I made burgers for Thurston and Kim when I worked at Shake Shack. I demanded that I be allowed off grill to serve them, too. My manager spotted them in line, he had been a fan for 20 years or something, but nobody else in the damn shack knew who they were. I had seen them play United Palace Theater less than week before, so I told them I enjoyed the show and gave them a complimentary t-shirt. And then several hours later my heart rate returned to normal.
Jess, any Dead tour stories or pre-2000 Phish stories will likely be warmly received. Actually, my experience at Coventry is easily one of the craziest/worst things I've been apart of, but I'm on my phone and don't want to type it out now.
Certainly the most memorable Dead moment was at Deer Creek in 1995, when people broke the fence down and the cops started tear gassing people. The second night was cancelled so that was the last time I saw Jerry play. For the record I had a ticket but that last year of the Dead touring you really had to buy them from Deadhead magazine, because every night was selling out in minutes.
I worked the door at a club in Salt Lake City in the late 90s. Met a ton of my favorite bands there by offering to help them load in. Pavement, Mudhoney, Spoon, GVsB, GBV, Archers of Loaf. I ate corn with GWAR on their tour bus while they got into costume.

Here is another good one I went to the H.O.R.D.E. Festival in 1993 and 94, this was arranged and headlined by Blues Traveler, but the supporting cast was pretty impressive.

I was backstage at the Rolling Stones in Foxboro, maybe 2005ish? Had a friend on the crew, got to watch soundcheck from the FOH and then get a quick tour thru backstage and got to stand center stage in the Mick spot for about a minute. Its unbelievable how big that stadium is from that perspective. Only saw Charlie's back as he disappeared around a corner but that was good enough for me. Got to see Keith's and Ronnie's guitars and Keith's tech gave me a European tour pick. Really one of the most special moments of my concert going career.
My first true festival was Lollapalooza '92 at Great Woods. Yes, the Lollapalooza where the crowd burned down a huge portion of the venue. I was reeeeeally close to where the fire started, didn't participate but was just in awe of 1) how fast it happened and 2) that people were running thru and jumping over the bonfire which just got bigger and bigger and bigger. I was really young and it all seemed really dangerous, exciting and new. Funny part is, I saw Archie Bell at that show and I ended up backing him up as a fill-in Drell in 2005 or so. Archie is one of the most inspiring, kind people I've ever met.
I opened a small club show for Toots & the Maytals in 1998ish. The band were super nice to us and treated us like peers.
Dave Wakeling paused a English Beat show once just to take the time to make fun of my West Ham scarf in front of the whole crowd. Couldn't've been prouder!
A friend snuck us backstage at the Ponderosa Stomp in 2009. Met (or stammered out niceties to--I was starstruck!!) Ronnie Spector, Mary Weiss, Question Mark, Roky Erickson, Syl Johnson and a bunch of other greats all in like 5 minutes. My brain exploded. Meanwhile my mister was having beers with Roky like they'd known each other for years!
Best concert experience ever though was playing a show for a benefit IN MR ROGER'S NEIGHBORHOOD. And here's the photographic proof:
Yes, I had beers in front of King Friday's Castle.

After eoto in Chattanooga last year jason hann came to this shizzy club raw (only place with edm regularly here) and my buddies and I met him and had a few beers. Once they close the place he decides to come with us back to my buddies house to keep on partying. My buddy is a drummer and had his set up so jason jammed with us a little. Left around 7 am to go get back on his tour bus.
You must know people I know, because I've seen pictures and been jealous of this before. Either that, or Jason has a habit of going home with strangers.
OK. My story.
It was either Fall 2001 or Spring 2002. I can't remember. But I was at this disco party at Ohio State, and Snoop had a concert in Columbus that night. Afterwards, him and his crew are rolling by and see a bunch of white boys with afros running around, so naturally they stop. He didn't stick around for long, but it was long enough for someone to hand him a beer, and for me to have a claim to fame that I have partied with Snoop.
I was there for the Alabama - Notre Dame game...so boo-yah!
Also there for HORDE during the Lenny Kravitz year, as well as when the Grateful Dead was alive and well and touring in 95 right before Jerry died. I was there when Galactic was playing at my frat house before they hit it big. And I was there for Pearl Jam and then Kanye

Didn't you used to always talk about how you didn't really get into Phish until the late 90s? I could have sworn that one of the shocks of the century was that I was seeing Phish before you.

No I stopped seeing Phish in the late 90's after my kids were born, or I at least stopped seeing them as much. Before that I was doing 30 or so a year.

Not as crazy but I had a dude thrown on me by a security guard at primus in 2011. Spilled his beer all over me and when we looked back at him he was just layin there confused as hell.

