I've been considering the ditch. Now that football season is over it seems like a complete waste of money. I do like to catch the occasional news broadcast.
When I moved into a new apartment I didn't order Cable. I just use Netflix/YouTube. Saving the money is great, and I watch things that I'm actually learning something from. If I want to watch a sporting event I go to a bar, or to a friend's house. My girlfriend also has Apple TV. She loves it; no complaints.
When I go to my mom's or sister's house all they watch are reality shows, and I feel like it melts my brain. I either get sucked in or disgusted. Usually both.
Definitely just do the switch, and thank me later.
EDIT: I have an Xfinity.com / HBOgo.com account (long story that's neither here nor there), so if anyone who is switching over wants it, you are welcome to it. A few people on here already use it.
We ditched cable 3 years ago and haven't looked back. We have an antenna and pick up over 20 channels - 7 local channels, 4 weather channels, 3 different PBS stations, 2 music video channels (that actually play music videos all day), 1 movie channel, 1 vintage sitcom channel, 1 outdoor channel, 1 local sports channel, and 1 radio station (no picture). We watch movies on our computers on Amazon Instant (Prime), catch up on tv shows on the networks' websites, and rent Redbox movies from time to time. We've been thinking about doing something like Netflix or Hulu, but it's not something we really need right now.
The only thing we miss is having ESPN to watch Alabama football (since they didn't show them on CBS this year), but we just go watch the games with friends. At first we missed the Daily Show and news shows, but found that we can watch all that online, and also Sunday morning is pretty much nothing but news shows on the networks. One of the PBS stations plays kid shows all day until like 7pm so the kids almost always have something to watch.

I ditched a few months back. Just about every channel I watch has an app(A&E, History, Discovery) that keeps pretty up to date. Like everyone said sports, but its easy enough to get a Internet full season package or go somewhere to watch. I've become a lot less dependant which I enjoy, I still see all i need to but now I don't fall victim to time wasters like day long Law and Order marathons or watching a movie I have seen dozens of times.
A lot of sporting events I think I could pull off through just going out - I could go to the bar to watch basketball games when I want, though March Madness gives me pause. I tend to spend the first two weekends of the tournament watching basketball from noon until midnight, and I really don't want to have to hang out in a bar for 48 hours over 4 days. Though I suppose they offer a package to watch all the games online, right?
Then drop it after March Madness....................

I got rid of cable and internet at home about a year ago. When longer running sporting events are on it makes it tough to keep up. Like I didnt watch much of the world series this year. Normally I watch every second.
But I have a netflix account with dvds and I live about two blocks from a couple of redbox locations. Honestly half the time I'm not home enough or I'm multitasking enough that it doesnt matter what's on because I'm barely watching.
It's not that big of a loss and when you do see tv even the ads will be interesting.

Just call and talk them down on price. We were going to cancel our cable when our third roommate moved out and they ended up cutting the price in half and throwing in HBO, which was pretty worth it. If you're really ready to cancel you'll probably end up with a reasonable deal. Netflix just doesn't get the job done for me.

I haven't done it yet but would likely get all that I currently want from a Netflix account and a hulu plus account. I watch shows but never live anymore. Usually catch things on DVD or when they air on channels.
I'd have to find a way to get my HBO shows. I guess torrenting could work but I'm hoping they do an HBO GO option for non-cable subscribers.

Scroll up and read my post...
lol I did after I posted mine. That'd be a cool option haha. There's no limit on number of people? I know Netflix gives me an error if more than two people on the account are using it at a time. I haven't had an issue with HBO Go like that though.

I haven't had cable for 2 or 3 years now. I can download any show within an hour after it has aired and there are lots of streaming sites for sports. Between that and netflix I can't justify spending $150 a month on internet and when I can pay $50 for internet and still get all the shows I want online. That extra $1200 a year means more concerts or an extra fest for the wife and I.
We cut back a couple of years ago to "broadcast basic" at outplace which is the major networks, multiple PBS, a lot of channels that sell shit (think QVC) and for some strange reason ION. Other than that we use a Roku to stream Netflix and Amazon prime etc.
Hubby thought he was going to have a hard time with the sports withdrawal but it turns out he was watching some stuff he didn't really care about just because it was on.
A colleague of mine put up an antenna this weekend and apparently is drawing almost all the channels I'm paying for. Antenna $45 bucks on Amazon, my cable ~15/month....hmmmm
I haven't had cable at all in the 3 years I've been out of my parent's house/dorm rooms. I have Netflix and the internet so no need really. If there is a game or something that I can't find online then I'll just go to a bar and watch it.

There are plenty of good guides online for "cutting the cord" that include using an antennae and other tips/tricks. I think Reddit has a whole subreddit for it.
I cancelled cable April of last year and not once have missed it. I rely on Hulu Plus and Netflix (I have Amazon Prime, but have never used their streaming options). Paired with Comcast's middle internet option ("best for streaming"), it's $64/month. I don't do much sports, but there is the antennae option listed earlier or the basic cable option which has something like 16 channels. When I was living abroad and was an active baseball fan, I subscribed to MLBtv.com and saw all the games. I do hear that they black out your local games, but it's something else to look into.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Ok weird... is it telling you guys the thread doesn't exist? I searched it again and the link is right. The thread is called Roku vs Cable from May '12 and was started by cdevaney

My friend without cable watches most sports on "FirstRowSports.eu" but they can be spotty and aren't the best quality. Sometimes streams are taken down. it's a good "Last resort" option.
I can't ever get that one to work on a phone/iPad unfortunately. There's a Justin.TV app, I just don't know how much of what I want to watch is going to be available.

cable is a waste of $$$, and as most people have pointed out, the only thing that really sucks is missing out on sports, but on the upside, you'll save a ton, avoid watching bad tv, rewatching movies/shows you've already seen and maybe you'll pick up a new hobby to replace the time spent in front of the tv.
and maybe you'll pick up a new hobby to replace the time spent in front of the tv.
Ha... you can still waste lots of time in front of the TV. Having entire seasons at your fingertips is VERY bad for productivity. The upside is that you're watching shows that you are highly interested in rather than the random TV show or movie repeat that you mentioned...

Another great thing about ditching cable is you aren't subjected to stupid commercials (perfect for young kids). Outside of sports I never see any commercials. That alone was a big qol improvement.

I guess I'm kind of ignorant to all of these sports websites. Are those that have been mentioned free?
I'm fine with going to a bar or to a friends for Wisconsin and Marquette basketball when it's only once or twice a week, but I'm not doing it six times a week during baseball season and I can't bear the thought of not watching the Brewers.
