I think the best trick for me to was a water backpack. In previous years I kept having to leave my spot to rehydrate, but carrying one of these with me maximized the amount of time I got to spend seeing full sets. It may seem lame; but that heat will sap you, and ruin your chances of maximizing the amount of bands you see.

I've never counted... but I kind of want to go back and try.
2007- was not prepared for Roo nearly enough, so not a lot.... 2008- I saw a lot of shows, maybe my most? Probably not, I saw more full shows than partial shows. 2009- Tent flipped on its side in the rain Thursday night, so it was a rough weekend- not as many as I could have 2010- I saw a lot. Maybe my most. 2011- Had to miss Thursday/early Friday for school, so not my most. 2012- I saw a lot, Probably my most
EDIT: I just went through and counted, based on schedules I could find. It looks like last year was my most, with 28 (including the R. Kelly sing-a-long as a show).

I know that I've counted each year how many shows I plan to see and then how many I end up seeing, but I've forgotten the numbers now. Thankfully I was able to dig up my books for the past 4 years and have tallied my experiences.
2009: 22 shows, 19 full sets and 3 partials. I didn't see any headliners that year, or anything on the What Stage for that matter. And the partials were at the least half sets. 2010: 26 shows, 19 full sets and 7 partials. Stevie Wonder, John Fogerty and Tenacious D brought me to the What Stage for the first time. I moved around a little bit more that year. 2011: 29 shows, 19 full sets and 10 partials. I saw a record number of shows on Thursday that year with 2 partials and 7 full sets to start off the weekend. 2012: 29 shows, 17 full sets and 12 partials. I was set to break my record from 2011 but I ate some bad vendor food on Thursday and missed three shows that I had planned to see. In more than half of the partial shows I only missed about 5 songs of the set.
I'm all about seeing as much music as I can while I'm at Bonnaroo, but overall you have to do what is comfortable for you as an individual. I take tons of supplies into Centeroo and usually stay there from noon til 3 or 4 in the morning, but it's worth realizing when you are too tired to go on and get rest for the next day. Unless of course it's Sunday, but this is the first year that I'm genuinely interested in staying for all of the Sunday Headliner.
Last year I saw way less bands then I thought I was going to be able to..any tips for catching the maximum amount of sets?
This will be my 10th year, and it seems like i catch slightly more each year. Probably didn't catch more than 20 the first couple years, but that was partly because sets averaged 30-60 minutes longer, and thursdays weren't nearly as big of a deal as they are now. Last year was the most I've seen at 35 shows, but alot of those were at the sonic stage where the sets are an hour long.
Best advice I can give was said by Silence. Also i'll echo luvdatroo, go by your schedule, not your friends. I have skipped quite a few shows that I now regret just because I didn't want to split from the group. You'll meet new friends so don't be afraid to go solo. And it helps to have a friend in handicapped or other parking close to centeroo. Saved me a 15 minute walk everytime I needed something from camp. Lastly, pace yourself with the alcohol and other goodies. Sure they can enhance the experience, but too much will cause you to see less shows and ruin the ones you never thought of missing.

Saw 40 last year. For maximum enjoyment factor, I think its best to see the tail end of sets from bands that don't have a ton of material and see the first parts of bands you're more familiar with.
