I would like a mental health forum. I would also like a business/networking forum. I would like both to be private.
Why? I should hope that's obvious. Without getting too personal, I (along with many others on this board, I'm sure) have dealt with various minor mental health issues, most commonly anxiety and depression. Hell, this is even very Bonnaroo relevant as I have often developed severe anxiety in massive crowds like the ones at Bonnaroo. I'd absolutely love to be able to talk about those issues openly and freely with like-minded people on this board, as I think we've attracted a really stellar group of core posters, many of whom I'm sure would have terrific things to add to the discussion, be it experiences personal or professional. As it stands now, I think such a thread is a terrible idea, because I'd rather not get into stuff like that for all the world to see.
Similarly, I'd love to have a place to discuss business/networking opportunities. I'd love to talk about where I work, jobs in my area, and network with many people here. I honestly have lost track of the number of PM conversations I've had with other attorneys on here, or with aspiring law students asking advice. It would be great to have a forum for that, but MANY people aren't comfortable at all intertwining their professional lives with their personal, and would prefer that their vcards and LinkedIn info not be posted on a public message board.
Why is this a bad thing? It's "exclusionary" not to create an elitist area of higher-ups, but rather to foster discussion of a different kind, where people can be more open about sensitive topics.
I haven't been in there in about a year. I remember it pretty clearly. It was the night the Grammys were on and someone said something like "hey surf, word is you are a shizzy poster". I joked back, and stayed in for a little bit then logged off when I wanted to. Then never went back. I realized (or felt like, at the very least) that I wasn't wanted there. That I didn't belong. Did it hurt my feelings? Not really. Its a group of people that I don't belong to, and that's ok. But that isn't this forum. That is something separate.
That sounds like it was probably an RDK comment. He says sh*t like that just to get a rise out of people. He does this to EVERYBODY.
It may have been, now that you mention it, but it doesn't really matter. Id honestly rather not remember who it was so it doesn't effect my opinion of whoever it was because of it. It wasn't a matter of being thin skinned or anything, just didn't feel like I was welcome there, or belonged there at all. So I didn't go back. Id hate for that to be anyone's perception of this board or anyone in it.
because regardless of the cliques that have come together, the people here are all pretty awesome in their individual ways. It is one of the reasons I like this forum so much (even though I get put in my "place" (so to speak) from time to time). Seriously, you guys are quacking awesome, all of you, for different reasons.
Flanzo, you seriously make some great points, almost to the point where you are starting to swing my opinion on the matter. However, I keep going back to the (irrational?) fear that creating private threads will disrupt some of the good things of what we have here. And for what? Well, for some very good reasons IN THEORY and IN SPIRIT. I am personally afraid that it just won't shake out like that and people who would grow to be quite good, productive, quality members of this board but don't because they are unwilling to wade through the PERCEIVED "secret society" labyrinth to break through into the land of inclusion. (I said perceived - and meant it)
One thing is certain. Private threads will change this forum somewhat. For better? For worse? Im glad I don't have to make this decision, and it is left to the mods. I don't envy your position.
Me neither. Personally when I saw the proposal, I didn't think, "Perfect. The fissure begins today." I thought, "Ooh cool idea! That will be a nice addition."

Great post. I hate it when people use solid reason to fistQuack my false logic.
The only argument I have against this is that this is a Bonnaroo forum, not a forum for either of those subjects that you mentioned above. On the other hand, I still would like to connect with people in this community to talk (yes, privately) about kids with life threatening illnesses. My daughter has Leukemia. I have been through a lot and it would make me feel better to make someone else feel better about the process. I wouldn't want that public because there can be some very personal stuff that can surface when talking about that subject.
Im starting to come around, though. The purpose and spirit of what is being talked about are great. I hope, if it comes to fruition, that it works out the way it is being presented by its supporters. If it does, that would be fantastic!

Like I have said multiple times it does not really bother me but I can not believe the mods would open themselves up to the crapstorm it will create for them to deal with. People will start duplicate accounts to get an invite, or try and hack accounts because they think there is privileged info in those threads, and quite honestly I bet it will be less than week before someone name drops a private thread in the public part of the forum just to show their butthole.

Well you're both wrong, because I only brought up the idea to foster paranoia and jealousy, and to enable the cool kids to have their own little private sh*t-talking room where they can air their true feelings. It was my hope that this innocuous-seeming gesture would be the butterfly flapping its wings in Morocco that brings down the house of cards in Portland, OR. Only then would Inforoo fall under my iron grasp.
The whole thing is inherently ridiculous. I tell people they're completely awful to their face, why the hell would I need a private forum for that?

It is a Bonnaroo forum, but I think it goes way beyond that for many people. I pretty steadily participate in the college football and film discussion thread. Neither of which have much to do with Bonnaroo at all.

Whenever someone does this on the main Coachella thread other posters are VERY quick to shut them up. This happens rarely from what I've witnessed.
Just my opinion, and this board is not really run the same way as the Coachella board. I bet it becomes a problem and then administrating the threads will be a headache.

Haha oh Jess. Welcome back.
Ask any pre 2008 person about the "soundboard" and how well that worked out.

You're right, it's not a forum for those subjects. So we should probably eliminate the Other Tent. It's got threads about baseball and the NFL and fashion and sex and food and drinking and everything else. It's not related to Bonnaroo, so away with it.
That's the argument that could be made. "You guys want these other forums, that's not what this place is about." Except that part of what people enjoy here is the sense that it has grown into something larger than just festival discussion. People on this board talk about all kinds of things together, and many members make plans to visit each other independent of Bonnaroo. So to limit the forum to what it used to be, before the community (gah) that developed here existed, is foolish and shortsighted.
After reading everyone's arguments I am tentatively in favor of the type of user generated private discussion threads proposed here. My concern was more of creating an entire forum within a forum that turns the public forum into a desolate wasteland.
Having said that one of my guiding principles in life is unity, and therefore I am suspicious of anything that separates us.
But Jess what you're comparing this to is literally what every person wanting the change is saying it won't be.
It is easy to say that, but I really do not see how this is going to be implemented without feelings getting hurt, and without shenanigans going on. That being said I don't really have a problem with it, I just think people should think through how it is really going to work in practice, not in the idealized world of I want to talk about the lineup rumors without random strangers barging in to ask if Lady Gaga is headlining or not.

We haven't even presented what we will be doing yet so anyone saying "This will happen" or "that will happen" just seems silly. Nothing is set in stone at the moment and I think some people are arguing different things. There are still plenty of people who post as if there are plans for an elite/VIP/invite-only sub forum that will foster all sorts of lineup leaks or be a place to hate on others. That's not the case.

It's just as easy to say that. We're both speculating, but I'm telling you how I will use it while you're telling me how you think everyone is going to use it.

Except I am basing my speculation on what happened last time something like this was tried. That being said you are right we are both speculating, and do you not think it is important to look at consequences both negative and positive?