Being back in New York this weekend reminded me of this story:
I was in town for CMJ in 2008. My label was doing an official showcase that year (with True Panther Sounds actually) so we all had official credentials and everything and it was awesome. I have a friend from high school who did some booking for the Highline and Sharon Jones was playing there early on Friday so I went over to have some beers with him to start my night.
So I get there before doors, and it's totally mobbed. Turns out the Highline was having a party sponsored by Perez Hilton that night and had given away a whole shizt load of tickets or it was free something. Anyway, turns out Sharon Jones was opening for Lady Gaga. Her first album had just come out and she hadnt gotten much national traction yet. Nobody at the party had any clue who she was, I mean every single person I talked to was just there cause it was a Perez Hilton thing.
So I stayed and watched her show, which I thought was only ok, then I went and saw Jay frittat at the Bowery.
At Echo Project I watched a wookette giving birth during the GZA set. I was just peaking on some corn. People were trying to get medical help, but they hadn't arrived. Some other wookette claimed to be a midwife and was coaching the woman through this. Her wook man is standing there shirtless and spun like top, just making these weird sounds while he is crushing his beer can and spraying coors light all over everyone. He looked really anxious about the whole thing, grabbing his face and just making grunts and stuff. The baby's head starts to crown and the medics still haven't arrived.
This is where it gets crazy... It was so quacking dusty out there and the baby and all the surrounding fluids were immediately "muddified" by the blowing dirt. I mean, its quacking gross. All of a sudden, this quacking kid (probably 19 or 20) in his oversized neon, flat-brim LRG hat, runs up yelling "welcome to the party biznatch!" before he blows a huge plume of smoke right in the baby's face! While the umbilical cord is still attached and shiz!
The smell was unmistakeable, this baby had just been deemcorn'd.
He must have pulled the hit from a corncob, b/c it was monstrous. The surrounding crowd dropped their jaws, and someone tackled the kid as he starts to run away. He didn't make it more than 10ft and the he was probably blasting off about now.
The mom is clutching the dirty baby and trying to calm it. Though, strangely, the baby was not crying (tripping balls i guess?). And while the dude is getting screamed at, the dad suddenly pounces into action. He jumps on the dude, and starts smashing said bisco kid's face with the crushed up beer can, of which he seemingly just can't let go. The bisco kid is kicking and trying to roll out of it and the wook-dad grabs the kid's hair w/ one hand. he finally let the can go and shoves his other hand half way inside the guys mouth. He is pulling his mouth open and RIPS HIS CHEEK OPEN! repeat: rips his quacking CHEEK OPEN!
there is blood everywhere and the dude lets out this braveheart-like scream as he gets pulled off by the folks around him. Blood all over bisco kid's face, shirt and formerly fresh flat breezy. The cops/medics arrived about that time and took over the situation.
I met Wesley Willis as well. I saw him in a little black box venue with about 100 capacity. He died four months later.
Description of the show sounded about the same as in OP with some addition. The show started at the early hour of 6pm. Wesley stopped the show about halfway through. Said he had to go to the bathroom. Called his manager/assistant on the mic; he had to come onstage & physically assist Wesley off his seat & down to the facilities. Never ever seen a set interrupted for a bathroom break aside from that.
Met him at his booth after the show. Would have loved to receive one of his famous headbutts, but with as frail as he looked and that protuberance on his forehead (which I remember being even larger than the previous picture posted) I just felt as if it would be too much to ask of him. Had a handshake and brief chat, but didn't get an autograph.
It was the only night I ever attended two shows in two different venues, thanks to Wesley's early start. Went to the Bright Eyes show after that and it was a hell of a contrast.
Last one for now, and it's a bit of a stretch... but since it was the night that Foo Fighters (& whoever else I missed while doing interviews - James Taylor? Bon Jovi?) played at the Democratic Convention I'm going with it.
It was the last night, when rain kept 50k people from seeing Obama speak at the larger Panthers stadium, so it was crazy getting in. Finally made it past the ground-level checkpoints (getting the stinkeye from Fox News host Brit Hume along the way) and was going through the arena's atrium. I see Tony Shalhoub, best known for his title role in Monk, about five feet away. He's originally from Wisconsin and was a speaker at one our bigger rallies when this state started going downhill a couple years ago. I call out "Mr. Shalhoub!" He sees my cheesehead bearing the state motto Forward and says "Ah, you're from Wisconsin." We get on the escalator and talk on the way up. I thank him for speaking at that rally back home. He says it's too bad how it turned out and I pointed out a few bright spots on home state politics...
In the middle of this ride, the fat guy in front of us I hadn't really noticed turns to look at me. It's Wayne Knight. I'm already in one unique situation and running on 8-10 hours combined sleep the preceding four nights. All I can think of to say at this point is, of course... "Hello, Newman." He doesn't like it. Sneers and turns away again.
It was totally not the right thing to say there, but it was quite excellent.
