What you are voting on here is which festival was better in 2012. Which one you either A) enjoyed most or B) would have preferred to go to. Use whatever reasons you want. Lineup, location, cleanliness, comfort, clean portos, people, just plain preference, ANYTHING
I always have a blast at Voodoo, but was disappointed in the undercard this year. NY&CH was a much better set than RHCP, they both had Jack White, and Metallica at Voodoo was almost KISS-level cheesy in my opinion. I know people hate on DMB, but I will never not enjoy watching Carter Beauford play. Being on the rail for String Cheese was a highlight. Tough call here, but I'm going to lean Hangout.
I go with Voodoo basically because of the cost of doing it versus hangout. We have a free place to stay in Nola. But with hangout we end up dropping $400+ a piece for the condo, supplies, etc. Also Voodoo weather is great, there's moar/better late nite shows, and Halloween in NOLA is the best. I don't care how shitty the lineups look on paper, there is always something going on that is worth my time at this festival and there's always a shitload of late night shows to choose from.
I know Hangout is going to crush Voodoo, but I voted for Voodoo. I attended both festivals, and I simply enjoyed Voodoo more. Voodoo may have had the worst undercard in its history this year, but honestly a lot of the Hangout card wasn't anything to brag about either.
Furthermore, for me in the current touring BNA climate, it is extremely rare for a festival to have three headliners (top three, not counting subheadliners) that I was incredibly psyched for, and had an absolute blast. There is something nice about everyday of the festival building up to what is truly the best show of the night. Although you could be saying "but postie, as weak as the undercard was, that makes this an easy achievement". But in this case the strengths weren't relative, the three headliners really were that good.
I can appreciate King's comments regarding Metallica's cheesiness, although I respectfully disagree. I have a strong emotional attachment to Metallica's music, been rocking them since 5th grade. Although I lost faith somewhere between Napster and St. Anger, to me Death Magnetic was a stunning return to form, while still maintaining positive bluesy type elements from the Load era.
Jack White was of course amazing, and Neil & Crazy Horse were the best set of the weekend. Hell, maybe the best set of music I saw in 2012. In fact any festival with Neil Young and Crazy Horse should pretty much beat any other festival period.
Hangout on the other hand had a significantly weaker top of the ticket, with only Jack White really shining. There was some awesome undercard stuff, namely Umphreys and Cheese, but beyond those two there weren't a lot of memorable sets (to be fair I missed most of Friday, and missed Wilco because of Umphreys, but I also missed most of Friday for Voodoo).
Set and setting: the beach is incredible, but I love City Park, and the crowd at Voodoo was better. Not that the crowd at Hangout was bad necessarily, but it was a lot of college bros and what not. Voodoo just feels grungier and darker and nastier, in all the best ways.
For the record, I had a blast during Metallica's set. The music was not cheesy at all...in fact, I purchased the downloadable set from their website and caddy and I went halfsies on that and Pearl Jam's DeLuna set. Hetfield's banter in between songs and reminding us that they were Metarrica a dozen times and that 'they play heavy music' was cheesy. Lars' fat bald ass making funny faces and standing up while playing drums to emphasize that he's a wild and crazy guy or whatever was especially cheesy. That duder should have took his other path and became a professional tennis player like his parents.
That's because moar people on this site actually went to hangout and are just judging Voodoo by the lineup only. Yes, the Hangout undercards have been better than Voodoo. But Voodoo destroys Hangout once that sun goes down in NOLA.
