Young) Divine Fits - Shivers (Rowland S. Howard....it was played by Boys Next Door and the Birthday Party)
Any top 10 list of covers that doesn't include this is wrong.
Yeah that one definitely is beautiful. The only reason I didn't include it was because it was too obvious and I assume everyone has heard it. In the opposite direction, excepting the Punk Goes ______ mentioned by Longtime and Frequent Poster, I submit Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth Criminal (Micheal Jackson) as one of the worst covers ever. I'm a little surprised Quite Riot hasn't been invoked yet.
There's an obscure top ten. This is the non-obscure top ten.
1. Johnny Cash - Hurt (NIN) 2. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan) 3. Aretha Franklin - Respect (Otis Redding) 4. Talking Heads - Take Me to the River (Al Green) 5. Ike and Tina Turner - Proud Mary (CCR) 6. Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Oasis) 7. White Stripes - Jolene (Dolly Parton) 8. Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane (Lou Reed) 9. Santana - Black Magic Woman (Fleetwood Mac) 10. Pretenders - Stop Your Sobbing (Kinks)

Honorable Mention
